  1. Right now the Cubs, A's and Orioles are rumored to be interested in him. There are other teams who have contacted his agents, but my guess is that most of them are looking for him to DH like the O's and A's are. Since the Cubs would be willing to give him a shot to play the field, perhaps we can get him to settle for a one year deal with a mutual option or player option.
  2. Yes please. Perfect stop gap until Adrian Gonzalez is available. If he busts and Gonzalez is available in July then great.
  3. Yeah, if someone would get Harang fixed he can eat a bunch of innings... he was as good as Z at one point. And, like Z, he's also been Dusty'd. Yeah, cause Z's arm really deteriorated after Dusty left I'm not sure how you could argue it hasn't. Pitcher's arm strength peaks in their early to mid 20s. Young Zambrano got away with poor command because of his velocity. Even though his velocity is only a notch down from where it once was, it's allowed hitters to square up more often and hit more consistently off of him, causing a drop in his production. Had Zambrano learned control to compensate, perhaps it'd be a different story. He hasn't. Dusty Baker had nothing to do with Zambrano not being as good as he was circa 2004.
  4. Trout seems like a tweener. Or if he can stick in CF at a high level, the good Grady Sizemore. It's a thin line, but if he makes it, he's going to be great.
  5. The A's have broken off talks with Iwakuma. Apparently he wants Barry Zito money. Hilarious.
  6. Does Michael Barrett fall under this? The previous four years combined prior to becoming a Cub he had a 70 OPS+. Chris Davis' is 95.
  7. Well that answers the questions about whether or not he and Girardi have a good relationship, not that the question mattered to us. Why not give Greg Maddux a call.
  8. I'm all for adding Chris Davis and Nick Johnson/Lance Berkman. On the chance that Nick Johnson/Lance Berkman or Aramis Ramirez go down, Davis could step in and provide adequate production. Alex Gordon would fill that role nicely as well.
  9. I wouldn't trade Justin Upton for Mike Trout.
  10. No: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/thoughts-on-nishioka/
  11. Wouldn't he be better off trying to land a bench coach job somewhere in the majors instead of another AAA job? At least in that case if the manager gets canned he would likely become the interim manager getting his foot in the door(s) for a manager job down the road. If he couldn't find one, I'm sure he could get a different coaching spot somewhere for some team. Third base, first base, infielders, etc.
  12. no, but only because it's so much harder to find a shortstop. I don't even think Justin Upton would make 30 errors at shortstop. Of course I'm kidding. I would give up Castro if only because Upton is much more of a good bet longterm. He's got a chance to be a top 10 bat and is only 22. Obviously, I still wouldn't do it in our situation. If we had a hole in the OF and not 1B I'd pull the trigger. We've already got four serviceable or better OFs (granted none of them are impact level bats at RF). A lot of other teams would be interested him and would have a greater need than the Cubs, driving up their willingness to pay for him.
  13. Millwood is coming off a 4-16 5.10 ERA season. If he's dirt cheap I wouldn't mind taking a flier on him. If he busts in April its no big deal. I really don't see how he would be different than Silva as far as likelihood of being useful. He's got upside.
  14. He's going to lose a lot of ball games and get fired within four years like every other recent Pirates manager. Managers can't turn crap into gold. The last Pirates manager to finish over .500 in his career with them was Chuck Tanner. To put that into perspective, Chuck Tanner was born before the Stock Market crash in 1929 - and was one of the youngest managers in the game when he was hired. The last Pirates manager not to have a season where they lost 95 or more games was Danny Murtaugh. He died before Tanner became the Pirates manager... And in Cubs random useless info, they have lost 95 games four times under MacPhail/Hendry. In the 119 years prior to that they lost 95 games just four times.
  15. I think Carlos Pena would be an excellent acquisition for the Cubs for two reasons. One would obviously be Carlos Pena being a solid hitter and decent defender whose fly ball tendencies would work well at Wrigley. Another would be that it would possibly signal a fundamental difference in the way that the Cubs evaluate hitters. After seeing what Larry Rothschild did with Silva, it would be interesting to see what he could do with another low walk/strikeout high ground ball starting pitcher. The Cubs really haven't had one in his time here other than Silva. Well Greg Maddux I guess. Maybe Sergio Mitre.
  16. Since the Cubs aren't going anywhere next year, a little void in my heart will be filled with the re-acquire of Kerry Wood no matter if its a good or bad business/baseball decision. I can't be the only one who thinks this way.
  17. Reed Johnson says hi.
  18. He could teach that. It's kind of important. Anyways, like others have said no because he would probably irritate people too much. I do think it'd be worth a flyer if his ego was in check, maybe say 8 or 9 years after he's out of the game like McGwire.
  19. What's going to happen is that the Cubs will lose their second round pick, and probably their third round pick so Wilken will have a huge gap between picks and he will pick a consensus third round player in the top half of the first round because he wouldn't last to the Cubs second selection in the fourth round.
  20. It's someone in the 90s. It's happened each of the last ten years. I can't see BA's top teams from the 90s, they have all of them listed since 87 but no access. http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/rankings/organization-talent-rankings/2005/26903.html a quick glance at old top 100s would lead me to guess the 1998 Marlins or 1994 Blue Jays
  21. then you have to define "position player". its not fair to make a rule only apply to half the mlb players. theyre all baseball players who can play every position if need be.
  22. Of course they would. That's basically asking for three of the four cubs worth a damn under 25 and not asking for castro because they no it would be impossible.
  23. You'd think teams would have learned from their mistakes about giving guys like Fukudome and Matsuzaka large contracts. I am not saying there won't be one to live up to it again, but that's a lot of risk tied up in a large investment and the reward isn't all that higher than spending the same amount of cash on a similar MLB proven player.
  24. wasn't our starters era 4.2 or so? thats not bad and this year was a bit below average, but it was hardly the problem. our anemic offense and bullpen was the problem.
  25. Wasn't Larry's first year here Girardi's last year? At the very least they have worked with each other before and could be on good terms. (or bad).
