  1. Aw nuts, I'm going to be busy with studying and school stuff for the rest of the day. :( Nate (or anyone in attendance/listening to the game), if you could please post a report on Carrillo in terms of his stuff, build, and so on, I'd be quite thankful! :D
  2. He's managed to overcome the hamstring and groin problems, but his incredibly violent delivery and small stature make me wonder how much longer his body will be able to hold up. I do have to wonder if there are any clauses in there involving tractors, though.
  3. The article was surprisingly well-written...until it hit a wall. I can understand the Restovich sentiments, but the Mabry and Walker comments are head-scratching, to put it mildly...especially considering he just wrote an entire article based on win shares and VORP.

  5. http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4150448.html 5 years, $73m. Yeowsa.
  6. Cubs trade candidates: Mark Prior, Jerome Williams, Rich Hill, Will Ohman, and Michael Barrett (zuh?) Glendon Rusch is also listed as a top FA in the 2007/2008 offseason. Hee hee hee.
  7. The thing is, though, I'm more apt to blame Ramirez, Cedeno, Bynum, and the ump (Wendelstedt?) than Demps in this situation. He got the double play ball when he needed it and that fourth ball was a strike on the walkoff. Yet, no one argued. Go figure.
  8. This team has been through worse and done less. I don't expect anything to happen this season.
  9. Normally I'd be pissed off about that call. No argument from Dusty or Hank. A walkoff walk. But considering how horrifically bad this team is, that came as absolutely no surprise.
  10. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAQHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
  11. I see the Pirates are intent on making the Cubs look smart by comparison.
  12. Any other team would have had a man on second. But noooooooooooooooooooooooo.
  13. If anyone (beyond my mention) brings up the Model Penal Code (again), I'm never opening this thread again.
  14. LEAVE ME ALONE! I'M IN DENIAL!!!!      ;)
  15. I'll admit it, I really hoped Snider would be there when the Cubs picked. I really liked his bat and his great character, although I worried that his defensive issues would cause him to end up as a 1B/DH type rather than a 1B/LF type. There are a few things to keep in mind. First off, the Appalachian League is comparable to the AZL more than it is to the NWL. Snider is doing this at rookie level while Colvin is doing this at Short Season A. It's a minor difference, but Colvin is facing better pitching and better defenses than Snider. On a related note, because Snider is down at such a low level and still developing, his flaws might not be so readily noteworthy. We've seen plenty of guys tear apart lower-level leagues, then collapse in on themselves when they hit High A, AA, or AAA. Colvin has at least proven himself at a higher level than Snider. Finally, Snider's BABIP is noticeably out of whack (.382). Given that his OPS is 1.248, I'd have to think his numbers will begin to decline at some point. Snider's ceiling as a hitter is higher than Colvin's, especially given his combination of power and patience. Yet, the problem is, we simply don't have the same access to these guys as Hendry, Wilken, Riccardi, etc. If I could lay out all of the scouting information, medical histories, and so on, believe me, I would. Yet, with maybe a few exceptions (who understandably won't due to job security), I don't think anyone on this board can adequately do all of that. It could be that Snider could become David Ortiz v2.0...or it could be that he balloons to 300 pounds and ends up out of baseball in two years. Colvin could become the next Jim Rice...or the next Adam Greenberg. I have faith in Wilken on this one. I can only hope he proves me right.
  16. The comedy potential would be off the charts. ...and he'd still be a better manager than Dusty.
  17. But this gets back to UK's point...how will we know Pie will be better than Colvin both offensively and defensively? We all know Pie's ceiling is really good and justifiably merits him being considered one of the Top 25 prospects in all of baseball, but any number of things could happen to him. Let's look at the best case scenario. Even though it may not happen, assume for the sake of the argument that Pie wins the CF job out of spring training in 2007. Over the next two seasons, Pie goes on to play at a high level and lives up to his expectations. Come 2009, Jacque Jones' contract is up and Colvin is ready to be called up to the majors, showing himself to be a bit above average in CF and shows that he could be an ideal middle of the order hitter who can post good OBPs with 20-25 HRs. Pie moves to RF and Colvin gets CF, while the Cubs don't have much in the way of salary tied up in the OF while getting good production from CF and RF. The odds of that happening are miniscule, but it's nice to dream. However, there's always the chance that Pie pulls a CPatt while Colvin goes on to put up Murton-like numbers in High A & AA (only with less patience and better power). If Colvin can put up a comparable OPS to Murton, only from CF with better D, wouldn't that make this pick worthwhile? I'm not predicting Colvin will be an All Star or even make the majors. However, I think this board has largely been jumping the gun with ripping on him and the Cubs for making that pick. The Northwest League is not a place with greatly lesser talent than what Colvin faced in college. Plenty of top college draft picks have started at a comparable or lower level than Colvin. A number of us have also been horribly wrong on a number of occasions when it comes to projecting these things. I'm happy to admit to being among those people. What's going to matter the most for him is next season. He'll probably start in Peoria but be fast-tracked if he performs well enough. We'll find out, one way or another.
  18. Heck, make Chris Speier the interim coach and let the minor league coaches come up and see what they can do. At worst, you offer them their old jobs in the offseason.
  19. Who? There's obviously a huge drop-off after #4. Eric Patterson, Tyler Colvin (yes, I am high on him), Scott Moore, and then possibly JK Ryu, Mitch Atkins and Jake Fox, depending on how the rest of the season pans out and what scouting reports/first-hand accounts come out about each (if Fox will stick at C, Atkins could still add some velocity, Ryu gets called up and has a few good starts). Also, it depends on how you define the whole prospect thing. If some one like Guzman or Marmol would qualify, I would definitely put him above Mateo.
  20. Mateo? Really? I can think of a couple of guys I'd put over him without much trouble...
  21. That's always a good sign. Still, we'll see how he develops and if he can stick at CF.
