  1. MLB.com may see him as the 63rd best prospect but I think based on this trade, you can assume the Cubs do not see him as the 63rd best prospect in baseball. Teams can have wildly different views of player than industry rankings. And that's how you square this trade. I think it's a very heavy price, myself, but I don't think the Cubs agree with me there.
  2. To be honest with you, I don't know why they haven't given him a look, either. The under the hood look at Triple-A isn't incredibly ugly. But I also wonder if they just...don't know what to do with him. Bendix is a former Rays guy and the Rays were always "velo-velo-velo" and Garrett is very much...not that.
  3. Again. I think the Cubs just told you today he's not a catcher. Not to them. Not anymore. A DH who can hit like Mo isn't very rare.
  4. There's some Justin Steele in his game. I don't mean to say he's going to be Steele, but in his pitch shapes and what not, you can find similarities. I think he's a fun project.
  5. I don't think they made the trade based on 16 IP. But I do think today the Cubs told you Mo isn't a catcher. And if he's a DH, he's a DH who doesn't hit LHP well. The line on Mo was always "is he a catcher or a DH?" Behind the plate he's a great young player. As a DH it's a hard one to find a ton of value. So I think the value here matches.
  6. At this point I don't care one way or the other. They're not getting much of anything back for Rea, so the depth might matter more than the lottery ticket. If they do move him? Fine by me, too.
  7. My guess too. I had four names: 2 SP, 1 BP and 1 bat as my guess and they got all of those things. I suspect we are mostly done. IF they do anything else, I think it's small stuff where they shuffle a few prospects who they have to protect in the winter but aren't planning on it.
  8. I'll be the first to tell you Rojas for Holmes/Taylor is steep, and I probably wouldn't have done it, but the Cubs didn't treat Rojas like a top-50 prospect in the same deadline they clung to Owen Ayers. Internally they did what you'd hope; they picked their guy and they traded who wasn't. Stand on business. The Cubs haven't gotten fleeced under Hoyer. They didn't get fleeced when they traded Christopher Morel. They didn't get fleeced when they traded Cam Smith (so far). They didn't get fleeced with Ferris and Hope for Busch. Maybe this is the time they get fleeced; it happens. But based on history, the team has known when to sell on a guy, and when not to. And at worst, when they've traded a prospect who was good, they got good back.
  9. I think that depends on how you view Taylor. He's crushed lefties this year, over his career its 101 wRC+. I haven't dug into the why, but Shaw is also crushing lefties this year and did so last year. Either one, on paper, would be fine to play against LHP.
  10. It wouldn't factor into the trade value, but Clay Holmes was reportedly cool with an extension in NY. He feels very "Cub" like.
  11. With how hard the Cubs refused to trade Ayers, but were okay sending Rojas here, it's probably telling you internally how they feel. Even so, this feels very heavy on a return.
  12. Yeah Rojas is a monster return for those two.
  13. I get it. In the moment, it's really hard. My initial comedown from Detmers to Zeferjahn was "whelmed". But I think if we take a step back, the Cubs are probably doing well this deadline: - They added a reliable SP for the playoffs. They gave up practically nothing - They got a back end reliever with velo and whiff. They gave up a player who, by the way they acted today, they believe to be a DH - They got a somewhat interesting project pitcher for spare parts If they can add Clay Holmes or another SP in the next hour, it'll be a good deadline for 2026. For 2027, the did BP shopping and may have replaced Rea/Assad types. They are still locked and loaded for a trade in the winter, but this time, they didn't sacrifice the 2026 team to do so like they did last year. Would it be really cool to get George Kirby now? Hell yeah! But I also think this is a solid deadline and everything remains in play for 2027 while remaining a team who looks like they can make noise in 2026. So it's probably not sexy, but it would be effective.
  14. I'm not sure it's a possibility with the wrist sprain right now.
  15. If there's a takeway over all of the Detmers/Ayers thing, I think coming to terms on how the Cubs feel about Ayers and how other teams are viewing him is important. I said a week or so ago I'd have traded him for Weaver and FG has him as a 40+ FV guy. That was clearly wrong. I think a little re-calibration is probably in order. I think putting him in the same tier as Rojas/Hartshorn feels like that's how teams are treating him. Cubs included. It makes the lack of a trade a bummer. But maybe I'm also equally as excited about how the Cubs are treating him.
  16. Arjun Nimaala is a 50 FV on fangraphs and ranked 44 on their big board. He's ranked #36 on BA. JJ Cooper talked about how awesome his EVs and batted ball data are. So...yes.
  17. So I think the word "pivot" here is not really great in how it's making it seem. They didn't pivot from Detmers to Garrett. They pivoted from Detmers and Garrett is just a little part of that. Something happened to the Detmers deal and I dont know what it is or why. But the Cubs have long liked Garrett and I've heard he's a Zombro project who the team doesn't plan on really throwing in 2026. So I think there is more coming, it just might be a rental.
  18. Just some behind the scenes talk: teams and the Cubs seem to be treating him as a ~top-50 talent.
  19. Since June 23rd: 46 K% 6.3 BB%, 2.22 FIP If they get this guy, he's a killer.
  20. You can read the tea leafs. The Cubs have refused to move Ayers and even when they might have, they were in on young backstops to fill that.
  21. Ballesteros. They wanted a top-50 prospect from an NL-East team FWIW.
  22. 4 walks in his last 16 innings 1 in his last 10 Something may have clicked.
