Motte's K/9 the last 2 years before TJS was 8.34 and 10.75. This year it's 5.65. Unless he sustains an unsustainable BABIP he can't continue to succeed doing what he's been doing so far - not at this level, anyway. Motte has always been a fastball pitcher, yes. But he was only about 1 MPH faster those last two seasons, so velocity isn't the difference. He was throwing 20-25% cutters, and clearly it was an effective knockout pitch for him. If he's going to keep up his current success, he's going to need to get the same mileage out of that pitch. And he threw the best one I've seen him throw this season tonight.
