Yeah, he hit it hard. Sadly, the recipe for a double play usually includes two good ingredients: someone else had to be on base (a good thing) and someone had to hit the ball hard (a good thing).

I think with how the lineup is going to roll over, you'll get the lefties in the 7th and then you'll be mostly RHP in the 8th and 9th. Like you'll see Sheets and Croenenworth soon, but then it'll be back to the Tatis-RHH top.

We probably did a little. But I think the narrative of "oh no it's the Cubs offense again!" that this thread had been hard on is just not an accurate description of what's going on. He's generating those whiffs largely due to his own pitching. I don't think we were helping him nearly to the degree people here think. I'd say it's 70/30 in favor of Nick.

He was doing this. Stats wise, it has merit. A little less against a RHP, but it remains statistical viable for someone like Pete.

I don't think that's what this says. Another way; this is a pivotal moment. The Padres have their best hitters up and the Cubs offense hasn't gotten going. You cannot afford a run here. Mentally and on the scoreboard. So bring in a guy you think will shut this horsefeathers down regardless of whatever designation he has. The Cubs still have Kitttredge and Keller from the right side.

To be fair, especially to Shaw, the likely reason he chased the fastball is because he got stuck with a strike-2 call that was *not* a strike (per Statcast). Good pitching; Pivetta went fastball outside the zone further than the bad called strike and generated a whiff. On one hand, yes, Shaw should not swing at that. But that's also good pitching and a little bit of favorable umping on the call. It's not as cut and dry as one thing or another.

Exactly. He probably froze initially just to ensure it was a ground ball. That ball was hit 101mph off the bat and did go 65 feet, so it wasn't too far from Swanson when it actually got down. Last thing he was going to do was get doubled off with zero outs. He would have scored if it was more clearly a groundball because he'd have gone on pure contact. With 0 outs you're much more cautious.
