And oh Haugh is taking them to task. And Mike Greenberg is chiming in too. Now (actual post): Chapman's domestic incident is getting a lot of play in the Chicago media -- more than I suspected. Yes, there is a double standard of media coverage between Cubs and Sox, but never underestimate the capacity of the media to generate a narrative-constructing feeding frenzy on an emotionally charged topic.

    Technically he was #4 going into the season (and a top 100 prospect in baseball), but yeah has fallen off quite a bit That was 2015, after the 2014 season. Mckinney was 7th on BA's Top 10 going into this season and fell out of the Top 100 after 2015. Sickels had him as high as 3rd in January.     I know right? So what if he was so angry he went into his garage and fired his shotgun 8 times to scare the [expletive] out of her, there are no marks on her! I'm not defending what he did, I just find it unfair to label him the way he's been labeled based on what we know. People are making it seem like he nearly killed someone. What he did was wrong and bat [expletive] crazy, no doubt about it. Too much alcohol can make good people do bad things. I just don't know if that makes him a 100% evil person, but I don't know enough. I'll take a self-imposed break from the board, I hope you all will find it in your hearts to give me a second chance. Sorry I cannot dismiss firing a shotgun off to intimidate something you're fighting with as something drunk people just do sometimes. I completely believe in second chances, but I also completely believe that if you do something so dumb and so violent it is a cross you should have to bear for a good while. It doesn't get erased from your record after 8 months because you apologized a couple of times.

    That might have been a Cubs condition, but Chapman had no incentive to agree to it. He never asked to be traded and from what I've read liked playing with the Yankees even if they weren't going to the postseason. Even if he was looking to finish the season with a contender, he could have said no to the condition because he didn't want to bring more attention to the situation or was put off that he was asked to do something highly unusual. His incentive was to show he was willing to play nice with teams still unsure about how to deal with guys in this situation. It's going to be that much easier for his next team to justify signing him when they can point to formal apologies (especially when people somehow eat them up as going beyond what was required of him). valid point

    It depends, Happ is more polished, closer to the majors and plays a premium position. But I think Eloy's ceiling is much higher.

    I guess I appreciate the Cubs being proactive and addressing the elephant in the room right away. It won't really appease anyone who hates the fact that the Cubs traded for this man, but at least they aren't just trying to ignore that part of the story.

    I said this earlier but I think Chapman should be the defacto closer but used situationally in high leverage situations against LHB as needed. In those situations Rondon switches to closer. This isn't just because I'm against the trade, but is this strategy something that's way easier to pull off in theory vs reality? Obviously you want Chapman pitching the most important at bat of every game, but those moments sometimes tend to develop pretty quickly. Maddon is the best in the game and I'm happy it's him trying to figure out the best way to use him, but you can't just have him throwing on the side for the last 4 innings of every close game. No you can't, but the concept of a LOOGY is hardly a new idea. Not that we would use him as a LOOGY, it would more likely be a few batters. I dunno, maybe that's the wrong way to look at it, but I really want a guy that can come in to shut down lefties. Particularly if we play someone like the Nats, whose 2 best hitters are left handed.

    I'd be very shocked if they only ever use in him the 9th inning/save situations. Especially in the playoffs I said this earlier but I think Chapman should be the defacto closer but used situationally in high leverage situations against LHB as needed. Technically he could be used in all high leverage situations, but the Cubs have multiple guys that kill righties so i think its ok to save Chapman for the final 3 outs in those situations but would be willing to do either. I just think Chapman wants to close and if we want to resign him this might be a good compromise: OPS against (very basic stat I know) vs. RHB Edwards: .352 (VSSS) Rondon: .379 Strop: .445

    I mean is it really that unbelievable that even tho they didn't extend him now, they have an understanding and are in the ballpark on a contract once the offseason gets here? No its perfectly possible, just not as likely as him having a bad source or no source at all. An hour ago he was saying the Cubs WILL NOT (yes he used Caps) do the deal without an extension and that they were actively negotiating. Now after mainstream reporters come out saying that there was not really any discussions about an extension, he all the sudden says 'yeah but like the cubs totally feel confident he will resign' even though he's a Boras client and will probably be positioning him to get in a bidding war and end up with the largest contract for a relief pitcher ever.
