  1. So Hendry created a hilariously expensive reliever market. Got it... :P The Detroit Free Press says Tigers' lefty-specialist Jaime Walker might get 4 million a year for three years from someone (probably not Detroit). This looks like a nutso free agent market this winter.
  2. I can't wait to hear Hughes' voice in the spring.
  3. Won't the Reds want starting pitching for him? I know they've been gonzo for middle relievers, but surely that's not going to continue because you can only have 6 or 7 guys in the 'pen. Of course, after everyday eddie went down they do need a prototype closer...
  4. They have Miller on the same track they put Verlander on- September call up during draft year- serious look during spring training. I don't think Miller will win a job in spring of '07, but it's because what they have is pretty good. Zumaya could also go back to a starting role, but with Todd Jones at closer, Zumaya is a couple of Todd Jones' blown saves away from being a great closer. It's a tough call on Bonderman. He's under club control but about to get expensive. It would still take a haul to get him, in my opinion. Just thought of this- Bonderman+Inge+minor leaguer or two for A-Rod. Tigers slide Guillen to third and put A-Rod back at short and let Miller try to win a spot. Serious hit to Tiger pitching, but a serious upgrade on offense.
  5. The Detroit Free Press has an article today that says Detroit will likely try to reach terms with Bonderman this off-season for a long term contract as opposed to trading him.
  6. I think Vance suggested Bonderman for Dunn.
  7. Two more I left out. Tejada would be a big addition and Hendry's been high on him before, if I remember right.
  8. Will BBTN do their daily recaps again this year?
  9. Perhaps Willis and/ or Cabrera are moved this week? (Probably not to the Cubs, but they could be moved for a boatload of good young players)
  10. I can't believe I forgot that one!
  11. This could be a good spot for news/ rumors for the next couple of days. Starts today in Naples and I wonder if Hendry will be looking for trades while there. I don't think all the Cubs' holes can be filled via free agency, and while the Cubs don't have a ton of guys on the farm they do have money, which is attractive to teams trying to shed payroll or rid themselves of players they don't like. Burrell? A. Jones/ Hudson? Dunn? Kearns? Will Hendry push hard for the free agents he wants this soon?
  12. If they get Soriano, I'm almost certain they'll lead off with him.
  13. I'm guessing most of them would have gotten drunk irregardless and just checked NSBB because they knew the pending deadline. Normally they'd be wiser than to check out NSBB while drunk. Making up words now, Raisin? :D It means without, without regard.
  14. Holy cow, what good news. Now I can still convince myself that they can put together a team good enough to win the NL central next year.
  15. What a way to wake up Sunday morning. Blow up the team. I'd rather wait 2 or 3 years for a shot at being good than watch the looming hodgepodge of a squad that will struggle to .500 in 2007.
  16. That would be a good trade for both teams, in my opinion. I think Bonderman has arbitration this year for the last time. This is Bonderman's second arbitration year. He's a FA after '08. Cool. I knew it was close.
  17. I bet Aramis is more than 13 a year, it's probably the length of the deal that's the holdup, I'm guessing.
  18. That would be a good trade for both teams, in my opinion. I think Bonderman has arbitration this year for the last time.
  19. If true, there's a reason for that. Batista is terrible. He's 36 and he hasn't been any good for 3 years. if by not good you mean better than the major league average pitcher, then yes, he hasn't been any good for 3 years You guys need to get over ERA+. He had a WHIP over 1.5 the two years he was a starter, a K/BB near 1 both years he was a starter, an OBP against over .350 both those years, and an OPS against around .780. He's 36 years old and it's likely going to get worse, he's a terrible option for the rotation. Get over ERA? That is the stat that defines pitchers. ERA is a very good jusdge of how good a guy is. If they give up runs, which help the other team, ERA will show just how many runs a guy gave up. Runs are the name of the game and ERA shows just how good or bad someone is at not giving them up. They're talking about ERA+, not just ERA. It's defined at hardball times as - ERA measured against the league average, and adjusted for ballpark factors. An ERA+ over 100 is better than average, less than 100 is below average. I think TT's saying league average with that one stat doesn't offset below average at others.
  20. I understand what you're saying, but budgetary principles can be stupid things to hang onto. Lets say you have to buy 2 items: You need to buy a TV and a DVD player. You have a fixed amount of money to spend on both. You go into Best Buy saying you want to spend no more than $1000 on the TV, and $300 on the DVD player. You bring $1300 with you. You get there, and you see an unbelievably good TV for $1150. It's more than what you resolved to spend, but it will make a huge difference in picture quality. Do you stick to your budgetary principle and get the inferioir TV that will get you by, and get your nice DVD player with a bunch of options, or do you change your budget around, get the nice TV that will make even a poor DVD player look awesome, and get a midrange DVD player? This is what Hendry is faced with. He has the choice between the really good 3B and a cheap bench, or an average 3B and a moderately priced bench. Which is going to make a bigger difference? Both will cost the same net amount of money; its where you allocate your funds that makes the difference. why should we buy a tv and dvd player when we can get 8 vcr's? :D That's classic.
  21. O.K. I thought he was 3/30. I figure 5 years will be key and your number sounds fine to me, they need him.
  22. Ted Lilly and Gil Meche are better than Barry Zito?
  23. Anyone heard an estimate on what Drew would be looking for? 5/50? I assume he opted out for a longer deal.
  24. I wonder if the Tigers have an opt-out due to injury. I think in the case of both Maggs and Pudge they tried to cover their huge financial outlays with out clauses for knee and back respectively. They're still paying a ton if they have an out, but it would make more sense. Like BBB said, they're taking a risk but they improved their main weakness by trading away from an area of surplus. The money involved tells me they're looking to cash in on this window of about the next three years with studly young pitching on the cheap. By the time Verlander, Maroth, Zumaya, Robertson, Miller, Miner, et al become expensive if they are/ remain successful, Maggs, Pudge, and Shef will come off the books.
  25. Detroit Free Press No money coming from the Yankees, and the two year extension is for 28 million. That's a lot of money, but I guess Dombrowskit went that direction to commit for three years instead of 5 or 6, like the best free agent bats will want. Also, the article says Sheffield will not play first, which surprises me. I guess Casey will get an offer from Detroit. As stated earlier, Guillen could slide to first and Detroit could use all glove no bat guys like, you guessed it, Neifi at short instead. Detroit filled about the only hole they had- a middle of the order hitter- but I think they are paying a lot for it.
