  1. I could care less about what he does off the field. I want to win a WS, not have model citizens and choir boys on my team. If he gets me closer and is a stong piece for a WS Championship, I want him on my team. I would like to see a WS Champion in my lifetime. I'm sick of the losing. Baker's being paid a lot of money for being a players manager. It's time for him to start earning some of that cash. He handled Bonds and Kent griping....he can handle Bradley. A guy who may be going to jail soon isn't a "strong piece for a WS Championship."
  2. Since the Cubs have Pie, Giles. However, we shouldn't get our hopes up for Giles, Damon or Burnett. Now Furcal is a possibility. A slim one, but a lot of the big market teams have good SS's, so maybe the Cubs get lucky. nomar's better than furcal...especially when you consider that nomar will be cheaper, possibly more productive and a short-term replacement. if you sign furcal, it's going to be for at least four years, so you might as well trade cedeno. IF Nomar healthy (HUGE IF), he's a better hitter. No doubt. His defense is awful though. Hopefully, the Cubs look @ the future for a change, and sign Furcal. Put Nomah @ 2b, w/ Hairston as the backup. i'm not convinced that nomar + furcal is better than nomar + walker. especially when you consider the huge contract furcal is going to get. Bring back Nomar to play SS and the likelihood of Neifi returning is a lot higher. Bring in Furcal and the Cubs shouldn't have to worry about someone going down for 80 games. giving 30+ mil to an average ss is a pretty stupid way to go about keeping neifi perez off the field. Average?? He's 7th in ops and obp amongst shortshops. 2nd in stolen bases and one of the top defenders. Stupid = pinching pennies when the team has $50 million to blow.
  3. We have to handle the Reds for once. We just need to PITCH. I think the offense is ready to explode this series. We have to avoid a slug fest. I have a really good feeling that after today Dusty is going to give up trying to bury Murton., so we might see Hairston Walker Lee Nomar Burnitz Murton Barrett Perez tomorrow, which would open a big door, IMO. I would love to see Aramis back and Matt hitting second, but for now..... Baker may give up on Patterson and start Murton in lf and Hairston in cf, but his beloved Neifi will continue to bat 2nd, while Murton bats 7th or 8th. Have to hope for Ramirez returning soon. That's the only way to remove Neifi from the 2 hole. Talk about wasting D. Lee.
  4. Will Ramirez return this year?? Would be interesting to see the Cubs offense at full force for once. My guess is that Dusty would start Neifi in LF though. Just need to win 19 in a row now. :o

  7. you have to get the more productive bat...regardless of whether he is a power bat or a leadoff hitter. having a prototypical leadoff hitter isn't that big a deal. walker can bat leadoff. heck, if murton plays everyday, he can bat leadoff. Yes, Walker COULD bat leadoff, but Baker won't put him there. I think the fact that Baker has Neifi batting 2nd now, w/ Walker batting 6th is enough proof that Walker will NEVER bat leadoff as long as Baker's here. :(

