I get so tired of people calling everyone that criticizes Lou or Hendry arrogant. Yeah I have trouble figuring out what being critical of hapless Cubs management has to do with arrogance. Because it seems petty when the Cubs have a .600 winning percentage, 2nd best in baseball. It's arrogant to think Joe Fan can build and lead the Cubs to better than a .600 winning percentage. People always state that the bottom line win record is what you use to judge a team's management. If you're inclined to dis Hendry as a GM, all you have to do is list Hendry's overall win/loss record as a GM as the thesis to emphasize the point, then throw out individual moves to support your case. But now that the team is winning, with a strong likelihood to maintain that success given the way its built, somehow the record is no longer the bottom line or central factor, and that is the disconnect. If this team gets to WS, that is how the management will be judged. Pie and Cedeno are young. They aren't going anywhere soon and their careers are not in jeopardy. As long as the team continues to win, the petty and overblown complaints will remain petty and overblown; particularly since Lou has proven to be a manager that will play anyone that delivers for him. The role players with the playing time right now likely play themselves back into role players, at which time Lou probably gives a kid a shot again. Reed Johnson's been playing his way into a role player for the past month. Lou's solution to put him back in that role was to get an old corpse to take his spot. Just because we're winning doesn't mean we can't be critical. Would Brewers fans have been wrong to call Yost functionally [expletive] while the Brewers were out to a 24-10 start last year? Yost didn't become a terrible terrible manager starting at game 35 last year, he was the whole way, the team was just playing very well. Maybe if Yost hadn't been an idiot for the first 34 games the Brew coulda won a few more games and they'd have made the playoffs last year. You should be worrying about maximizing your team's potential year round, not just when it starts to lose some games.

It works for everyone, you can't just take a guys road splits and count them as his true value. It is more extreme(ly bad to use) for extreme ballparks.

The teams didn't pass on Edmonds, they passed on him at his current salary. THe OP is saying that Hendry is thinking that SURELY a lot of other teams are interested in him at a reduced rate, so Hendry will outbid himself. Any money paid to Edmonds is deducted from his salary as a Padre. Jim Edmonds will make 8M this season no matter if he plays in Chicago, Tampa, Gary, or he goes home and sits on his ass. There is no reason for any team to voluntarily pay more money to get Edmonds because it's only going to benefit the Padres, not Edmonds. There's also no reason for the Cubs to have any interest in Edmonds. But Edmonds would be a free agent and Jim has big against himself for more than his fair share of mediocre veteran free agents. What is the point? Why does Edmonds want more money from his new team when he's still going to be making 8M no matter what? Why would he go to the highest bidder, when the money being bid is going right into the pockets of the team that cut him?

Everyone keeps saying worst case scenario, Edmonds sucks for a few weeks, Pie comes back up. That won't happen. If Edmonds sucks, A. he'll get a far longer leash than Pie, after all he's old or something. B. If they ever have the nuts to DFA Edmonds, they'll go get some other stop-gap to take his place. Felix Pie won't start more than 15 games the rest of the season. If they don't dump him in some stupid trade for a starter who's worse than Rich Hill, then they can have him on the roster next year, and they can say, well hey Felix has had almost 300 PAs in the majors and hasn't shown he can hit yet, he's gonna have to earn his position on this club. The unwashed masses will claim this is his 3rd year in the bigs, if he can't hit now, you might as well cut him, he's just another Corey Patterson(to be fair they are both black CFs) Felix will either make the team as the 25th man behind some mediocrity like Coco Crisp or Jefferey Hammonds or be sent down to AAA until they can find an adequate middle reliever to trade him for. (I can't decide exactly how they'll botch him next year yet.)

I'm a huge Maddux fan, but trading for him is just an awful idea.
