  1. he should get a tons of credit for dealing off choi for lee. that was pretty controversial. Hendry isn't an absolute monkey. He has done some good with his trades back then. Unfortunately, he hasn't done squat recently. true. his last big strike was murton. i think gm's are more wary of him now & don't want their trade to be Lee or Aram for a pile of garbage part III. Funny how a similar wariness doesn't keep Beane from doing it. what big strike has he made recently?? frank thomas? DL Bradley? Antonio Perez? who'd he get for hudson & mulder again? Juan Cruz, Dan Meyer and Charles Thomas for Hudson Dan Haren, Kiko Calero (has been very good), and Daric Barton. (potential to be real good) Looks like Atlanta fleeced the A's but Cardinals did give up a good amount of talent. think he met his match in schuerholtz. haren's era is 5.00 this year. calero's at a respectable 4.15. perhaps he should have kept one of his arms and not put a bunch of money into kendall. and how about kotsay $7 million? payton $4 million? Loazia $6 million? beane's ability to draft really well will probably save the organization from his poor moves.
  2. if we're going by numbers: Hairston v. righties ~ .382 obp murton v. righties ~ .333 obp

  4. if jones was putting up walker's #'s the past 11 days, jones would be enemy #2 behind baker.
  5. Jones : .311 OBP 5 Walks Giles : .401 OBP 28 Walks Slugging? Slugging > Walk If the OPS's are similar, the guy with the OBP that is 90 points higher is more valuable. OPS correlates lmore closely to runs when OBP is multiplied by 1.5. i can't see how that generalization is possible when you combine those walks with a bunch of singles hitters. now put the walks on a team w/ manny, ortiz, nixon and varitek or arod, giambi, matsui, sheffield, and posada and maybe so.
  6. but he doesn't take enough walks! ;) the cubs bench & cf position are insufficient. everywhere else is fine. can't complain about the other positions unless you want to remove one of the kids or walker. The big problem is that too many of these guys are walk or singles guys. Need more power, and ARam needs to start playin ball.

  10. murton was 1-3 against young last monday. dusty must be punishing him for hitting into a double play versus young. probably missed the bunt sign.
  11. jones just catches all kinds of hellll. yet his numbers are right there with the $12-15 million man, Brian Giles. jones 6 hrs & .783 ops giles 2 hrs. and .766 ops the cubs didn't need to spend a bunch of money for another guy who rarely gets extra base hits. the teams loaded w/ those guys.
  12. maybe baker has money on the games, which may explain mabry batting 5th, murton sitting or batting 8th, and not using dempster in the 1st 2 games in san diego. baker's accounted for about half the loses in the current skid.
  13. resign him & he gets hurt parking his car. bum should have dealt walker and kept nomar. :x
  14. Good point. Wood pitching in April was shaky tho. I do recall a rumor he'd be ready by opening day. Too good to be true tho... 3/5's of the rotation out is a tough pill to swallow. Fortunately, Marshall has picked up the ball for the most part. Too bad the Cubs weren't 8 starters deep.
  15. drew, ordonez and beltran. 1. the trib wasn't going to allocate the money for ordonez & beltran unless sammy was off the books. 2. there would have been tons of bithin&moaning about all 3 last year, and this year is early. drew & ordonez are due for the DL anyday now. Jermaine Dye's the one who got away, but Billy Beane passed him, so Hendry can't be faulted.
  16. Yes, there's been a drop since 2003, but what isn't being mentioned is that everything went right in 2003 and the team overachieved. Prior & Wood actually didn't get hurt. The Cubs pulled some reliever from the Mexican League, or wherever he was, and he was a stud. Patterson was awesome until he got hurt, then Lofton came in and played like a young man. Farnsworth was real good. Remlinger was solid, etc..... Altogether, Hendry inherited a pile of crap team in 2002, and people got their expectations way too high in 2004. His biggest mistake is not firing Baker after last year cause Baker's on his way to ruining this season.
  17. I was fine with DLee, Walker, Cedeno, ARam, Murton and Barrett. The Pierre acquisition sounded good at the time but I've had discussions with some Florida fans and they indicate he was a bit over-rated at the time the Cubs pursued him. One huge mistake is bringing in Jacque Jones to be the everyday RF. His numbers had started to decline and he can't hit left-handed pitchers to save his life. Very little plate discipline. I'd have preferred Furcal over Pierre to be the leadoff hitter but hey, Furcal went to the Dodgers for less money so not much you can do about that. Get Felix Pie up on the bigs?? Regarding pitchers, I mean we needed to add somebody solid with Prior and Wood obviously not ready to go. Maddux, Zambrano and...Rusch? Huge mistake to assume Rusch could hold down a rotation spot. His best success has been as a spot starter/middle reliever. 2/3 of the outfield is struggling. 3/5 of the rotation has been rookies. I have to think there were better options out there. If I'm wrong, so be it. But the group of players that we fielded on opening day has too many holes to contend. So what is the plan, get by for this season then get back on track in 2007? It's my opinion Hendry hasn't done enough to make the Cubs playoff competitive this season. Maybe I'm wrong and the DLee injury is the main problem. I know it hurts the team pretty bad. But then why do we stick Todd Walker at first? Get a natural 1B who is comfortable with that position. Just my opinions, I don't expect everyone to agree. Easier said than done. Players just don't fall into a team's lap. Besides Millwood, who got overpaid, I don't recall anyone calling for signing a pitcher. Most of us were cool w/ Jerome Williams, who has sucked, and there were lots of calls for the kids. The kids are up now and the team's 13th in ERA in the NL. It would be hard to win even with Lee.
  18. can't apply some mathematical norm to an abnormal team w/ pierre, neifi, and hairston in the lineup. no doubt they should have tried to steal 2nd when pierre got on. piazza probably couldn't throw me out @ 2nd. but to poo poo bunting at every occasion just cause of some math norm isn't wise. the game's not that simple.
  19. what cf, rf and pitchers should have been brought in then? they're fine @ 1b, 2b, ss, 3b, lf and catcher correct?
  20. how about the murton, barrett & walker fumes?? hendry didn't inherit one hitter who's around now. baker's a much bigger problem.
  21. Not all of our perceptions have changed. The example you set forth above lends credence to those of us that believe that deal wasn't a fleecing, but rather a logical result of being at the right place, at the right time, with the right periphrial circumstances. That is to say, the ARam deal didn't require a genius to construct. The Pirates were hamstrung by salary and inept organizational direction. Hendry needed a 3B and the Pirates were an obvious fit. However, if you look closely at that deal and recall the circumstances surrounding, there exists room for criticism as Hendry allowed Pittsburgh to hold the Cubs hostage with the PTBNL (who ended up being Hill). Recall that Grudz got injured and was out for an extended period. The only logical replacement for the Cubs was Bobby Hill. Whether you are a Hill hater or not, he would have been nice to have on hand during Grudz's injury. However, Hendry's lack of foresight failed to recognize that giving the Pirates a number of days to choose between Hill and Beltran hurt the club due to its lack of middle infield options. Hendry if not remotely the GM some hold him out to be. if it was so easy, why didn't one of the allegedly smarter gm's pull it off then?
  22. Sweep. Cubs can't beat these guys. I mean Mike Piazza is killing the Cubs. Bring on Washington!
  23. another thing stubborn as a baker won't do.
  24. If my math's right, he's 5 for 37 in the last 11 games. Maybe he's pressing too much. Obviously, Murton isn't an option, since Baker's sat him a couple times the past few days. It should be Cedeno, Walker, ARam & Jones, but Baker's too stubborn to do that.
  25. 1 team has singlehandedly killed the Cubs.
