  1. That was you? Seriously Mojo, I didn't have any change.
  2. I cannot believe there are multiple people in this thread that think the Nationals can finish ahead of the Phillies. People have gone overboard with the prospect love.
  3. How insane can you really get in one year? There are the high-end talents, and then what?
  4. Isn't Rodrigo Lopez just Chris Volstad's non-union Mexican equivalent?
  5. i don't really know why; it'd make you feel better if we unintentionally had a lousy season? you can't break an omelette without breaking some eggs, any good cook will tell you that THIS IS WAR PEACOCK
  6. I don't sense that people have their feelings hurt so much that they're absolutely dead set that their viewpoint is right, and every other viewpoint is wrong. asdryh aWEL;GSDKAgjl;sdga;laksdghL;KSDGHl;kdgkdghlkashdg;lkHSDL;KGHASD8YHsdopgthS0G8HSAD -0G
  7. I was using bWAR because fangraphs tends to slow up my work computer, but bWAR certainly tells a different story, with a 1.5 WAR difference between the 2 leading into last year (even using your timeframe which, obviously, is ridiculously favorable to Pena with a 4.5 advantage in 2007, which really has little predictive value at this point) I want to spend money on a real 1B since we have none, and the other options suck out loud. I don't see Jackson settling for 3/36. I don't see the point in signing Kuroda for 2/25 when we're not going to try for the first year. We're actively trying to lose this season and I'm [expletive] pissed about it.
  8. Overbay was around replacement level last year, I suppose that's his new level of ability? Of course we go by the standard rule veteran has bad year, DOOOOOOOM, guy under 27, breakout potential. Is this the part where you create a thin strawman so you can argue with yourself for a page? Lyle Overbay is 35, was below replacement level last year and most of it was hitting. He doesn't hit for power and doesn't field the position adequately anymore. He's not even a short-term option. He's a worse option than Jeff Baker. So Overbay fell off a cliff last year at the age of 34. Luckily Carlos Pena will only be 34 next year.
  9. Overbay was around replacement level last year, I suppose that's his new level of ability? Of course we go by the standard rule: veteran has bad year, DOOOOOOOM; guy under 27(or 3 bad years), breakout potential.
  10. [expletive], the Nationals are not going to finish ahead of the [expletive] Phillies.
  11. Let's have the argument about only spending on the best of the best for every sport.
  12. Where the [expletive] do you keep getting this 9M buyout from?
  13. 1.) That's not true. There are mid tier options like Carlos Pena out there. 2.) Even if it were, the whole point of this thread is to illustrate that FA isn't the only way to build a club. Did you ever notice the insane number of available 1B on the trade market? Logan Morrison Kendrys Morales Anthony Rizzo Justin Smoak Ike Davis Kyle Blanks Gaby Sanchez Those are just a sampling of some guys that could fill the void at 1B. There's also plenty of options out there like Carlos Lee and Adam LaRoche who can be had for nothing, hold down the fort for a year or two and provide average production. Or if you want to get a little risky you can always go with a reclamation project with upside like Chris Davis. There's about 50 options that fall somewhere in between Fielder, Votto, and Lyle Overbay. Let's not resort to absurdities. 1. How is Carlos Pena not a Lyle Overbay type? 2. So giving up our precious few prospects for a young 1B with good potential. OR Sign some veteran stopgap who isn't very good OR Fill yet another position with a reclamation project. Where do you plan on spending actual money?
  14. Why? Because they're mediocre players? Trade a mediocre player whose value ends after 2012 for a slightly better overall asset that's 2012 value is lower but has value beyond that. Turn those players into assets that help in 2013. Again, not rocket science, but giving up players of no value beyond this year can help beyond this year. Who do you think you're going to get in return for Marlon Byrd? A Robinson Lopez clone? The only way Dempster gets anything worth caring about is if you keep him til the deadline and he proves last year was an aberration.
  15. He decommitted basically on signing day after repeatedly telling everyone that he was staying, preventing Illinois from having a chance to replace his decommit. Thus the irony in being upset about someone telling him he was staying and then turning around and trading him. And then he went and said Illinois fans were sending him death threats, and when pressed on the threats, told the reporter that they were death threats in the manner that they wanted him to fail at basketball.
  16. The competition for Fielder features nothing but teams unlikely to make the playoffs in 2012.
  17. Or by offering him the best contract. You think Prince has eliminated Seattle and the Cubs from consideration because they're going to be bad next year?
  18. He can make as many marginal upgrade trades as he damn well pleases, I don't give a crap about that. I want a freaking free agent or three to actually have an impact on their chances in 2012. It costs nothing but money and does nothing to damage their ability to contend in 2014 and beyond. That just isnt't true, and I know that you know it. I don't blame you for wanting to win now (that is, 2012). I'm on the other side of that fence - I can hold off a year of it means we are building something sustainable. I'm giving Thoyer a year or two to show me that their way is the right way. How does it cost more than money? He's not talking about signing somebody that will wind up blocking a top prospect. He's also not talking about how we need to win now. He's saying "hey, maybe we should try and add really good players now, that way we'll have them for 2013 beyond too!" Reclamation projects and pre-arb guys aren't the only ones under control for more than a year.
  19. If you had it would you promise to spend some of it? If so I've got a purchase I'd like to talk to you about.
