So, do we totally dismiss a player's minor league stats? Or what the club's scouts think of a player? It would certainly be a gamble letting Cedeno start at short in 2006. But if that gamble meant 10 million dollars toward upgrading serious deficiencies somewhere else, it makes sense. A lot of people advocating Cedeno over Furcal are wanting Giles over what they fear will be an average or maybe even below average player in right field. Some are suggesting the club spend the extra dough on a top of the rotation pitcher. Either way, it's not like people that want Cedeno are saying he's better than Furcal, they're just saying he's not 9.6 million dollars worse. Now, your last sentance I agree with just because I fear Neifi will be starting at either SS or 2B due to the coach and the contract he just signed. -
I think that ended a long time ago. :lol: It certainly was part of the longer running "anybody but LaTroy for closer" bandwagon.

I don't really want Giles 2nd. I'd rather have him 3rd. Giles would have the highest OBP, so you want your power (Lee, Ramirez) getting the cracks at knocking him in. But Giles also has the ability to knock home some runs. In a perfect world, the Cubs would have a 1-2 combo (Furcal and Walker/Murton) who could get on base 35% of the time in front of Giles, Lee, and ARam. Giles between the 2 RHs would be nice, but I'd rather Lee and/or Ramirez hit with a runner on 40% of the time, than Ramirez and/or Murton/Barrett/whoever. Furcal Walker Lee Giles Ramirez Murton Barrett Patterson Pitcher Would be a pretty good team/ lineup card. Giles may hit more homers at Wrigley, and wouldn't always be on for Rammy and Murton/Barrrett. :) -
You mean Johnny, right? No, I'm pretty sure he means Giles. Both are discussed in the thread. Damon lives in Orlando anyway. Jeez, it was even in bold print! I don't know how I missed that the first time. Now that I'm hip to the whole conversation I'd like to say the Cubs should try to beat 3yr./30m offer to Giles.

Its probabl6 six of one, half-dozen of the other, but largely depends on what your options ar ein the two hole. If you have Pierre and Furcal, Pierre and Walker, or Furcal and Walker, I agree that Giles hits fourth. If not, who knows? Yeah, that's what I was thinking, it depends on the rest of the team. If Walker is still around, he could conceivably bat 5th with Giles in the two hole. But, I'm afraid Walker is gone and if we're lucky enough to be cheering for Giles in '06, he'll be best served as cleanup. That's why I don't like the direction they are talking regarding Walker. He is a good lefty bat and getting rid of him makes it even more important (IMO) to get a good lefty bat. -

Interesting that he would say Giles would be perfect in the 2 spot in the order. I guess the thinking is that you have .400+ OBP in front of DLee, but I'd probably go Lee, Giles, Ramirez 3,4,5. It would be just as good to have him right in front of Rammy and you break up the righties. -
Why not? Cincinatti doesn't need Murton, and neither would Florida. Just from the Cubs side. Can Murton play RF? Or will they need to get another guy for right and Murton be 4th OF?

I was gonna say, getting Pierre with Dunn would be pretty nice. Depends on the cash I guess, but at least the OF would be set. Or would it? If they get Dunn, who plays RF? I still can't wrap my head around a Dunn deal not involving Murton.

I agree. That's why I think Murton would be in the package for Dunn.

The Cubs would have to give alot more than that. I don't know. The Reds would be getting out from under about 20 million just for next year.

I agree. I can't see Hendry pulling the trigger on a deal for Dunn, I don't have any specific reason. Kearns will come much cheaper. But he'll come cheaper because he's not that good. Agreed. That said, Dunn will likely get big money in arbitration in a few weeks and the Reds always like to trim that payroll (Eric Milton aside). If they think Kearns can come back to earlier success, they may want to keep him and deal the more expensive player in Dunn. Obviously, their first choice to trade for those very reasons is probably Junior.

edgar renteria got $40M / 4 years. O.K., then that's what Petey's guessing. I think it was Bruce Miles that guessed 36M/ 4 years. All in all, that wouldn't so bad, but maybe that's because I was afraid we were talking 5 years/ 55M!

He better lock Pierre up long term without Pie waiting in the wings. BTW can Dunn play RF? I thought he was not defensively gifted? Maybe Murton would be in the package to Cincy for Dunn? I like Dunn, but the money and defense likely means Kearns is the more viable target, IMO. I thought the same thing about Murton being one of the guys moved. I also agree with all that said Kearns may be the target Hendry settles for. What if Hendry gets both? If Hendry gets both they are set at the corners. Kearns and Murton look to have similar skill sets, don't they? Kearns' success has come when his BABIP is high and that's the same with Murton in his short time up. Murton is still a little younger than Kearns, Kearns is a better defender, Kearns is a little pricier, no? It's an interesting situation. There was a story a couple of days ago in a Cincy paper that said the off-season focus was on trading one of the four outfielders.

One of the things about Kearns that I don't like is that he bats righty. I don't ever think it should be a deal-breaker, but with Todd Walker likely gone, there is/ doesn't look to be, anybody with pop from the left side of the plate. Obviously, a good player is a good player, but I think any target will likely be a lefty.

It's unfortunately the more likely prospect of a 2B/SS combo of Perez and Furcal with Walker traded away and Cedeno riding the bench that's making lots of people sick. Neifi's signing pretty much guarantees that Walker will be dealt.

An update from Gammons on Mike and Mike in the morning. Peter says if the Braves don't come up with something now, Furcal will probably sign with the Cubs, and soon. Gammons said Furcal was arguably the best all around player on the market and the Cubs will offer "Renteria type money". I don't remember exactly what "Renteria money" is- 5 for 55M or something like that?

Actually Gammons said quite the opposite. According to him, the Cubs asked Nomar if he'd consider coming back to play LF, and Nomar said no. His willingness to shift positions is contained to 3B. What respect does Gammons deserve on this site? None! The quotes came from Nomar. Believe them or not. It was listed on Rumor Central on ESPN Insider for quite some time. They are no longer there now since there are a lot more fresh rumors than that one. I think BBB is right. I specifically remember Gammons on Mike and Mike in the morning about 2 weeks ago predicting Nomar at LF for the Cubs in 2006. He (Gammons) may be guessing something different now, but I've heard him at least once since then and he sort of sighs and takes a stab at Nomar's destination. One thing Gammons is consistent on Nomar is that he thinks the former Red Sox player will hit the heck out of the ball next year. Could very well be homerism, but still, he's consistent with that belief.

Yeah, but people here get criticized for saying the same things that person in the article is saying. Sometimes Hendry can do no wrong in the eyes of some. The only way to say something on this board without getting criticized is to not say anything at all. There are at least as many members that feel Hendry can do no right as there are who think he can do no wrong That's ridiculous.
