seems like a strange move for him Doesn't seem that strange to me. He hasn't coached anywhere in 6 years, and the last time he was a relevant coach was probably 16 years ago when he coached the Jail Blazers. In his career he has made it to the NBA Finals once, 25 years ago as the Lakers head coach. I'm not saying he's a terrible coach, just a middling one and one that has been out of the spotlight for the better part of a decade. No one is giving him an NBA or power conference job, he probably has too much of an ego after 17 seasons as a head coach to take an assistant job (and if he was open to it he would have taken one in the period between getting fired by the Clippers and now). If he wants to get back into coaching, becoming a head coach at a lightly regarded low-major school seems like the most appealing option. Actually seems almost like Larry Brown taking the SMU job, except Larry Brown is a more accomplished coach and one with significant college experience with Kansas in the 80's.
