I'm not exactly jacked up about suggesting Wesneski either. But I'd much rather have him start than Smyly for a variety of reasons. But seriously, ignoring how bad the options are, who are you starting the next turn in the rotation?

I agree there are issues with calling up Wicks out of the blue. No one was projecting him to start this season, hes not on the 40 man, he's only been at AAA for a spell. It's just an option. I would have gone with Wesneski personally.

You are comparing 10 ERA bad vs. Wesneski bad. Smyly couldnt get through 4 innings in like 6 of his last 9 starts and generally looked awful. It was a poor choice, but even if you want to say ''hes a veteran and he'll figure it out", Ross gave him an extreme amount of rope tonight. And you can't retroactively declare Wicks not prepared to start when they've known they needed a starter tonight for almost a week.

Yes there’s lots of reasons to poke holes at other options. But kind of loses steam when you are arguing for starting a pitcher with an ERA near 10 the last 2.5 months.

And yet he's also going to get a lot of praise (and rightfully so) for his offseason moves or really moves over the last 2 seasons to put the Cubs in this position.

6 days ago this dude gave up 9 baserunners and 4 runs in 2.2 IP. Today so far 1 baserunner and 0 runs in 2 IP. maybe he’s well rested from being pulled early last time out

…sure but there were other options out there. Perhaps guys like Wesneski or Wicks are not ideal to throw into a playoff race but either is a guy with an ERA over 10 the last 3 months

Assuming he pitches more than 1 inning, this will be the 7th multi-inning appearance in a row that Smyly gives up a HR in his first inning of work. Cubs down 1-0

Sunday's starter Jordan Lyles had a 7.22 ERA in his previous 5 starts, allowing opponents to have a .987 OPS against him in those starts. It looks like they must have made a scoring change because they were originally saying he allowed 2 ER in 8 innings but now its 4 ER. But either way, he allowed 6 base runners in 8 innings. Last nights starter Alex Faedo had a 6.08 ERA in his previous 5 starts and held the Cubs to 2 ER and 5 total base runners in 6 innings. Unlike Lyles though who was getting hit hard in all 5 of those starts, Faedo's starts were alternated between solid and terrible.

Yeah I agree. Even if the White Sox had 25% of the Chicago market they'd still have more available fans here than they would in the entire Nashville metro area. In reality, the number is probably closer to 40-45%.