  9. Giles would be great, but what are the chances of getting him?? 1 in 30??? The guy's from SoCal and plays here now. Once you go SoCal, you usually don't want to leave, and LA and Anaheim could also make offers along w/ SD. I wouldn't be surprised to see DePodesta offer him some big money.
  10. Damon ends up in either New York, Anaheim or Boston. The Cubs aren't going to outbid the big boys.. Here's some moves to ponder, if Damon signs w/ Anaheim... Cubs trade Patterson, Walker and another filler for Manny.. Cubs trade Maddux & Rusch for Finley and Donnelly.. Yes I know Finley's been brutal this year, but he got hurt the 2nd game of the year after crashing into the cf wall. He's been pretty durable over his career, so perhaps he picks it up again. He's basically a 1-year stop gap until Pie's ready. Cubs sign Millwood, Furcal & bring back Nomar for 2b. Cubs bring back Hairston for insurance. Lineup - - Furcal, Nomar, Manny, Lee, ARam, Finley, Murton, Barrett Rotation -- Z, Prior, Wood, Millwood and J. Williams Pen - - Dempster, Donnelly, JVB, Wuertz, Ohman, Novoa & ??? Bench - - Hairston, Cedeno, ???? Am guessing w/ all the money the Cubs have available, this should be affordable. Maybe not tho. :o
  11. How about Murton in rf?? Is his arm strong enough?? Manny in lf and Nomar @ 2b works for me. Use Walker as part of a package to get Manny.
  12. I think the feeling among the Cubs brass is that Nomar can't play SS anymore, and that Walker has defensive deficiencies and may be their best trade chip. Hoops Glad they've seen the light on Nomar. & Walker Can Nomar play any position though?? I think Nomar can still play short. REmember, he hurt himself at the plate, not in the field. And I'd be willing to substitute defense for his bat. The last thing I want is a good-field, no-hit SS like AGon there again. Well, you're the same guy who wants Nomar in lf and Murton in cf. Zambrano would have 2 fits per game. :o
  13. I'm with you. The infield has been the least of our problems this year. Our outfield, bench, and bullpen have been the death of this team. Overall, we have one of the best infields in all of baseball. Ok, how fast is Murton? Don't jump all over me for suggesting this, but what if Nomar could handle left, Murton in Center, Giles in right, Aram at 3rd, Furcal/Cedeno at short, Cedeno/Walker at 2nd, Lee at first, and Barrett behind the plate? Would you be up for that? Murton looks to have above average speed, but the guy's never played cf. Nomar in lf and Murton in cf would probably be beyond brutal.
  14. I don't see JVB as a starter but he's a top pen option. I'd assume Rusch picks up his option. That moves him into the trade bait/long man slot. Small sample size on Williamson. I'd don't know what the team option costs but when healthy the man rocks. I meant make him the 5th reliever. As you said, Dempster, Wuertz, Ohman and Novoa have been alright. Ah. I have JVB on the 40 man but still in trips in case Novoa or Wuertz falters. He might win a spot on the 25 man out of spring but I go with what is now as a basis. JVB is one more reason why the pen is the least of our worries. Yep, agree w/ you about it being the least of the Cubs worries. Finally, the Cubs have several solid, cheap and young guys. Perhaps they can make JVB the setup man and eventually turn him into the closer. Novoa and Wuertz are decent 7th inning guys, but I don't know if we should count on them as the mainstays in the pen. Their WHIP's are alarmingly high for someone in that position. I think at a minimum you bring back Williamson, and then possibly explore getting another reliever via FA or Trade. I wouldn't mind one free agent pickup. Who should they target?? BJ Ryan would be great, but this is the Cubs and they'll get outbid. Is Guillermo Mota a FA??

  17. Someone page Mark Prior 2003. 6 innings and 2 to 3 runs just doesn't cut it. :(
  18. Wasn't he a FA after 2003?? Don't think they gave him an extension. Weren't the Mets really after him??
  19. I guess this topic should go into the Baseball Discussion forum... Sure Walker's done a nice job, but Castillo's exactly what the Cubs need. .393 obp this year and .373 in 2004. A Gold Glove @ 2b, and he has some speed on the bases. He's not nearly as effective on the bases as before though. In hindsight, what should have been done is ~~~ trade Wood & Patterson and get a stud hitter in return, sign Castillo, and keep Lofton & Clement. Woulda, coulda, shoulda....

  21. Give Van Buren the 5th spot, and the top 5 should be pretty solid. Trade Rusch. It's nice to have him as a 6th starter, but he hasn't been effective out of the pen, and Dusty loves putting the vets in spots where they don't excel (see Neifi for more). Hill should be ready to start next year anyways. Just keep him @ Iowa next year. He should be up soon when Wood goes down in May. Not sure if Williamson should come back. What do you guys think??
  22. I thougt Williams was going to be in the rotation regardless...Prior, Wood, Z, Maddux and Williams. I didn't think Williams' position was contingent on what Maddux does. Would prefer them signing Millwood.
  23. More could have been done the previous offseason. There was enough on the market to make the Cubs a very good tream. Why couldn't they get Tejada or Vlad? Hendry was very shortsighted, and now I could definitely see them overspending on crap this offseason. Whose the last player the Trib signed to a contract lasting longer than 4 years?? Hendry doesn't sign the paychecks. They could have had the money to get Vlad. It just would have taken some outside-the-box thinking by Hendry. The Yankees needed a RF after 03. Sosa was still productive, but on the decline. At the time, I'm sure the Yankees would have loved to have him. So you give him to the Yankees, if he agrees to waive his NTC, and use the freed up money to sign Vlad. Uh huh, give him up for nothing and watch Vlad go to Anaheim for 5 years and $75 million. When the Trib actually signs someone to a deal over 4 years, I'll start giving credibility to such scenarios.
  24. Another good outing for Williams. Wouldn't mind him back as the 5th starter next year. Sure hope Maddux either accepts a trade or retires. Can probably get just as much production from Williams @ a much lower cost next year. Ok watch Williams get bombed now. :o
