Yeah, after two first round "risks" the last two years, he might've felt like he needed to play it safer this year. With one of those (and the most recent) having worked out very well, not sure why that would be his reasoning. I don't think he went safe in direct response to 2012/2013, but rather now that it is his third draft he takes full ownership of 2014 results and he needed a guy he was reasonably assured could produce from day 1. It's possible he believes the Bears are in a position to contend, and knows the defense needs help so he took someone who is solid and can contribute in year 1.
