  1. Kyle allows 3 baserunners and a run, Happ hits a 2 run HR. Cubs have the lead but I don’t trust Hendricks very much right now
  2. Maybe?
  3. Dammit. Who can take that start? We're going against Clevenger who is probably their best pitcher this season with Cease struggling a bit. Guessing Assad since he would be on normal rest
  4. Keeping an eye on the Marlins, they flat lined for a bit and are rocking a -36 RD and unsustainable one run games record but think they did a good job of improving their team at the deadline, Alcantara is starting to pitch closer to last year's form and Cueto is just now starting to pitch (not well so far but small sample size and 1 year removed from being good with CWS). After a long down stretch they are 5-1 in their last 6 against the Reds, Yankees and Astros. I don't expect them to run away with anything but I think they'll be in the mix until the end at this point and due to tiebreakers they are currently 2 games ahead of the Cubs essentially.
  5. It is kind of dumb but I don't mind it. For 28 of the 30 teams it really doesn't change anything at all. If you don't care about it, think of them as regular season games because they are. The Bulls aren't going to play extra games against the Celtics because of this, they're just going to have 2 of their allotted Celtics games be considered part of the tournament. If youre looking for a reason to assign extra meaning to games during the slog of the regular season, this will help a little bit. It's a bit gimmicky and remains to be seen if this will do anything at all for fans, but it's not really anything at all unless you advance to the championship and have to play an 83rd game on a neutral court. It could be kind of cool if the stakes were higher though, like the winner gets a guaranteed playoff spot or gets an extra lottery slot with 1% odds or something.
  6. Trying to copy European soccer I guess, except in European soccer the in season tournaments are separate from their domestic league seasons.
  7. 6 groups of 5, 3 in the east 3 in the west. Groups are decided by previous year's record, but pulled randomly (the top 3 teams in the east each in a own group, then the 4-6 teams in the easy randomly put into those groups and so on down the line). Everyone plays the 4 other teams in their group once. These count as both regular season games and in-season tournament games. The 6 group winners advance as well as 1 wild card from each conference. Then there are QF, SF and Finals to crown a champion. I believe every game except the championship is a regular season game. The teams that don't advance will have regular season games added to their schedule so that ultimately everyone plays the same number of games except the 2 finalists.
  8. What do you mean? Is this the first you heard about the in season tournament?
  9. I think I read somewhere that another minor (or family of a minor) is now suing him which if true ruins the 'she told me she was 18' BS (which doesn't fly anyways). Pretty disgusting. Edit: also cl smooth mentioned this a couple days ago but no one responded about it.
  10. Win one to secure the BP Cup! Edit: I mean of course win both, but they need 1 to win the meaningless trophy
  11. ESPN did an article with a couple of different ways to measure Ohtani's value for this offseason. Not sure how valid these measurements are but found it interesting. They also list the Cubs as one of 6 teams positioned to sign him: https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/38047971/shohei-ohtani-free-agency-calculator-2023
  12. So far so bad tonight. Marlins lead the Astros 2-1 in the 8th. Diamondbacks up early too edit: 4-1 now. Looks like the Cubs will be 1 GB tomorrow. Miami will be 6-1 in their last 7 after a long down stretch.
  13. Since the Cubs are off, this is what other teams we're competing against are doing tonight: Marlins (0.5 GA in WC3): Home vs. Astros (Garrett vs. Valdez) Reds (tied in standings): Idle Giants (2 GA in WC2): Home vs. Rays (Walker vs. Glasnow) Phillies (3.5 GA in WC1): Idle Diamondbacks (2 GB): Away vs Rockies (Kelly vs. Flexen) Brewers (3.5 GA in Central): Idle
  14. I'm sure they'll roll over for us too this week right?
  15. horsefeathers Peacock. I'm currently arguing with Comcast that I should be a Platinum rewards member and not a Gold rewards member due to my cable service at my old house because Platinum members get Peacock for free.
  16. I hear ya. I guess there's just not enough to talk about. He threw 3 passes, one of them was a bit off the mark. I think the discourse is stupid, we should be hyped up about Fields' playmakers breaking off 2 long TD runs, or how well the defense looked after the first drive, or nothing at all because its a completely meaningless preseason game. I think the fan base is excited and nervous about Fields knowing that if he's going to be the elite QB we all think/hope he can be, its going to happen this year or never. If you are on twitter enough you have seen thousands of potshots at Fields for being "just a running back" over the last 6+ months. Fans are itching to see Fields prove them wrong, so everything he does is going to be amplified until he does prove them wrong. Then when he does that, other team's fans will find some reason that Fields can't be a top 5 QB, and Bears fans will go nuts over that, and the process will continue until he's as successful as Patrick Mahomes.
  17. Reds win game 2, Giants also won their game So we lost ground on the Brewers, Giants, Marlins and Reds (0.5 game) We stayed even with the Phillies Not a great day to lose!
  18. That 4 wins in a row consisted of playing 2 teams that are on average 26 games under .500. They won the first one by 1 in the 10th inning, the second one by 1 in the 10th inning, the third one by 1 run before finally winning a game by a decent margin (4 runs) today. I don't think the Brewers are playing all that well right now. Of course, they way they are built (bad offense, good pitching) they will naturally play many more close games, and to their credit they won the games when they easily could have gone 2-2 or 1-3 in that stretch. As it stands, the gap between the Cubs and Brewers SOS has only widened over the last week or two. Based on pure record, the average remaining Brewers opponent is roughly 5 wins better than the average Cubs opponent (82-80 team vs. 77-85 team), and if you go by Fangraphs remaining SOS, the gap is even larger at 7 games (83-79 team vs. 76-86 team). I think that difference in schedule is enough to cover the 3.5 game gap and the division will come down to the 6 H2H games. This isn't really responding to anything specific in this argument, just general thoughts on Cubs vs. Brewers.
  19. Yes that's exactly whats happening here. You nailed it.
  20. So Brewers win Reds lose game 1 Phillies lose Giants are winning 1-0 Looking like 3.5 behind in Central, 0.5 behind Marlins in WC, either tied or 1 game ahead of the Reds and either 1.5 or 2.5 behind the Giants
  21. Guess Kilian still isn’t ready to pitch in the majors lol 2 HBP, 2 singles, 1 double, 3 runs allowed in his inning of work
  22. Seems like a bad thing that every single member of the rotation is on a poor run right now. Steele is still pitching decent with a 3.54 ERA since the start of July, but also gotten a bit fortunate with 8 (!) different unearned runs during that period, 5 of them coming off one error. His ERA is over 5 during that stretch with less generous scorers calls. You can't ignore those errors but the fact that he allowed 5 runs to score after the error doesn't help prove that he's pitching well lately. Stroman's ERA is over 9 over the past 7 weeks, but hopefully the time off gets him right Smyly (who is expected to return to the rotation 'soon' according to Ross) has an ERA close to 10 over the last 2 months Hendricks has an ERA of 5.59 over the last 6 weeks Taillon was pitching well but got lit up today and his season ERA is 5.71 And yet during this stretch the Cubs are playing their best stretch of winning baseball this season. Offense + bullpen + defense > bad starting pitching
  23. I do appreciate the Cubs offense going cold only on days when they're getting blown out.
