But why waste money on a 2 WAR guy for 1 year? We already know we're not going to win anything this 1 year. Every win gained this year is worse draft position and less IFA money
-
I don't think they have any desire to give up 1M+ in draft pool.
-
I'd like to see the TT sell job on oh well we missed on Tanaka, BUT we are getting Scott Baker again
-
My answer to that question is yes, it would have been wise to try and do more to make the 2014 roster better. So who do you sign and why? Ellsbury and one of a host of starting pitchers who aren't Scott Baker or some other such rehab/flier [expletive]. Because they're good players.
-
Well, if those guys progress, we'll need good baseball players to help us win more games. And if they don't, we'll need good baseball players to help us win more games. You can see how waiting is crucial given that dichotomy. Nah, if they don't progress then we should probably hold off on making the same spending spree mistake we did last offseason.

Texas A&M is liable to have a MAJOR fall next year. How do they make up that 5,000 yards or whatever JFF compiled this year? Also, their defense is a complete trainwreck. Either 4-star sophomore QB Kenny Hill or 5-star freshman QB Kyle Allen should be able to help replace a good chunk of the lost yardage with Manziel gone. I also imagine we will run the ball a lot more next year. I think we will have three 5-star RB's on the roster. The defense definitely needs to take a big step forward. I imagine we'll end up around 8-4 again next year. But it's not just anybody they're losing, we're talking about losing a #1 overall draft pick here

Doesn't NSBB have some sort of Cubs press pass? Lets send a rep with a list of questions and rebuttals during the convention for Ricketts. Anyone here have journalism experience? (Other than Bruce Miles) Send SSR I'm tanned rested and ready

Olbermann touched on it when he was first elected, more under the narrative of Marvin Miller being denied again, but it was still a decent piece. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=10125463 ETA and if you want a hackpiece on it, here's Reilly http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10116177/rick-reilly-torre-la-russa-cox

It's McGwire More alarming are people who voted for Bonds and not Clemens or vice versa
-
and someone voted for armando benitez AND JT SNOW ETA: Excuse me, 2 people voted for JT Snow.
-
2 votes shy And Palmiero falls off the ballot.
-
I mean I guess that helps us, but it's not like it's not a positive for everyone else's budget. -
We have Biggio Bonds Clemens Maddux Thomas McGriff and a bunch of 1st tmers below 5%

Don't really see why that's "meatballish" (God I hate that [expletive] term, it's gotten to the point of "hipster" around here). Either you think he deserves to be in or you don't. It's meatballish because it's an ignorant way to explain away why someone forgot he was that good. Like I said a couple posts up, Lee Smith was voted into the HOF recently, and I'd take at least 20 people from this ballot over him, as much as I liked him as a player. Lee Smith wasn't voted in, and is unlikely to make it shy of the vets committee. He still has way more support than he should given the alternatives

You keep bringing this up, but don't balance it out with the pitiful scrap heap performances from others. If you add Lillibridge's 1-24 and Clevenger's 1-9 to Donnie Murphy and Cody Ransom, our scrap heap 3B don't look nearly as lucky. If you balance Borbon + Sappelt + Hairston + Gillespie with McDonald and Bogusevic, our scrap heap OF don't look nearly so lucky. On average, we got pretty much average bench performance from those combinations. Scrap heap guys are supposed to be terrible
-
How are you differentiating between "acting like they regretted last year's spending spree" and "have been in limbo waiting to offer most of their available money to Tanaka?" Well we're not getting Tanaka for one?
-
lol "spending spree"

Play someone at third that can hit decently and play Valbuena at second. Done. And who is that? The bar for offense at 3B is lower than people think. If we could find even a Vitters-level bat that would play there as long as they were an average fielder. It's lower because teams can't go to their 3b tree and grab a decent bat. No matter what the bar is we don't have one in house

the cubs current tv deal gives them 600k a game? A friend at WGN radio told me the TRIB lost $85K profit for each Cubs game not broadcast during the strike in the 90's. Seemed like a cash cow to me. And that was before DVrs maxes sports tv so valuable

Aaron Jordan verballed to Illinois today over Indiana and Wisconsin (among others)

This is (one of the many things) what's so infuriating about Weber. His teams will lay absolute stinkburgers against garbage teams, and then go out and beat OSU

OMG THAT TIE
