Pretty light night of baseball but there are a couple of interesting games to keep an eye on Marlins @ Nationals - 6:05pm. Marlins are technically still alive, the Cubs can increase their lead over them to 5.5 games with a Nats win. Nats continue to play solid baseball. Giants @ Padres - 8:40pm. Giants are currently in WC3, 2 games behind the Cubs, and 0.5 games ahead of Arizona. A Padres win would give the Cubs a 2.5 game cushion over WC3 (Giants/DBacks tie) Braves @ Dodgers - 9:10pm. No real affect on the Cubs but its possibly the 2 best teams in baseball squaring off. The Dodgers have been insanely hot (24-4 in last 28) and trail the Braves by 4 games for the 1st overall seed, so they would probably need to sweep to put the top seed in play for them. Braves are "only" 15-4 in their last 19 so not quite as hot as LA

And its valid even in this case its just that teams that are 6 games under .500 heading into September usually aren't within 5 games of the division lol.

DBacks didnt get anyone but put claims on 4 players, but all the Angels players were claimed meaning that I'm guessing the rest of the players went to the Red Sox. Edit: Marlins also didnt get anyone

5.5% playoff odds coming into today, but ok then. I don't blame them though, its just money and not only improves their chances but also prevents the twins from grabbing them

Why wouldn't a Mac Jones scenario not count? The Patriots went 7-9 the year before they drafted Mac Jones, the Panthers went 7-10 last year. Doesn't seem that crazy that getting a solid year out of Young over the crap they had at QB last year would result in 2 more wins, especially in a division where everyone pretty much sucks.

Anyone want to predict roster moves before Friday. It should be unusually active since we have Sept callups and a 27th man for the DH on Friday who I assume will be the starter of one of the games. Also .possible Cuas returns from bereavement list. Cubs 40 man is at 38 so they have 2 spots to play with. Guessing: 27th man - Shane Greene (added to 40 man) Call up 1 - Brad Boxberger (off 60 man IL to 40 man roster) Call up 2 - Mervis (or Young) Could the PCA rumors be true? If so, looking at booting someone like Rucker, Kay, Estrada or Young from the 40 man. This is all assuming no waiver claims....if so then everything could change. -

Just from reading the tea leaves from beat reporters it sure seems like the Marlins and Reds are both expecting to be getting a couple new players tomorrow. what time are waiver claims announced?

Reds beat the Giants, so the Cubs playoff cushion is now 2 games. It will be 2.5 games if the Dodgers beat Arizona tonight.

All fair points. If I better understood where the Cubs were in salary obligations for 2024 and how adding $16m for Hendricks would affect that I might have a different opinion. I do think the Cubs will go over the tax next year but not sure how much. If they don't pick up Hendricks' option they'll likely have to find another starter in FA. They may not have to shop in the $16mil a year market for that starter but if they did, they might end up with a better pitcher, or they may end up with Taillon part 2 for the next 4-5 years instead of a 1 year commitment from Hendricks. I do like the thought of Hendricks possibly working something out for a 2 year deal that will give him less AAV but allow him to stay in Chicago where he seems very comfortable. I'd consider Hendricks at 2/$24 or something like that

$16 million would make him the 30th highest paid pitcher in baseball this year. His fWAR in 64th in baseball (for pitchers) this year at 1.8. However prorated over 26 starts (starting pitchers who have made every start this season are around 28 starts), he would be at 2.6 wins which is.......30th in baseball. I'm sure there's a much more intelligent way to determine his value relative to what other pitchers are getting paid, but that's what I pulled up.

Speaking of Candelario - 2 for 25 slump with no walks during that stretch. Of course similar to Morel one of his hits was pretty big, but gotta get him going again
