Regardless, he's getting results. I've been mulling over the pitching prospects in this system recently (given how dreadful most of them have been) and I keep coming back to Jensen as one of the few bright spots in this system. I'm not quite at the point of putting him in my overall Top 10 for this system, but a few positive scouting reports would change that in a hurry. -

I just realized the abbreviated signing deadline should mean we see Almora in pro ball for a decent stretch this season. That put a smile on my face.

Watching his videos, it's easy to imagine him as a power relief pitcher who moves quickly through the minors. Between the arm troubles and a wicked slider, he seems to profile as a potential setup man/closer. Then again, if he can start and maintain his stuff, then the Cubs should give him every opportunity to start. That slider is dreamy.

Johnson is the most likely bet for under slot, but as an injury guy, who knows? He could opt to go back for his senior season (or transfer), make it through the season, and up his stock enough to be a potential Top 20ish guy. Blackburn has a strong college commitment; I'll be surprised if he signs for slot.

Good enough; we didn't knock our draft out of the park, but none of the picks were head-scratchers or awful. There's intriguing upside with the pitchers taken in the supplemental 1st, plus Almora was a really solid pick at 6.

So, assuming he signs, where's everyone slotting Almora? I'd put him behind Rizzo and somewhere in the mix with Baez and Jackson for the 2-4 slots.

Not a bad pick. Should be an overslot, given his commitment, but there's definite upside.

Nope. But we're having a hell of a day out of Brett and Vitters. McNutt and Jensen pitched well, Torreyes broke out, Baez had a couple of hits, so did Lake. Good day all around. Works for me. Some day I'll get around to updating all of those box scores!

Much as I love having a new job, it's kind of sad that this is the first weekday Cubs game I've seen this season. This team isn't very good, is it?

i'm more concerned with baker's lack of brains on that play That ball was going to need a hop or three to get to the catcher. Theriot was going to be safe by a good amount. I'm fine with Baker's decision. there was no decision. you don't lose anything by not cutting that off. maybe theriot falls on his face and has to crawl home. you don't cut it off, it's like folding when you're the big blind and nobody raises you. He keeps the runner from first from advancing into scoring position. Yeah, maybe Theriot falls down, but maybe the catcher also whiffs on fielding the ball and allows the runner to go to third. Things happen. Baker was mitigating the damage.
