  1. Re: Z- there's also the chance that Z is rested down the stretch depending on the Cubs' lead.
  2. Sulley wanted him as a starting CF.
  3. I don't like the possibility of the 6th best team in a league winning the world series.
  4. Well they'd have to pay his contract, and assuming they were the team with the best priority to claim him, then yes they get him.
  5. I think we can start considering him in the team's Top 10 prospects list. badnews is gonna have to change his name to goodnews Weak.
  6. I think that's likely, considering they know he has previously expressed a lack of interest in ever playing there. He went to SD as cheaply as he did (at the time) for a reason, he wanted to be in that area. I don't think he'll change his mind and go to Boston. With that said, if he does decide to enforce his no trade clause, then SD has to pull him back, right? Then if they try to put him on waivers again, it would be unrevocable. If Boston claimed him again, can he refuse without retiring? SD wouldn't technically be trading him, so his no trade clause would be irrelevant, right? It's probably a moot point, SD wouldn't put him on unrevocable waivers and get nothing for him. I think that when another team claims someone on waivers, it's still considered a "trade" whether or not the team gets anything for it. If his no trade clause would apply now when Boston puts in a claim why wouldn't it apply then when Boston puts in a claim. After all, any trade in August is just a swap of guys who are on or have already cleared waivers. My guess is that if a scenario like this happened, Boston would have bought the rights to a player who had no obligation to play for them, and would be sitting on his butt somewhere in SD. However, Boston is probably going to be able to figure out whether or not Giles would actually refuse to play for them by just phoning his agent, and then wouldn't make the claim, unless they really wanted him not to play for Tampa. Because the first claim leads to either a trade or a revocation of waivers. The second claim isn't a trade and can't be revoked. The Pads aren't violating his no trade clause by releasing him the second waiver round. Those aren't the only two options. The waiving team can let the player go to the team at no cost a la Jose Canseco to the Yankees and Randy Myers to the Padres. I don't know how this affects NTCs though.
  7. I can't see a reasonable argument putting Rivera over Berra.
  8. I think I officially declared the Cards dead when they were in 1st place earlier this season.
  9. I'm not sure I could think of a worse comparison owner to owner.
  10. I'm fairly certain it's either winning team or nobody. Yep, if they can't work out a deal, the Pads will either revoke the waivers on Giles and take him back or let him go to Boston for free. They can put him back on waivers after that, but those would be irrevocable, and first in priority to claim him, gets him.
  11. 26-25 when Soriano doesn't start.
  12. when you're on a WS contending team, the goal is to have everyone on the 25 man roster above average. Is that really ridiculous to you? The thing is come October Jason either A. wont' be on the WS contending team's roster, or B. will fill the role of 11th pitcher, in which case he'd be above average.
  13. I've now read elsewhere(read: BTF), that the league rule is no longer in place, which sounds familiar now that I saw it. Only differnece without the league rule is that the Cubs didn't have a chance in addition to the Angels and Rays.
  14. FWIW, he was sort of a victim of bad timing, too. He probably would've used that money on Beltran or someone else better had he had the opportunity earlier. It seemed MacPhail and/or the Trib was unwilling to OK monster contracts. That's not to excuse his poor allocation of resources otherwise, though. For this team I would rather have Soriano then Beltran anyday. I'd rather have Beltran in CF and Carlos Lee in LF with that money. I'd rather have Beltran in CF, Carlos Lee in LF, and Vlad in RF with that money.
  15. Brian Giles has a workable contract, and isn't overpaid for next year. The Mets, Cardinals, Phillies, and D-Backs could all use him this year. The Braves have a GLARING need for him next year along with some others I don't care to research. And that's NL teams alone. The only teams that we know didn't pass on him were Boston, Tampa, and Anaheim, and that's madness.
  16. The Cubs sound like a logical candidate. Hendry was looking for a bat off the bench at the deadline. The Mets make the most sense however, as hed likely get the starting job in left. Cardinals and D-Backs are other likelies. Giles was definitely claimed before he got to the Cubs. I'm guessing it was the Braves. Why do you say that? Becuase I didn't realize major league GMs were idiots.
  17. The Cubs sound like a logical candidate. Hendry was looking for a bat off the bench at the deadline. The Mets make the most sense however, as hed likely get the starting job in left. Cardinals and D-Backs are other likelies. According to Cbssportsline.com, it was the Red Sox the put the claim: Brian Giles, RF SD News: The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Boston Red Sox have claimed Padres OF Brian Giles off waivers. Boston now has 48 hours in which to try to work out a trade with San Diego. If no trade develops, the Padres can retain Giles, whose contract includes Boston among the 10 teams with with he has veto power for a trade. The mets are effing morons.

  19. Not necessarily. On average I believe it's true, becuase you're less likely to face horrible hitters in the 9th inning(pinch hitters) You're not going to have nearly as many pinch hitters in the AL because of the DH, though. And even if it's in the NL, there's a decent chance that the pitcher was double switched so the No. 9 spot might not even be the pitcher's spot anymore. It might be a little bit tougher, bot not that much tougher as to make designating one player to be the closer and only pitch the ninth inning that important. I'm not arguing for the importance of closers, just saying that the 9th is when teams go all out more than any other inning. And I think pinch hitters are a lot more common for position players in the AL, because of the DH. You don't have to worry about holding back a bench guy to hit for the pitcher in extras. You can pinch hit for your crappy 8 and 9 guys with actual bats in the 9th, bring in their defensive replacements for the 10th, and go with that lineup the rest of the way.
  20. I mean, really. Did anybody seriously think that he was going to do that all season? I did until he got a code red. Then I knew everything would be fine.
  21. Cardinals plz. And Dodgers in the first round.
  22. Aramis would need to go on a tear and hit like, 200 more home runs in his career which is tough since he's on the wrong side of 30 now. Derrek Lee actually could have had a shot after that huge 2005 if he didn't hurt his wrist, derail his career and lose all his power :( Ramirez turned 30 at the end of June. Saying he's on the wrong side of 30 makes it sound like he's got 3 seasons left.
