  1. You would rather give up young prospects for Pierre than just money for Furcal???? I question that...
  2. being a nah sayer, the braves still have the upper hand...
  3. You are comparing Nomar at his best...He's done playing short stop for any period of time...If you want his bat in the line up you are going to have to play in some where,,,,I think he might be done What in the blazes does that have to do with anything. The goal is to get top production out of each position. You wont find any (save Arod) Bobby Abreu's or Barry Bonds at short stop. As for him being nothing special.... Dude has a .320 career average. Since 2000 (when he was stellar, as you pointed out) he has batted .289(injury shortened), .310, .301, .321/.297 (redsox/cubs), and .283 (he batted well above .300 after the injury). Those stats are still VERY good and still put him atop most of the other SS's baseball. And cheaper too.
  4. New Cubs theme: The more we spend the less talented players we have.... That is great... I know what you meant but I read it differently the first time Salaries matter. There is a budget. The more they spend for lesser talent, the less they'll have for greater talent.
  5. Maybe the Nomar from 2000......He's done being a top tier player...Put him in LF and he is nothing special......
  6. Sure but not signing Furcal because we are 1 mil off and playing Nefi everyday will guarantee the Cubs not to make the post season...Isnt everybody tired of settling.....Think about last season...We went into last year losing 75 hrs(or so) from the corners and replaced them with no production....How could we have even thought our team was better from the year before when we came up short.....At least make the effort to try and win with the best team......I hate waiting for lightning to strike every year and someone to have a career year
  7. Worry about winning this season......In two or three years if we have a WS ring no one will complain about the budget.... The Cubs should have enough money to sign Furcal, Giles, and Burnett to 10 mil a year seasons.... Sign Giles to play RF and you won't have to worry about Pattersons production in center....Sign Furcal and Cpatt won't have to keep leading off and just maybe he can develop if he gets a chance to hit 7th in the line up for 162 games.... Actually use the farm system and the budget won't get to high if used for the 5th OF and extra infielder....Or maybe acutally play Cedano and Murton and not waste 5 mil on Jermony Burnet(sp) and whatever Hollinsworth was making... Remlinger etc. etc.
  8. what about guys like williams, hill, pinto, & perhaps guzman & marshall (if they can stay healthy) to go along with prior, z & rusch? The Cubs have the money to spend....Spend it wisely but spend it
  9. I'm guessing if we sign Burnett, a few of those pitchers will be going...especially Williams. Maybe Hendry is trying to build a powerhouse here... if he goes out and gets Giles, Furcal, and AJ, he'd be well on his way. The offense would be solid and the starting pitching would be absurd. We can only dream... I've said it before, if healthy (BIG IF, I KNOW), that rotation would be incredibly imposing, especially in the playoffs... Z, Prior, Burnett, Wood, Maddux.. =P~ =P~ =P~ My prediction is Kerry will end 2006 as the world's most expensive setup man. If Healthy all year and he has 45 holds with Dempster getting 45+ saves ....Sounds good.....
  10. Murton is already penciled in as the starter in left field. Not sure about Walker's arm either. I truly believe he was signed to be traded. I think Hairston will be the supersub, and if the Cubs don't sign a centerfielder this offseason and Patterson doesn't show them something in spring training Hairston could very well be the starting CF in 2006. and people are complaining about pierre being in center for the cubs??? Just my analysis of what might happen. Of course, alot of this would depend on the Cubs signing Furcal. If they don't sign Furcal then I would bet they will surely sign a centerfielder to fill the leadoff spot. I don't think Hairston is that bad of an option to fill in, considering he makes far less than Pierre. If that is the case and Hairston doesn't produce you would have Pie in the wings, although I would hope they give him another full year in the minors. this like most things is pure speculation, but why cant the cubs sign furcal & trade cp/mitre for pierre? pierre can lead off & furcal can bat #2 moving murton down in the lineup. I dont like having two leadoff hitters in the lineup. The way I would work it is go for one of them and that's it. Trade for Pierre bring in Nomar. Sign Furcal bring in a better CF. Remember Vince Coleman and Willie Mcgee during the Mid 80's.....I hated them but that was a team that made you nervous...pure speed
  11. Is there a market to trade Walker? If there was I think we would have traded him last year at the deadline....I think you are right about Hairston though...
  12. This might have been stated before but what is the thought on playing Walker in Leftfield......I remember talk about Him playing there his first year for the Cubs when we had Grudz,,,He would be a cheap outfielder and insurance in case Ronny fails to impress....
