What he meant (I assume) is that he's somewhat of a novelty because of his unorthodox pitching. Nomo had the crazy windup, and Mats has the gyroball. The difference as I see it, is that a rotation is something that can be adjusted to after a while. However, a pitch is something that, while it can be expected and looked for, can still fool you time after time. All hitters know what a curveball is, but it still fools them time after time. So, as far as unorthodoxy goes, Mats' legacy should have the one up on Nomo's. i thought the gyro ball was a myth
