  1. Jed - "Ohtani? I don't know nothing about any Ohtani. What's an Ohtani?"
  2. Same, especially this late in the process. But hey if he is torn between 2 places with similar offers, you never know lol
  3. That's fine, I have to live with the Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks every day. I just wanted the Cubs to give me some hot stove dopamine hits lol
  4. Edit: This is pointless if Boob's quote is wrong, but whatever, I like the PTR and "wont bend on principles" version of Jed schtick Jed: Shohei, we are really interested in signing you and are prepared to make a competitive offer. I think you'll love playing at Wrigley Field. Ohtani: OK great, I've already gotten multiple offers for over $500m so maybe we start there and see wher- Jed: Let me cut to the chase. We're willing to give you 7 years, $300m with club opt-outs after years 2, 4 and 5 Ohtani: Umm, no that's not going to work Jed: What about we add free nights at Hotel Zachary for you and your friends? Not weekends or holidays though Ohtani: Jed, are you really serious about this? Jed: Have you seen our World Series trophy? And we just hired Counsell! Best manager in baseball. Ohtani: Look guys, it starts at 10/$500, are you going to make an offer in that range? Jed *looks at Tom who shakes his head*: No I think we're out Ohtani: *sigh* ok can you at least validate my parking pass? Jed *looks at Tom who shakes his head*: .....no
  5. Hey I'm sure there's another "one of the best and most unique players in baseball history" coming to FA again sometime soon.
  6. OK if that's the case, I withdraw my last post. If they weren't willing to go up to $500m when everyone was expecting the cost to be at least that, they were never serious suitors to begin with. Did they think that Ohtani would love playing with Seiya in Chicago so much that he'd take a discount or less years?
  7. What is the point of that? No Cubs fans are going to be like "hey i'm just happy they tried!". Maybe it helps with other big FAs to see the Cubs involved in these types of biddings, but not sure about that. My guess is that the Cubs were extremely serious about this but had their limits and would not exceed them. They went in expecting to be in the 10/$500m range everyone was talking about, but the bidding went beyond that and they decided they aren't comfortable going higher. Ohtani was clearly at least considering the Cubs, but if we never met with them when the Dodgers and Blue Jays did, we probably got filtered out because we wouldn't reach the level the bidding was at.
  8. I disagree. I think those moves would both be on the table even if we got Ohtani and we've had rumored interest in both for week. Though yeah my hopes aren't high, just not necessarily because of that.
  9. I mean yes, I am not completely shutting the door. Rogers explained that he is hearing from low level Cubs staffers, but won't report anything formally until he hears from higher level execs. Very possible the Cubs have an extremely small inner circle of FO people that are aware of whats going on. But I'm also not expecting it to happen, partially because I never truly thought we'd get him for various reasons, but also because most of the smoke seems to be elsewhere. Very unique FA pursuit though so who knows.
  10. This reminds me of that episode of Mad Men when they are trying to win the Honda motorcycle account, and the Japanese businessmen have some very strict rules that they consider dishonorable to violate. Instead of violating the rules, SCDP tricks the other agencies into breaking the rules and they win the account. The Cubs are clearly leaking to reporters other teams meetings with Ohtani or letting them eliminate themselves (like Roberts just did), and when they're asked, they are responding "Who's Ohtani? I don't know any Ohtani".
  11. Freddie Freeman was worth 8 wins last year and he's going to be the 3rd best position player on the Dodgers. Blah
  12. In to a varying extent!!
  13. Maybe. It’s possible the Cubs were in on him for 10/$500m but if the rumors of it exceeding that point are true they might have backed out. I think Shohei would have come here if we were clearly offering the most money. I don’t know that for a fact but my guess is this is a highest bidder situation before anything else.
  14. Cant remember if there was a dedicated thread for Rhys edit: Damn you are all snipers. I grab that twitter link when it still said "just now" in terms of when it was posted
  15. Chicago the city of blue balls
  16. I'm sorry, I refuse to believe @PlaymakerDavid duped us
  17. Well I don't think any of us actually felt deep down that the Cubs would get him. I had hope but never really expected it. Onto the next one... * I realize Boob is often wrong so this too could be wrong. If he's right those are my thoughts
  18. Fwiw Rosenthal is reporting that Ohtani was rumored to be in Florida today meeting with the Blue Jays so maybe that’s where they were, just probably not in LA. It’s interesting that Ohtani met at the Blue Jays spring training complex. Maybe he just happened to be in FL. I suspect he won’t visit every teams complex though
  19. Blue Jays met with Ohtani in FL today
  20. They are really taking that “Ohtani wants no leaks” thing seriously but seriously, if it is personal reasons it is possibly serious for the president of baseball operations to miss some/all of the winter meetings. Hope everything is ok
  21. Not even sure why I'm posting this as I think this more or less reading the tea leaves of things that have been said today, but he does say the buzz seems to be that the Cubs are fading. Who knows lol
  22. Carter “wet blanket” Hawkins
  23. Speaking of terrible reporting, PlaymakerDave is slowly lowering the Cubs odds of Ohtnai. Once at 90%, now at 60%
  24. Thats terrible reporting
  25. I do find it interesting that Angels manager Ron Washington said he doesnt want to say anything because he doesn't want to "let the cat out of the bag". But could just be trolling
