  1. Pretty simple. Look @ what Prior and Wood did in 2003 compared to this year. There's more to it than that. Such as?? I'm not blaming either. It's just those two were great in 2003.. If this is 2003, the Cubs win 4-1 today. Here we go again: Poor coaching. Poor manager Terribel off-season which caused more holes on the roster. A regressed and unhealthy starting pitching A lack of good arms in the bullpen A lack of taking walks No patience at the plate Not starting/playing the best players on the team Injuries No solid day in/day out lineup. Poor manager and probably some more but that sums it up IMO. The Cub offense is better this year than 2003, and they have the same manager. That isnt saying much. What the heck does 2003 have to do with 2005? We won more games in 2004 than we did in 2003 yet we still didnt make the playoffs. THe trade for Lawton and Ramirez, and the fact that the Cards and Astros lost grip of the division made us go to the playoffs in 2003. Things are different now, and teams are better yet we are not. You're the one who brought up 2003. You wanted to know what has happened since then. Well the pitching has went from 3rd to 10th, while the hitting has gotten a little better and the coaching remain crappy. My guess is that the defense is worse too.
  2. Will they look to add an arm to the rotation or will they cross their fingers w/ Wood again?? I've seen stuff in the paper's about Burnett, but highly doubt the Cubs will ante up for him.

  6. Gee what a surprise, the Trib won't admit to a mistake. Perhaps people should turn their hatred towards the Trib instead of Dusty, Hendry, Neifi and Macias.. Just have to hope the Cubs can get Giles and Furcal and that Wood can turn it around, and Prior can become dominant again.
  7. Contrary to popular belief, Neifi hasn't had a horrendous season. Sorry. contrary to your belief, a .300 obp is horrendous. 13th in ops amongst SS's and a very good glove = alright for $1 million. Baker should never bat him 1st or 2nd though. But keep whipping him.
  8. The Cubs will need more OBP than just Giles to fix the offense. Won't Murton, Giles and Cedeno help "fix the offense??" It's not like they're in the bottom tier. The bigger concern should be getting the pitching back to where it was in 2003 and upgrading the defense will help that. Murton I think will help, but I don't expect Cedeño to hit that well in his rookie year. CF might be plugged by Corey, who will have to make major strides to put up a respectable OBP after this year's debacle. CF might also be filled by Felix Pie, who'll probably have a rougher jump to the big leagues than I think Cedeño will have. I don't think those three new faces in the starting lineup is enough to fix the offense. Jmo but Furcal, Murton, Giles, Lee, ARam, Barrett, Patterson & Cedeno could be pretty good. Sure it would be nice to field something better, but the Trib doesn't throw around money like the Red Sox. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs picking up Lofton to hold down the front for Pie.

  11. Drew's played 72 games this year. Probably just more wasted money. Nearly half the budget for this year was tied up in Sosa, Nomar, Wood, Hawkins and Remlinger. The Cubs got very little production from half it's budget. Fortunately, 3 of the 5 are gone next year. The Cubs should deal off Wood and let Nomar walk. With the way Nomar's swinging the bat of late, some team will give him an idiot deal. Given how much money the Cubs will have available for next season, they should have a much better season. Drew got hurt by getting hit by a ball. Nobody can expect that. You are assuming that the Cubs will have a 100mil payroll again. There could be a chance that will not happen. Why would they cut payroll?? The Tribs raking it in as usual and they have to save their beloved Dusty somehow.
  12. With the way Nomar's swinging the bat of late, some team may offer him a 2 to 3 year deal. If so, adios. Nomar in lf would probably last about 2 days. He'd pull something out there. I prefer a speedy up-the-middle of Furcal and Cedeno. Get your obp from Giles.

