  1. I think Lou saves Steve from himself and pulls him after some mediocre work in the 5th. Offense is gonna need 5 or 6 to win. It's doable.
  2. I'm sure none of you ever read the notes on Cubs.com, but there were actually a couple interesting things in the ones posted before last night's game. Sorry if this was addressed elsewhere. The rotation is mapped out as follows 9/13: Trachsel(3 days) 9/14: Zambrano(5 days) 9/15: Lilly 9/15: Marshall 9/16: Marquis 9/17: Hill 9/18: Zambrano(3 days) 9/19: Lilly(3 days) 9/21: Marquis 9/22: Hill 9/23: Zambrano 9/25: (Lilly) 9/26: (Marquis) 9/27: ??? 9/28: (Hill)/Lilly/Zambrano 9/29: Hill/Lilly/(Zambrano) 9/30: Hill/(Lilly)/Zambrano Lou said it'd be Hill, Lilly and Z those last 3 games assuming they mean something, I ()d the pitcher who makes the most sense. Same thing with the 25th and 26th. What's the assumption here? He going back to Trachsel/Marshall on the 27th or should I not take Lou's comments at face and assume he throws Hill the 27th, the 28th, then Lilly and Marquis on short rest to end the year? Also Lou had a fun quote talking about the approach of hitters Anyone else see that as a shot at Hendry?
  3. the '98 giants beg to differ. The '98 Giants weren't a bad baseball team.
  4. Back on my shaky limb. Cubs 86-76 Brew 83-79 Cards 78-84
  5. If you ask any teams' announcers, players, coaches, gms, or owners, the problem with the team is that they aren't hitting in the clutch. Any team. More specifically for the Reds Adam Dunn isn't hitting in the clutch.
  6. He wouldn't be held back money wise in Houston, but he certainly wouldn't have total control, they should be out of the running as well. I'm not sure of the Astro infrastructure so if that is the case, it may not be the place for him. McClane's a meddler.
  7. This has by far been the best thing Piniella has brought to the table. He's even been quoted as saying sometimes you have to save the game in the early going(After he brought in Marmol in like the 5th or 6th inning. He knows Marmol is his best reliever and he brings him in accordingly.
  8. He wouldn't be held back money wise in Houston, but he certainly wouldn't have total control, they should be out of the running as well.
  9. 54% is pretty bad. That means the closer is giving up a run in every other inning they pitch more or less. I would think a great closer would be around 90% and an average one around 65%. Logically it makes sense, but I'm basing it on vaguely remembering a study where it was somewhere in the 50s. I may have imagined it. 90% seems way too high. Even figuring that they're giving up a couple runs every so often in that blown save you've got a miniscule ERA out of that. This is assuming that the runs allowed are normally distributed between different types of saves which may be a dubious assumption. Dempster's at 71% 1 run save% for his Cubs career for those who didn't do the math.
  10. Demp is 7 for 9 in 1 run saves this year(1 of them pitching 1.2 IPs coming in the bases loaded!) 8 for 15 in '06 12 for 14 in '05. I'd guarantee that 77% and 85% is above average for 1 run save %. Even 54% can't be that far below average I'm guessing.
  11. regardless, dempster puts far too many runners on base to be an effective closer with 1 run leads. Can Fred provide us with the numbers that show how many inherited 1-run leads Dempster has saved or lost? In order for it to be relevant, you'd have to know how many saves and blown saves the average closer has in those situations. Average % is going to be a lot lower. I'll check what Dempster's done.
  12. Hasn't Cameron's defense been in decline?
  13. real closers don't let balls hit the base. Real closers don't have ERAs around 4 and 15 losses in less than two years. Robb Nen had 7 losses in what may have been his best year as a closer. It's crazy to use losses as an evaluator of a closer, especially when said closer was pitching for a horrible team that is more likely to not bail him out should he blow a save. Dempster has saved 83 out of 97 save oppurtunities as closer of the Cubs. Nobody claims he's an elite closer, but he's perfectly acceptable.
  14. I guess Ive been away from NSBB for awile, but has there really been that much Dempster bashing here lately? It's mostly game threads where every time he(or any other reliever not named Marmol) comes into the game there's 10 people lining up to say how they're going to blow it. Though people have seemed to soften on Howry lately. On the rare occassion that Dempster does blow a save, there will instantly be a thread in rants created/bumped along with one in baseball discussions and one in transactions talking about what closers we can acquire instead.
  15. I can't believe all the talk of this being a lucky win, and us not deserving it. I've come to expect the Dempster bashing, but seriously lucky?? The ball bounced off freakin first base!!
  16. You mean Dempster went opposing pitcher on the Stros. GREAT JOB by Dempster after giving up one actual hit.
  17. Ryan Dempster tells the haters to step off.
  18. You know what'd help stop the steal? Geo.
  19. Hey, we found the guy blaming Dempster for the ball bouncing off the base! you're completely wrong. he pitched 2 innings last night, he needs a night off. He threw 17 pitches, about what he'd throw in a normal 1 inning save.
  20. Hey, we found the guy blaming Dempster for the ball bouncing off the base!
  21. For those not watching it was a slow bouncer to first that hits the base caroming into RF. Just ridiculous.
