  1. Archer hasn't moved. And if you want help in the bullpen I'm not sure how going for your lesser arms is supposed to help. Archer wasn't close to Cashner (or even Jackson)'s level when the move was made.
  2. I think it's West Virginia or Illinois for Shaw
  3. Why was there a rush to get big league value out of him? He wasn't close to being out of options. If he falls apart after his "limited success" in the rotation, then you can move him to the pen. Wouldn't it make sense to not move one of your lesser starting prospects to the pen rather than your best?
  4. Zeller may go to IU (I'm not sure why), but I'm certain Dan Dakich doesn't know where he's going.
  5. He was a relief pitcher for only one year as an amateur, which was his junior year at TCU. Prior to that, he was a starter in junior college and in high school. And he wasn't all that great a pitcher until he became a reliever. And then again when he became a starter again. I don't see the point in putting much weight in Cashner's #s from 4 years ago in college when we have his recent success as a starter to go off of. Success in limited innings. So you agree they should've got him more innings as a starter

Do you think there's much similiarity between the pitcher he was as a starter in JUCO and the guy he is today?
  7. And he had limited experience as a starter because he had limited success as a starter. The assumption people seem to be making is that he was a lock to turn into a 220 inning ace. I just don't see the point in assuming that. Yes, I'd prefer he be a 220 inning ace over a reliever. But odds are that wasn't happening. I'd prefer they have let him stay on as starter, but it's perfectly reasonable to have him be a major league reliever. Who's making that assumption? Odds are he doesn't become a lock-down reliever either, so why bother making that move?
  8. If that happens, it won't happen for long. The Players union will be pissed and already enough crap to figure out before next season starts. Shouldn't the players union be more concerned with their players living a normal life past 50 than fines against individual players?
  9. Cashner had limited success as a starter because he had limited experience as a starter. He improved every step of the way the further he was stretched out. Once the Cubs got him a step away from the majors and throwing 6 innings/start they cut off his development and threw him in the pen because they were panicking about the big league bullpen.
  10. He was the best option in the organization, there was a decent chance that was what he was going to end up being eventually anyway, it got his arbitration clock started earlier and the team needed pitching help in the majors. It was not the ideal usage for the guy, but he hasn't been ruined or had his career destroyed. Archer and Jay Jackson were probably better options than a lot of guys that appeared in the pen this year, would you be ok with them being there?
  11. That sure worked out well last year. Cashner's already in there due to necessity, and his career is probably ruined because of it. Can't wait to see Jay Jackson and Chris Archer warming up in the 6th and 7th next year. I'd hardly say a career is ruined by going to the bullpen. Maybe he will never be a 220 inning $20m ace, but there odds weren't all that great of it happening in the first place. You can have a great career in the bullpen, whether you stay there forever or move out of it eventually. Are the odds that much greater of him turning into a 70 inning 10M reliever that it's worth abandoning his starting for no reason? I don't know. But there is a reason so that's a moot point. What was the reason for putting him in the bullpen this year?

  13. But thanks to the freaking basketball announcer for letting us know Bartman's place in history will stand a couple innings later. Well I was talking about the HR that people had a page long freak out about in this thread.
  14. hahaha i read about this today. I guess they wanted the Thunder, well, wanted KD, and he said he'd only do it if thabo and nenad could be on the cover, since they're the 2 starters that never get any pub. frankly, if i was SI, i would have been like uhhh, thanks but no thanks. It's really hard to not like Durant.
  15. That wasn't interference on the Yankee fan, the ump got the call right. If the fielder has to go reach out of the field of play for a ball, it's not interference.
  16. And it's not just the drooling buffoons. There was moderate support for "Sandberg was screwed" on BTF.
  17. Doug Melvin's going on at least 4. Just looked it up, he's actually only hiring his 3rd this offseason. He was hiring in October 2002, he hired Yost for 2003, then Yost was famously fired in September 2008 and replaced by Dale Sveum. But he was only an interim manager, and to me that doesn't count because it doesn't go against his GM track record. Then after that season he fired Ken Macha for the last 2 years and now will be hiring his 3rd. But Hendry beat him to the punch. I looked up Dombrowski, Jocketty, Colletti, Sabean and none of them have made 3 managerial hires at their current (or St. Louis for Jocketty) position. I was including Jerry Narron from his Texas days. Wasn't sure if he hired Oates.

  19. Anyone listening?
  20. I'd expect more out of Bade than any first year big man. The guys Purdue brought in aren't the 5 star type, and thus probably won't have much impact as freshmen. I don't even expect much more than 12 minutes of being a capable backup out of Leonard.
  21. I thought UCLA had been better than that recently – same with Illinois. Illinois has been to 2 bowls this decade, it's rather sad
  22. The last time Illinois lost less than 3 games in a season was 2001. Has Clemson ever lost less than 3 games? I think it's been since '93 for ND.

  24. I'm sure Duchie is all too willing to whore herself out for this.
