  1. TBH, I'd rather have Uehara or Zielger than Holland. Uehara still strikes out a ton of guys. Ziegler has a GB rate of 60-70% and we'd have the best defensive infield in the majors on the field for his appearances. I don't really want to deal with the 1st year post TJ surgery struggles from Holland. I guess we could have both, but I'm assuming we do end up getting a starter that pushes Montgomery to the pen.
  2. Why in the world would a team like the Padres do that. It's not like they have too many rotation options.
  3. I just don't believe the reports we're not going hard after Jansen. We have like two roster spots left, either two bullpen arms, or a starter and a reliever, because of Montgomery's versatility. And even if we do acquire a starter, it won't cost much money (most likely). I get we don't have to spend money and we already have the best team, and maybe Theo had to beg PTR for some extra cash last year, but the back end of the bullpen is the one spot on this team that borders being a weakness. Like you would think the playoff money will go somewhere.
  4. If not for that bone spur I'd be all over Foltynewicz. Buuut, that'd just be asking for trouble now I think.
  5. I don't love those K/BB/contact numbers from last year and his CF defense is pretty 'meh'. But he's not terrible I guess and is decent insurance in case Javy and/or Almora totally flop. If one of them takes a step forward, hopefully we won't need to give Jay a lot of ABs.
  6. Does Colome have much of an injury history? Like I wonder if they'd trade for him to close in 2017 with the idea of having him take one of Jake/Lackey's rotation spot in 2018 and beyond.
  7. There isn't an obvious match with the Dbacks since they have zero need for Soler, Almora, or Candelario. Might need to get creative with a 3 teamer or something. Unless the Dbacks really like someone like Rondon.
  8. Trade: Soler and C Villanueva to the Rays for Chih Wei Hu (starts at Iowa) and Enny Romero. Sign: Jansen 5 yrs, G Blanco 1 yr, K Uehara 1 yr (dominates lefties with that splitter, so he essentially replaces Montgomery) Starters C Contreras 1B Rizzo 2B Javy (rotating in and out of the lineup with Almora and Blanco) SS Russell 3B Bryant LF Schwarber CF Heyward (and a lot of RF) RF Zobrist (and a lot of 2B) Lester Hendricks Arrieta Lackey Montgomery bench MIggy, La Stella, Szczur, Almora, Blanco bullpen Jansen, Rondon, Strop, Edwards, Grimm, Uehara, Romero
  9. I think it was Olney who wrote after the world series that Bryant could become this generation's Derek Jeter. His peak is/will be better than Jeter but the point is he might be the face of MLB right now since the overall best player plays on a shitty team and after everyone's bedtime. Plus, if we compare actual faces, KB wins in a landslide over Trout's tinyface.
  10. You think they're giving up on AJ Reed already? Or he'll share time with Gurriel if he starts to hit, IDK. I do know Hinch is in love with Bregman at 3B, or at least that's what the ESPN telecast said when we played them late in the year.
  11. Why wouldn't Guerriell play 1B with Bregman at 3rd? Pretty sure that's what they're doing, no? McCann and Gattis can split between C and DH.
  12. I was thinking of what we'd have to add (probably a lot) to Baez + Soler to get Archer and Daniel Robertson from the Rays. Because Kaplan was saying today he's hearing Dex and the Cubs want to reunite and someone will have to be traded. Then I checked Archer's fangraphs page...I get it's a great pitch, but my elbow started to hurt looking at the slider usage. I mean, come on.
  13. I could see the Nats having interest in Almora if they want to move Turner back to the infield. If I were them, I'd be all about moving Murphy to 1b and Turner to 2b. Zimmerman is baaad.
  14. That's the thing. I don't know a lot about football and am only watching because I'm the epitome of a fair weather Hawkeye fan, but I feel like this game isn't even that big for Michigan; if they go on to beat Ohio St and Wisconsin, they're almost definitely in. Especially when you factor in what #2 and #4 have done tonight.
  15. lol, they really gave a first baseman the platinum glove? It's even funnier considering there are like 3 or 4 players on Rizzo's own team who are better defensively at their positions than he is at his.
  16. I'm intrigued by davell's idea of trading for Sonny Gray. There are some big red flags, including health, and that's a good package, but it's a group of players I'd be willing to sacrifice to bet on Gray. He's got three more years of control and the 2016 A's infield defense was an abomination. Gray's a big time ground ball pitcher, so I'd be very interested to put the best infield defense in baseball behind him and see if he can't put up some more ace-like ERAs.
  17. I think Chapman and Jansen are, and will be, worth every penny they get. WAR doesn't do these guys justice, as they pitch exclusively in high leverage situations, and the normal volatility of relievers doesn't apply to these guys; they'll just continue to be awesome. And I think we got a pretty good glimpse at how important elite bullpen arms are in the playoffs. I don't particularly care which one, but I need one of them to be a Cub.
  18. A smaller move that needs to happen is re-signing Coghlan. Teams won't be lining up for him, yet all he's done as a Cub is hit.
  19. One of my favorite parts about all of this is that the 2017 season is basically right around the corner. Like this is gonna be a short offseason.
  20. For the love of god get a David to call balls and strikes
  21. Since the Cubs prefer to have Contreras matched with Chapman, I'm thinking he'll be the first one out of the pen as long as Hendricks goes at least 5 innings. Then if we need another pitcher, I'm guessing it'll be Lester and Ross for the save.
  22. I hope Joe West catches some flack for his actions during and after Strop's last batter.
  23. So I bet Ross will start tomorrow. Partially because of the way Willson has looked and because Lester might be the main setup guy. Keeps Ross with Lester and Contreras with Chapman like they prefer.
