  1. If Shaw actually does something positive here, I'll allow myself some hope for this series.
  2. I have zero faith in anyone behind Happ driving in a run in this situation.
  3. Hypothetically, the Cubs should pound Priester into the ground based on matchups and metrics. So, I'll predict he throws 7 shutout innings.
  4. We're approximately two pages away from a discussion regarding whether jet fuel melts steel beams. It's admittedly a refreshing break from some of the nonsense we've seen in game threads recently.
  5. The Dodgers are pretty much set at 3B/1B between Freeman and Muncy, so I don't think they'll be serious competitors for Murakami. The Yankees, on the other hand, are the current favorites, but assuming Bellinger opts out, they might end up pushing hard for Tucker instead.
  6. The major problem the Cubs are going to have this coming offseason is that every team which was in on (and lost) the Soto/Ohtani sweepstakes is going to make a run at Tucker. The Cubs *should* be able to make the best offer, but that's never a guarantee. What's really annoying is we're at the point in the year when these schmucks can make baseless claims about the Cubs' intentions with Tucker using non-existent anonymous sources, and then after Tucker signs they can crow about being right, pretend the Cubs changed their minds, and/or never mention those claims ever again, depending on what's convenient. My sense is the Cubs are going to make an early run at Tucker and, if those talks go nowhere, make a pivot to Cease/King and then do something like make a big offer to Murakami with Shaw being used as trade bait for a veteran corner OF.
  7. Neifi Perez should still be our starting SS based on that grand slam he hit in St. Louis!
  8. It's also worth pointing out that other teams' pitching preferences tend to be highly idiosyncratic, and the Cubs' minor league pitching depth fell off a cliff after Wiggins pre-deadline, even when factoring in the guys who got traded at the deadline (Gallagher and Armstrong). I'll grant that you can blame the front office's inability to develop quality pitching prospects for that, but it's also worth mentioning that the Guardians and Rangers both wanted pitching for Bieber/Kelly, and neither team might have valued Wiggins the way other organizations might have. It also speaks to how the third WC spot helped kill the market, since teams like the Marlins and Giants were able to convince themselves they were buyers, where they might have been sellers a few years ago.
  9. Winner, winner. A healthy Horton and/or Steele would have made today much more palatable, but injuries meant Counsell had to pick from a bunch of bad options. I'm grateful for the off day, though. Get 'em Monday.
  10. I'm pretty sure Schwarber's HR is somewhere out past Jupiter by now.
