The offense was so streaky that year, and it seemed to go dry the last week of the season. Other than that, I have no [expletive] clue. We were up 1.5 games with 9 games left, playing 2 against the hapless Mets, 4 against the hapless Reds, and 3 against the Braves who were resting for the playoffs. Against the Mets it was LaTroy Hawkins blowing it, then the offense not showing up that sunday. Against the Reds, the Cubs just stopped scoring and lost 3 of 4 despite great pitching performances. In one game Sosa came up with the bases loaded and missed a grand slam by inches, in another Prior struck out 16 guys and Hawkins blew the save. Also Austin Kearns. Also the Astros finished by winning 31 of their last 39 games and finished 3 games ahead of us.
