I mean I guess they just need some kind of lackey to run the team while they give him lineups and bullpen options Pretty much. And while I suppose it can get even worse, it just feels like this team has checked out on Maddon. Which, of course, is sort of a meatball thing to say. But they are just not competitive in any aspect. They lack focus. They are getting handled by teams that aren't even good. It's not a great look for the manager. He’s also just not being smart. How many times do you have to see Monty get lit up by a lefty before you stop forcing him to pitch as a lefty specialist? I thought Maddon was supposed to be forward thinking not some crusty old dude who is obsessed with traditional matchups overriding any other managerial decision making

We were 5-20 going in to the break in 2016, I believe. Which is somehow worse than 2017 or even where we are so far this year. Your general point still stands but it was 5-15 right before the break. Yeah and at one point had a stretch where they went 1-9 and their pitching was getting lit up. Coincidentally it was during a stretch right before the ASB after the Cubs played like 24 days in a row. Right now our pitching is getting lit up right before the ASB after playing 50 games in 52 days

Liriano is just as bad or worse as those guys Seems like he’s having a good season statistically. He’s certainly pitching better than the crap the Cubs are throwing out there.

Its amazing our depth issues. Pirates have Liriano ready to go and we have to choose between Chatwood, Maples or Monty

It’s such an easy move to make to cut him. Every day he sucks it’s clear he’s unlikely to become a viable starter and no one is going to criticize you for cutting a domestic abuser if he signs elsewhere and puts it together.

And ridiculously high income tax rates doesn’t help Rrrrrrright, because no player wants to play in LA or NY either. I said it doesn't help, not that its something that shuts down any possibility of signing FAs.

Pirates have scored in every inning except the 3rd and multiple runs in every inning except the 3rd and 6th. In every inning the Cubs have scored, the Pirates have scored at least as many runs in their half of the inning

Reds will be at 4.5 back and Pirates 4 back. I know people think it's nuts but if the Cubs and Brewers look like they currently look, those two teams are not out of it. They definitely aren’t. I think the reds more than the Pirates. The Cubs might just keep on sucking the rest of the year but chances are this is pretty much rock bottom and they will play at least some degree better at some point soon. Have to remember they have played 50 games in 52 days. Maybe it’s excuse making but we’ve repeatedly seen this core of Cubs teams struggle towards the end of these stretches, even the 2016 team. They also seem to hit a wall before the all star break every season. I’m trying here
