  1. I was coming here to post that this was probably the case. Hurdle has paid attention to the player voting very, very closely when replacing people in the starting lineup/roster. That's the same reason that was given for Holliday being given the starting nod, for example. I don't even think this was really a choice. I was just listening to XM Home Plate and whoever the host was said that if a player cannot participate in the AS game due to an injury (Wood), the next highest vote getter at that position MUST be selected (Marmol). The host said that it wasn't a widely known rule, but was part of the arrangement in 2002 in order to get the PA to agree to the WS home field advantage. Now it could be possible that this guy could has this whole thing screwed up, but he acted as if he knew what he was talking about and it didn't sound like speculation to me. If that was the case Soriano wouldn't have been replaced by David Wright.
  2. Yeah cause crazy old man Lou will admonish them for having the audacity to question him.
  3. Member, when everyone got all high and mighty saying people were whining too much about Carlos being used constantly. This happened.
  4. It's dangerous to talk about such things, and pretty difficult since we have no clue what kind of payroll cap we're looking at in the future, but would Dempster be a smart investment? Next year we've already got Z, Harden, Lilly as deadset locks for the rotation. Then to go with them(as of now) we have Marquis, Marshall, Hill, and Gaudin as possible starters. Then you've got some filler in AAA that could be emergency guys (Atkins, Hart, Wells?) It doesn't seem a great use of resources to spend 10M+ on a another starter. Granted, heading into next season we don't have a lot of holes to fill, we'll have Dempster, Edmonds, Wood, Howry, and Eyre, Johnson, Blanco, and Ward as the only free agents. But we also have some serious raises upcoming for just about everyone.
  5. How would you know? I documented it the other day that Wuertz and Lieber hadn't pitched with a lead in over a month.
  6. So it's pretty much a guarantee Marmol or Howry pitches the 9th since we're only up 5.
  7. With Hill looming, I'd shop him around and take the best offer. We can get league-average production for a lot less than ~7 million per year. And most teams can't. I think Marquis may have some actual trade value. Maybe a B prospect. A lot of teams can scrape some guy off the heap and have him perform at league average or slightly worse. I don't know what Marquis had on Hendry to get that contract. As long as some team is dumb enough to take on Marquis's entire contract, I am not at all picky as to what we get back. It's a lot easier to grab some scraps in theory than it is in practice. For every Kyle Lohse there's 10 Mike Maroths. League average pitchers who take the mound every 5 days have very real value. The problem with the Marquis contract is that he wasn't coming off of a league average season. He was coming off an abysmal season and I find it hard to believe there was that much competition out there that he had to go 3/21 on him. I honestly am stunned that the contract has turned out to be a good deal.
  8. If his ERA stays 3.75 or lower, that ain't gonna get it done. I think Ryan's going to become a very rich man. I would think his injury history would come in to play and lower his value some. I also expect Demp to give the Cubs a pretty good discount if they want him back. Just seems like the type of guy Demp is. Id go 3/30 with a 4th year option based on innings pitched. Isn't his injury history pretty much just TJS 4 years ago?
  9. Excellently done Lou. I'm in love with Rich Harden.

  12. Let him start the inning with a limit of not allowing him to start an AB with over 90 pitches. Have Hart ready to go.
  13. Yes. They are either going to make us all very happy, or crush all of us very hard this year. The team in 84 was the only one in my lifetime that could be close. I think the 69 team was great, we know how that ended. Edmonds would like to tell NSBB to suck it by the way. Did the 69 team maintain this pace this long, or were they already flailing by now? The '69 team tanked about late August, IIRC. Into early September. 5 games up on September 2nd, then lost 7 in a row to get knocked out of first. Of course the Mets had to play out of their minds down the stretch as well to make it not even look close.
  14. Nice send by Quade, I thought Theriot would be meat.
  15. They said on the broadcast today that he's doing much better.
  16. For the NL it's the Brewers if Sheets stays healthy, if he doesn't stay healthy, it's probably still the Brewers, I'd give the Mets/Phillies like a 20% chance, Cards about 15. For the AL it's whoever finishes 2nd in the East (Boston, TB, or NY.)
  17. What the hell was Rowand doing sliding on that one?
  18. Care to share that secret with the rest of us? Sure. Thanks to the poster who originally PMed this to me... LINK You'll need TVANTS, a video streaming program. The reason they PMd it was probably because they don't want it out in public. I'd edit and PM those who were looking for it. I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I'll edit my post just to be safe. I hear the CIA monitors NSBB like crazy. More so it doesn't become a well-known site and it winds up getting shut down. It's what happens to all the tv links sites once they get popular, they're shut down.
  19. Man when Edmonds pulled that crap in a Cards uniform it was infuriating. Still kinda is. That was right there.

  21. Geo has started all but 10 games this year.(3 of those starts were as a DH.)
  22. And then he reads Ramirez's line drive well and doesn't get doubled off.