  13. What about Crede? The Ram only has 1 year left before they move him to 1st base At the 10:20 AM CDT Sportscenter Update on ESPN Radio 1000, Bruce Levine did say that the Cubs and White Sox have been discussing a Todd Walker trade. Hoops Who from the Sox that has cleared waivers would we even be remotely interested in?
  14. I thought the same thing about Clemment!
  15. Over pay him and istall him as the leadoff hitter,,,,Give him 10 mil a year...Heck we are paying 15 mil for Balt's Right fielder.... 1st priority- Furcal 2nd priority- Left hand batting outfielder with power---Giles or Klesco 3rd...A starter...( I love Kerry but we can't count on his arm Starting) Burnett is the Top target but It will be hard to get him,,,I look for a trade for someone like Kip Wells Resign Jerry Jr to play second and let Cedano beat him out. Start Murton,Pie,or Sing in the other OF spot... world series in 2006
  16. Could someone post the highlights of the article....(if there are any more) My works fire wall prevents the Daily Herald.... Furcal would be great, along with an left handed outfielder with power..Giles would work...How about Klesco(sp)? I wonder if the pods would want to dump his $$$ We should have about 30 mil to spend....
  17. I wouldn't hesitate one second to sign him to a 2-year deal. As for 2B, I'd like us to acquire Kent or Soriano. Todd Walker doesn't do much for me. I would agree with Soriano....He can be a building block for the team...Kent is better than Walker but I would like to see the Cubs, if they are going to trade prospests use them for someone for more than 1 year.
  18. BTW.....Cool pic of Thanos I agree we can find a corner outfielder. Question is can we find two? Unless Lawton is kept or Murton starts we are stuck having to find two corner outfielders for next year. In a weak FA class and not wanting to sell the farm I really think that an outfield of Nomar/Patterson/Giles or Nomar/Patterson/(Kearns or Huff etc.) could put up some acceptable power numbers. While maybe not perfect it will be far better than what we have now. I think that Nomar can easily put up better numbers than Lawton and Murton in Left. Great point about needing to OFers although I would not put Nomar in the OF.
  19. I think we should spend the money and get furcal, resign nefi and see if Cedano can unseat him at second base. Leadoff hitter, swtich hitter, steals bases, plays short.... 3 years 30 mil.... Nomar might not be done but he seems to be breaking down....Older players often seem to get nagging injuries that keep them out longer... The cubs should stop trying to get stop gaps and go after players that can be cornerstones for several years.... The same goes for corner outfield positions....try and get a Vernon Wells type outfielder in a semi salary dump and leave the other remaining for rookies like Murton/Pie/Sing...A guy like Giles would have been great 5 years ago but if you sign him to 3 years or more we will be in trouble..
  20. I agree with you about trading guys to net major league ball players...Gms get scared when Dontrell Willis or Jon Garland start to play well...For the most part I think the cubs should trade away there minor league talent then buy them back in 6 years if they pan out...We should be acting more like the yankees and red sox and use other teams as our minor league system....Keep only 2 or three guys away from the block and trade the others...I would keep only Pie and Harvey but both could be had if it made the difference between playoffs and no playoffs.....
  21. First I don't agree with trading Barrett...On a team that cannot score runs we need all positions to hit above thier weight... A.J. would be a nice addition but I'm sure the Yankees or dodgers will outbid us.... I'm in favor a Furcal at short and re-signing either T.Walker or Grudz for second...With Cedano either traded or the top backup The Cubs should have a lot of money to spend with few top A-list free agents....I see a salary dump type trade coming the cubs way....Say Vernon Wells and Ted Lilly(or this class of pitcher)....
  22. I'm starting to like the closer bandwagon myself....Give Kerry and the Cubs the best oppurtunity to succeed.... In '06 Either move Dempster and or Rusch to the rotation and hope J.Williams, Hill,Guzman, mitre, wellmeyer or a someone else can step it up. I wonder if the vets on the cubs will pass thru waviers and a few trades could be made to acquire some talent for 2006. Burnitz, walker, or even Dempster come to mind( do the Giants have any prospects left?) How about Dempster to the Angels for Brandon Wood!! ok maybe not
  23. How about Mark Prior....?
  24. I think he came up as a 3rd baseman when he played rookie league but was soon switched to first....Only recently have I noticed him playing outfield for the Djaxx..Smart idea since DLee will be patrolling first for the next 3 to 4 years.........
  25. They had visions of Arod dancing in there heads.... I don't get how the Cubs can make such a high pick on a HS SS who has iffy hands. Did they scout him for 1 game? He has no value at any other position than ss or 2B. Complete wasted pick and the scout should be questioned.