  14. I figured you would say that. Murton has spent a little over a year in the Cubs system. In that time, he has put numbers way beyond anything he ever did in the Boston organization. But, you're right. There is no way, shape or form that Matt Murton learned anything in the last 12 months. You are absolutely right that the Cubs instructors have nothing to do with his growth as a player. It is absolute coincidence that the numbers he has put up with the DJaxx and Cubs this season were much better than any of the stats he put up in 2 1/2 years with Boston. Thats just luck or baseball variance, right goony? Here is something for which Jim Hendry is 100% responsible: Murton being on the Cubs roster. Hendry lucked into Murton. He has no clue.
  15. Unfortunately, some team will give Burnett a 5 to 6 year deal. Given AJB's past health and the Cubs history, theCubs won't offer more than 3 or 4 years. All this stuff about the Cubs going hard after Burnett is reminiscent to the stuff about the Cubs going hard after Beltran. Essentially, it's pr spin to get the fans all fired up. Hey they're trying.
  16. guess what "certain manager" will be back to use neifi in the problematic way? if neifi is signed as a backup next year, he'll still get 2-3 starts a week under dusty. no, not really. the only reason Neifi started so much is b/c our starter went down for a long period of time. Dusty knows neifi's not a starter on a $100M team. You end up playing what you have. A healthy starter (be it Nomar, Furcal, Cedeno, other) puts Neifi back where he belongs...on the bench. There have been 134 games this year, and Neifi has played SS for 95. That means 39 games Neifi hasn't been the SS, and he's STARTED at 2B in 16 of those remaining 39. That's basically 3 starts a week at that rate, at second base, his secondary position. There's only been 8 games ALL YEAR that Neifi has not played at all in. Dusty loves putting Neifi in the lineup, and there's no reason to think he won't continue to find ways to put him in there next season. Spin of the day. Dusty's evil!! :o Bring back Nomar and Walker and yes Nef will get quite a few starts because both will probably miss a good number of games. Bring in Furcal and Nef won't see nearly as much pt.

Be careful w/ facts. :D If Nomar, Walker and Ramirez stayed healthy all year, we wouldn't have seen much of Neifi. He's done alright for a backup too. Actually, he's 13th in ops for SS's overall and his defense is quite good. He shouldn't be a whipping boy.
  18. What's the record for errors by a SS?? If Nomar can actually play 130 games next year, he could get it. Not if Furcal has anything to say about that Give Nomar a few more games @ SS instead of 3B and he might catch Furcal for the season.
  19. Considering what Manny does offensively and what the Cubs need, his contract (3 and 57 mil) isn't too bad. The Cubs will have to give up something though. Jmo but they should trade Wood for Manny. Boston could offer him an extension so he waives his no-trade clause. Might as well get something for Kerry before he gets hurt again and leaves after 2006.

  21. All that matters is how many runs they score and they rank 6th in the NL. Whereas their ERA is ranked 10th. Hmmmmm, guess the hitting is the main culprit. Just a little factoid, in 2003 the Cubs ranked 3rd in ERA and 9th in runs scored. So contrary to popular belief the offense has got better. See this is where I desagree. Runs scored mean nothing if you score 8 runs on one day and 2 runs the next. This team cannot consistently score runs day in and day out. Basically, at the end of the season just looking at runs scored isn't goint to tell you much at all. Yeah the Cubs are an awful situational team, but that arguments irrelevant here where stats is everything.

Just a little factoid, in 2003 the Cubs ranked 3rd in ERA and 9th in runs scored. So contrary to popular belief the offense has got better. I pointed out the reasons to be concerned with our offense(Lee regression, a complete lack of production from the OF) and reasons to think our pitching will improve(No freak injury for Prior, Dempster for a full season, healthy Wood, etc.). In 2003 the Cubs scored 724 runs. This year they are on pace for 725. I guess you could consider that improvement. You think less runs per game in 2005 has anything to do w/ less steroid users??

  24. As other's have said, if you trade Walker, it's better to deal him in the offseason. Perhaps Minnesota would be interested and would give up Radke for Walker and couple other Cubbies. Iirc Radke gets $9 million next year, and Minny needs to fill several holes. The Cubs could give them something like Walker, J. Williams and Mitre. I'll play it conservatively, and won't throw Welly in or any other prospects, since I'll don't want to get hammered w/ MITRE & WELLY ARE GREAT! LOOK WHAT THEY DID @ IOWA!!.... etc., etc... :o
  25. Oh no, please why dont you just tell everyone the "real" reason I dislike Walker, since you have such insight into what I think. I have expressed quite clearly my reason for not liking him, and those reasons have been the same long before he was ever a cub. I guess it is easier to make condescending generalizations just because i dont follow the herd. Uh oh. You used "herd." Uh, ok, um, don't get that.... :-k Just teasin ya. :D That's labelling. Oh, I see, but IMB can label me however, right? I see how it is.... The mocking does get carried away. (SEE THE OTHER WALKER THREAD FOR MORE). :D
