  1. I was at that game, and almost died of sun poisoning.
  2. Yeah, like totally, fer sure. No, he wouldn't make the HOF if he died tomorrow, but project his numbers over a 15 year career, and he has a legitimate shot. He WOULDN'T? yer kiddin', right? not many players who die at 26 make the hall of fame.
  3. I don't think comparing Pie to Patterson is all that dumb.
  4. his belly button appears to be the size of an apple
  5. bump to congratulate dunn on his $weet contract
  6. Haha, ever notice it's the Dunn Detractors that keep these Dunn threads alive? I love it.

  8. But could it be a relevant statistic for how many bases a player reaches per plate appearance? That's at least how I always interpreted SLG, and I think adding walks would give a better number for that purpose.
  9. In 2004 Dunn had an Away OPS of .925. His home/road splits aren't nearly as concerning as someone like Soriano's. In 2003 he was awful away, 2004 he was great away, and 2005 he was okay away. I'm not that concerned about it.
  10. yes, that's what i'll call it.
  11. Correctomundo! Wait, Rocket invented OPS? no, i invented something BETTER than ops
  12. A lot of people say that a problem with SLG is that it doesn't take walks into account. So why couldn't you just add walks into the equation? (BB + h + d + 2t +3hr)\(AB + BB)? Wouldn't it give a more accurate description of how many bases a player reaches per plate appearance? Is this stat already used and I don't know about it? Or (more likely), am I missing some obvious flaw in this where it makes the stat practically worthless? Thanks.
  13. Why didn't Hendry sign him instead?!?!?!?!? especially when it was a cheap contract!!
  14. Awesome. Too bad Carrie's answer sucked.
  15. I really don't think anyone was arguing Dunn is better than Lee.
  16. Well, it's called Most Valuable Player, not Most Outstanding Player who should have had better numbers if it wasn't for manager incompetence.
  17. Most Valuable Player, not best numbers. Without Sammy, the 98 Cubs would not have made the playoffs. McGwire's numbers were superior, but the Cards did not make the playoffs. Sammy was more valuable than Mac. In my opinion, it wasn't even close. I'm so tired of this argument. It's not the most valuable player to their particular team. It's most valuable. Period. As much as I love Sammy, McGwire should've won the 98 MVP. It's an individual award and team accomplishments should not play any factor whatsoever. If the team had nothing to do it, then call it the Most Outstanding Player, not the Most Valuable Player. By our logic, only really famous players should get into the Hall of Fame, even if they have amazing career numbers but weren't household names.
  18. Most Valuable Player, not best numbers. Without Sammy, the 98 Cubs would not have made the playoffs. McGwire's numbers were superior, but the Cards did not make the playoffs. Sammy was more valuable than Mac. In my opinion, it wasn't even close. So you think Pujols deserved it over Lee then?
  19. Not by a long shot. .299/.470/.752 217 OPS+ 70 HR 147 RBI .308/.377/.647 160 OPS+ 66 HR 158 RBI Just looking at the numbers, it's not particularly close.
  20. Far superior? Mark McGwire has a higher career OBP (.394 vs. .345), higher career SLG (.588 vs. .537), which translates to a 100 points higher career OPS (.982 vs. .882) for McGwire. McGwire also has a much higher career OPS+ than Sosa (163 vs. 129). And McGwire was robbed in the 1998 NL MVP race.
  21. The same reason Ryne Sandberg can't get a job. Hopefully Sosa can get a job writing really crappy Yahoo! articles.
  22. That signing doesn't really change his availability that much, if at all.
  23. Woody Paige also happens to be an idiot.
  24. Ehh, I think him leaving the last game in 2004 is now officially insignificant. At least to the point where it won't sway any HOF voter's opinion one way or the other. I say he gets in 1st ballot. Unlike Giambi or Bonds, there is no court testimony or BALCO documents that link him to steroid use, all they have against him is suspicion without any facts.
  25. And out of curiosity, do people who dislike the WBC concept also dislike the concept of playing in the winter leagues?
