    The hiccup that could come up from that is whether the Cubs want to keep his innings down in the early going to keep from shutting him down in August/September. In that case, they can stash him at Iowa until someone gets injured or sucks out loud. I could see him forcing the issue in Spring Training, but we saw him run out of gas last season and he needs to build up his stamina for the long haul.

    The NFL should just implement shootout rules for OT. Each team nominates five players, who each get one free uncontested 40 yard FG attempt off a tee. If, after each team's five attempts, the teams are tied. It goes to rock paper scissors, baby!

    Tomlin reportedly interested in trading for Fields As much as I'd love to see them trade #20 for Justin, I'd be happy with #51 and a conditional 2025 pick depending on games played and performance.

    It really comes down to how you feel about who is likely to decline versus who is likely to improve from last season, and also whether you think Counsell will be a meaningful upgrade from Ross. For comparison's sake, here's last season's opening day roster (keeping in mind Seiya started the season on the IL). Assuming Bellinger signs, the Cubs are looking at likely upgrades at 1B (which was a catastrophe from Opening Day onward) and the bullpen compared to 2023. You can also make arguments for improvements at 3B and the rotation in 2024, although you can also make arguments for regression for either (or both). The only major downgrade this team might have compared to last season's opening day roster would be CF if Bellinger doesn't sign, and even then, plenty of people are predicting PCA having an NLROY season and there's still the possibility Jed signs one of the other Boras FAs. It's all a matter of perspective, but I can talk myself into predicting 90 wins for this team if I'm willing to be optimistic. I can't say the same for myself for this time last year, when I thought 81 wins was a massive stretch for 2023.

    Kendall Gill was spouting off about exactly this a few days ago on The Score. I nearly drove off the road hearing someone make those claims.

    PR? The story would be "Caleb comes home" instead of "superstar QB throws tantrum". It's a weak reason, I'll admit it, but it's something.

    Hypothetical time (because this is basically all we'll have until draft day). Caleb Williams privately approaches the Bears and says he's going to pull an Eli Manning if they draft him, and he can't be talked out of it, but he'll keep quiet about it so the Bears won't lose leverage. It then becomes abundantly clear that Washington desperately wants him and they're willing to overpay. What's the minimum draft package from Washington that would make you happy in in this scenario? 2 and 36? 2, 36, and 40? Something more?

    The Bears are not a real estate investment consortium. They aren't in the business of buying, developing, and flipping property. They bought a massive parcel of land with substantial carrying costs and already paid the demo costs. They bought a massive piece of real estate without securing any deals whatsoever in terms of real estate tax relief and development. And now, everyone on the planet knows they're desperate to sell. It's a debacle.

    I'm sure the Friends of the Park would be thrilled at this prospect after the Lucas Film Museum fiasco. Then again, most of those people were just douche canoes who didn't want to give up their parking spots for Bears game days. The fact that the Arlington purchase hasn't been painted as an abject debacle by more people in the media still amazes me. They spent over $100m with zero due diligence and are basically stuck with a vacant lot and no meaningful exit strategy.

    Purdy validates the meatballs, and it seriously annoys me about him, even though it's not his fault. Dozens of QBs each season end up drafted in late rounds or go undrafted, and yet, to hear certain people tell the tale (be it online, in print, or on the radio), it should be super easy finding the next Tom Brady or Brock Purdy among those QBs! In reality, the vast majority of those guys are lucky to end up on a practice squad going into opening day the year they're drafted. I also will gleefully abuse my banning authority if anyone seriously compares Tyson Bagent with Purdy around here. Not a joke, just a fact.

    That draft should be held up as an example of why recovery from TJS is not an automatic. Injuries ravaged that class, not the least of which was Luke Hagerty's (apparently) botched TJS.

    It's kind of funny, I had similar reactions to the Cubs drafting Horton and Shaw. I wanted the Cubs to take a big swing, and was initially disappointed and annoyed. But, People Who Know Stuff came out of the woodwork shortly after the pick and said those guys were actually really good picks, so I felt better. Then, the Cubs took huge swings with their next picks, and I couldn't really complain about either. Here's hoping they get a similar outcome with Wiggins as they did with Ferris.

    Put differently, it's easy to see teams like KC, Baltimore, Buffalo, and GB back in the playoffs next year because of their QB situations. I don't see Fields ever being that QB for the Bears.

    I think it's especially important since it seems like the OC is effectively going to be a co-head coach in charge of the offense. I would imagine the role of OC on the Bears is a much more intensive job than, say, OC on the Chiefs or the Packers, and having someone with experience in the role would substantially flatten the learning curve.

    Williams is likely already a millionaire thanks to NIL. Of course he'd come off as aloof and "not a team player" to some dumbass meatball.

    Wicks' value to me (and I think Tom touched on this) is that he seems like the sort of bedrock pitcher who can have a long career and give you quality innings as a SP while under a rookie deal. He probably won't be an ace (although the same was said about Steele and Hendricks), but a lot of his value seems to come from between the ears rather than from his arm, if that makes sense. This team needs to fill out the rotation, and having a guy like him who can immediately slot into the 4/5 role is more valuable in 2024 than what Ferris would have given them in 2024.

    Apparently the recent Amazon deal with Diamond didn't specifically include the Guardians. My inclination is the Guardians will probably be in a holding pattern until this local broadcast situation gets completely ironed out. Bally Sports was apparently considering dropping the Guardians from local broadcast rights even before the bankruptcy, but I have to wonder if Amazon is trying to nose their way into streaming rights for MLB teams. That would change the Guardians' financial outlook significantly.

    Trying to come up with an ideal partner for Fields is a bit rough. You need a team that buys into his upside and sees him as an immediate starter. It also *should* be a team that's pretty much ready to compete and just needs a decent QB to come in and lead the offense. That takes out teams with established QBs and teams that are in full-on rebuild mode. There are maybe a handful of teams fitting the bill. Out of those, Pittsburgh probably doesn't have the stomach for another Bears retread and I don't see the Bears and Vikings doing a trade for fear of it backfiring either way. Who's left? Maybe someone in the AFC or NFC South?

    The Giants tend to do their share of weird stuff that somehow works out against all reason. It seems like a facially bad move, but if it somehow works out for them, I won't be surprised in the slightest.
