  1. Hawks clinched the Central when Detroit lost earlier, but they celebrated it with an emphatic victory over Calgary today. Niemi looked really really good in the third period as he had to stand on his head a couple of times. According to Foley, Niemi has allowed 2 goals in his last 9 periods. What a difference a week makes.

  3. I rather enjoy when the Blackhawks play Calgary.
  4. Having the game start at 3:05 is such a tease. I'd honestly rather the game be at 1:05 PM, where I know I'd have no shot of catching any of the game, than 3:05 where I'm going to be frantically be trying to get all my work done and then every single obstacle that even momentarily delays my trip home is going to annoy the crap out of me, all so that I can get home and watch the last 1-2 innings of the game. Blah, maybe I'll just fake being sick and leave at 3 :)
  5. i kinda agree with him on that, though. if it's one percent per OPS+ point - like the albert pujols example of being 44% better than the average player - then why not just have the average player be 0 and the OPS+ represent the actual percentage? seems like that's easier to understand than 188. Eh I don't know. Maybe it's because I learned it that way, but I feel like having 100 as a benchmark and rating them above or below 100 is a good way to make it understandable. Saying Albert Pujols is 44% better than the average player just doesn't really appeal to me for whatever reason. Maybe it's just me but it's more difficult for me to quantify that in my head than looking at 188 and comparing it to someone with 166 or 110 or whatever.
  6. I'm not sure I buy it. I'm sure he's had a great spring but once the season starts and pitchers aren't working on perfecting their stuff and are more concerned with getting outs and winning games, if Colvin keeps up his insane BABIP, pitchers will stop pitching to him. And when they do that, will Colvin actually take a walk, something he hasn't done all spring?
  7. I haven't spent a ton of time in Chicago, but from my memory those types of shirts aren't so widespread that you can find them in malls. That's the case in St. Louis. Good point. I haven't been to STL since I was a kid (and I'm a better man for it), so I have no frame of reference there. It's quite interesting over there. And yes they really really hate the Cubs. I was there in August 08 and I just so happened to pack a Cubs shirt and wore it one Saturday. Oh and it just so happened that the Cubs were playing the Cardinals but at Wrigley Field, and on that particular day the Cubs got blown out (but won the series anyways). I got approached by at least 7 St. Louis residents whose comments ranged from friendly banter, to assholes who told me I wasn't welcomed in St. Louis wearing that. Meanwhile, I see idiots walking around in Cardinals gear all the time in Lakeview and no one thinks twice. I mean part of it is that area of Chicago (and Chicago in general) being a transplant city, so its not unusual to see people in Chicago wearing Cardinals/Tigers/Brewers/Twins/Indians gear (probably the most common in that order).
  8. Eh, it was okay. I like how he tried to dumb down the stats to the common fan, but some little things were stupid, like talking about how OPS+ is confusing, and should be used as Player X is Y% better than the average hitter, instead of saying 124. But good for him to finally embrace advanced stats, despite by his own admission being wary of them in the past.
  9. A 3rd and a 4th. How did the Bears not jump on that? They probably wanted at least 1 draft pick this year. If you think about out, in that scenario we'd trade our first 4 picks in the draft for what amounts to Jay Cutler and Boldin. 2 solid players, but doesn't help us address a ton of needs. Also you have to consider that it wasn't Cutler for this years first, it was last years and this years first plus orton plus a 3rd or whatever it was. So 4 draft picks would get us 1/5th of the Cutler trade and Boldin (and a dead guy)
  10. Don't worry. According to Deadspin, no one has been murdered in Newark since February. It's close to a record. I'm not joking.
  11. We win and for another day stay alive.
  12. See its not all doom and gloom in Chicago sports! The Bulls won too.
  13. Seriously. That was an excellent game by him. The defense as a whole looked really good tonight, at least from the 3rd period on, which is when I started watching.
  14. Hawks win! Great 2 points tonight! I feel like that makes up for the Philly game that we blew.
  15. Wow Niemi great job of getting the leg out. One more save here for win
  16. CSN just said this game was the first game in the entire NHL since 2001 where no penalties were called all game.
  17. I've never seen both teams have so few offensive chances in a 4 on 4 OT. The Hawks in particular have gotten absolutely no chances in OT
  18. It would be so Hawks to give up a goal in the last 26 seconds.
  19. I have summer hours too, but they don't start until Memorial Day.
  20. This is the quote I read addressing that:
  21. Don't worry Fred, fake baseball will be over soon. The world of Soriano stealing bases and Silva pitching scoreless baseball will be a memory by next week.
  22. Since the demand for the Cubs here is no longer enough to get individual game threads, all comments from game threads from 3/28 until the last ST game on Saturday should be here. Cubs won 2-0 today on a 2 run home run from Soriano. Good to see that.
  23. I'm still rather annoyed about Brown getting released. Can someone please give me one reason why he needed to be cut for nothing in return?
  24. Side note but, who would have ever guessed 3 years ago that we'd be saying stuff like "according to _____'s FB page, (legitimate news) "
