If you plan on competing in 2015, I think it's worth a lot. A competitive 2015 Cubs team relies heavily on guys who haven't played in the majors. We don't need to add more guys with that risk. I also don't trust Maeda(So he'll probably outperform Tanaka), nor do I think we save much cash going for him over Lester. (Unless the 20M posting fee is somehow counted outside of PTR) -
But he's just sitting in the corner reading Highlights.

But there are a bunch of names on that list that could pretty easily be Scott Baker or Chris Volstad. They've convinced me they can actually compete in 2015, and for a team with such little certainty on the roster, there's quite a lot of worth in signing a pitcher with a floor above replacement level.

I don't disagree that the FO won't pursue them, but what's the "good reason" to not pursue Lester or Scherzer?

I'd hang on to him and make a run at 2015, but that would also involve bringing up Bryant soon, and forfeiting a pick if necessary and those won't be happening.

i think we've already had enough years of this I personally wouldn't be mad if we finished 18th instead of 28th, but you can bet this front office will sign Skip Schumaker and Jason Marquis to avoid giving up a draft pick in that scenario. ETA: So I guess I would be mad?
