  1. Last year Adam Dunn walked on three balls when the umpire apparently lost track of the count. This year I bet he'll draw a walk after only a two-ball count.
  2. Reds outfielder Adam Dunn batted against Red Sox phenom Daisuke Matsuzaka on Monday. "I don't think he had his best stuff today," he said, before stopping himself. "I don't know. What am I saying? I've never seen the guy before in my life." Source= Detroit Free Press Adam Dunn is funny, too!
  3. He's lost about 20 pounds coming into the season. Best to look for about 25 steals from him this year as well.
  4. I was ridiculed for paying 25 bucks for Dunn in our auction Saturday. I hope he hits 75 home runs and finds a cure for the common cold.
  5. But, in the case of a guy like Prior, coming back from injury as he is, isn't it useful to see if he gets back velocity that he routinely showed when he was healthy? Don't get me wrong, I watched his entire outing yesterday and like a lot of what I saw. But when the gun was showing 91 repeatedly I did get more excited because I thought maybe it was showing health and more of a willingness to air it out.
  6. I really like that the discrepencey was addressed. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else, and Lou obviously had a comment on it.
  7. If I thought Prior and Miller would be healthy, I'd bet Marquis wouldn't have 100 innings pitched by year's end.
  8. I don't know- that's far different from the Comcast radar display. He was 91 a lot and 93 on that strikeout.
  9. He's hit 90-91 a few times in the second inning but his command still isn't great. Check out the game thread. This may get locked, but- He topped out at 93 on a fastball with movement. He looked like a different person after the first inning, and he wasn't really hit that hard in the first. He's still struggling with command a little, really brought to attention by Hill pounding the zone in his inning of work, but he certainly looked a lot better than any appearance I read about.
  10. Barrett's complete answer to that question, led me to believe he was talking more about weight room activities and less about anything specific to pitching. That would make sense, I just thought it left open the possbility that he's more disciplined in regards to his baseball-specific work than I would have thought.
  11. Yeah, I like a lot of the quotes so far. We'll see when the season gets here (which I wish would hurry up and happen).
  12. Interesting that he'd mention Farnsworth and his work ethic. Kyle always strikes people as talented, but not hard-working. I mean, it's always been obvious that he put his time in the weight room, but off-field escapades left me with the impression that he didn't work as hard as he should.
  13. Rapier wit, mayhap? Dumb and Dumber reference!
  14. If there were only a way to describe the contents of a thread for people who didn't want to read about Greenberg to stay away from such a thread with news about him in it... EDIT- rawaction's rapist wit beat me. :P
  15. If he's called up late enough in the season that he's not in the top 17% of rookies in terms of service time, that keeps the arbitration clock from starting until 2008. If he gets called up late enough that he doesn't have a specified number of days of service time, that keeps the free agency clock from starting until 2008. Same general idea for both, except for arbitration its based on service time relative to other rookies (the "super two" concept), while for free agency its based on a set number of days on the major league roster (somehow 190 sticks in my mind). The Cubs sent Kerry Wood to Iowa at the start of the 1998 season specifically to buy an extra year before free agency; once the required number of days had passed they called him up quickly. And that's why I love this site. Thanks for the lowdown.
  16. I thought I heard somewhere that if the Cubs wait until sometime in May they buy another year of arbitration control over Pie. I thought it was on this board, since this is where I converse with people who know such things.
  17. I'm not questioning his mental toughness, but I wouldn't blame the guy for feeling snake-bit on the injury front and having some reservations about airing it out. He may just lack confidence right now, time will tell. One thing I do know is that I'm pulling for him.
  18. I think Will Carroll had a report a while back that his sources said Prior was kind of holding back on his pitches and not really airing it out. That could explain the lower velocity yesterday. I think Carroll even speculated that Prior might be a little gun-shy given his recent injuries and that his taking things uber-cautiously. (I can't find the link 'cause I don't have BP internet subscription anymore.)
  19. The guy's a beast. I don't see how he couldn't generate some serious power if he develops.
  20. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070303/COL22/703030368/1050/SPORTS02 Another good, albeit hometown, article about Maybin.
  21. Am I the only one who doesn't understand what the point of including this note was? Cart blanche Special assistant to the general manager Gary Hughes spent much of the last couple of weeks driving around from field to field on a golf cart with instructions printed on the front: "Do Not Steal, Maim or Mutilate Gary or the golf cart." Hughes related a story of a recent conversation with Bill Murray, the No. 1 celebrity Cubs fan, who invited him to play golf. "There's something on my golf cart I want you to see," the Wilmette native told Hughes. "I think you'll really like it." "What's that?" Hughes asked. "Cupholders," Murray replied. I didn't get it either. I mean, at least give an explaination of why there's a sign telling people to leave the cart alone. Have the players picked on him before, etc. It was like half a blurb that wouldn't have been interesting even with the other half.
  22. We don't want him, he's a CHOKER!!!!!! Just kidding, I'd love it if he played shortstop for the Cubs.
