  1. Good to see. He is raking the last four games, and he's been piling up walks for a couple weeks now.
  2. To add to the "Screw pitchers" department: Jose Fernandez is getting his shoulder examined.
  3. Fun with arbitrary endpoints: Almora's last 10 games: .317/.417/.463 7BB/3K Since June 20th (110 PA): .278/.355/.464 11BB/11K Also, I think the ship has sailed on him being in anyone's Top 50. Word's out that he has sucked.
  4. To be fair, Martin has also been catching a knuckleballer and a few other guys with poor command, like Aaron Sanchez. BP's pitch framing numbers are probably better, as they account for pitchers, umpires, and other factors, as well. I'm not sure if BP has shown exactly how they capture the effect of the pitcher and umpire. But, it seems like something is needed, rather than just raw data on strikes gained and lost. It has been shown that wild pitchers get fewer borderline calls than pitchers with excellent control. I mean, it's pretty obvious that it would be easier to frame Greg Maddux's pitches than Tim Wakefield's. Here you can see Martin still rates favorably at BP, after adjusting for the wildness of some of Toronto's pitchers: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1819124
  5. walk/strikeout? Yeah. Last 23 PA: 12K, 4BB, 2 hits i been saying for a while he cant really make contact on pitches with a lot of movement. i've watched most games this year and a majority of his hits and homers are either on hanging breaking balls or straight fastballs. I think most players do better against hanging breaking balls and straight fastballs. Not sure, though.
  6. Thanks for helping us get Kyle Schwarber, Edwin!
  7. MLB ranks since the start of last season (entering today): WAR: 6th ERA-: 6th FIP-: 3rd (actually, he probably passed Sale for 2nd today) xFIP-: 5th
  8. So... Junior Lake is at .320/.411/.500 in Iowa with a 13.6% BB rate and has homered in 5 of his last 9 games.
  9. 2.0 is about average for a major league catcher.
  10. Isn't his velocity even up from where he was pre-injury?
  11. Haven't they been in more 1-run games than any other team in the league? How is that boring?
  12. Not only was that not even close to being a strike on Fowler, it was also a horrible framing job. Just embarrassing.
  13. Darryl Wilson begins his professional career with a pinch hit RBI double.

  15. [tweet] [/tweet] So now he's allowed 3 runs in 18 appearances...and cost us 2 games vs. the Cardinals. Doesn't make me feel any better. Does it make you feel better to think of it this way: In that time period, Strop helped us win 14 games, by pitching scoreless innings in high-leverage situations, often against the heart of the order. Or you could continue to be mad about a guy giving up 3 -- 3! -- runs in 18 appearances. Either way... I would suggest not flipping out every time a relief pitcher gives up some runs, though. They all do. And fairly often. It's kind of a thankless job, when troglodytes like you crucify them for giving up a run once, while never acknowledging the times they perform well.
  16. "Ordinary" contender-level deadline deals usually avoid trading their top few prospects and deal the tier underneath that. I'd expand davell's list of players I'd put into the right deal to include basically everyone but Schwarber. I wouldn't be looking to give away guys like Javy, Torres, Sands, Steele, etc. But I'd be willing to part with them in the right deal. Right, but that's why it's nice to have a farm system that isn't devoid of talent. If Torres, Sands, and Steele were the only guys with appeal to other teams, then that's all you have to offer. Since we have other guys, then you can kinda pick and choose which guys you'd prefer to keep. So the high upside, young arms -- who probably aren't at peak value right now -- can stick around, if you offer up different, good prospects that are closer to MLB-ready. At the end of the day, everyone but Schwarber is available, though.
  17. Ahh... makes sense. They probably just didn't want to run Roach out there against the same team he just faced. He didn't really get pounded that badly, and he did get a lot of groundballs, but letting them see Roach again probably isn't the best idea. Hopefully Beeler can follow the same script and get some better results. 5 innings would be nice. It seems their starter is unannounced, as well.
  18. Agreed on it not being a good time for a bullpen start, but we don't really have a normal bullpen anyway, with Wood and Jackson both there. Ramirez being just back from injury doesn't help. But the rest of the guys are healthy and pretty sturdy. And having two long guys helps relieve us of some taxing innings. As much as Wood and Jackson have disappointed as starters, they've helped get us through some rough spots, with starters making quick exits and the like. They've been nice assets in that sense. So, even though we don't have a prototypical bullpen, it might help us in this situation.
  19. So Donn Roach pitched for Iowa last night. I had assumed he would get the start in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Do we just piggyback Wood and Jackson now? Or give a spot start to Dallas Beeler? Or do we buy some retread, a la Clayton Richard, to give us one start? The starting options are pretty thin on the 40-man roster. So... thinking outside of the box: What about Carl Edwards, Jr.? Theo's not been hesitant in using his minor league pieces this year; we clearly aren't saving any bullets. It would be nice to get a preliminary look at him against major league hitters, and he is already on the 40-man. He's had some control issues arise this year, but surely he would be less hittable than Dallas Beeler, right? Maybe we throw him out there and try to get 2 or 3 innings from him and then turn to Wood and Jackson. Or is it a better idea to just piggyback Wood and Jackson and throw Medina or -- gasp -- Schlitter into the pen, with the extra roster spot? And would we even want to start Edwards' clock with his control issues as they are currently?
  20. As long as we keep loading the bases for him, it will be hard to pitch around him, too.
  21. And, ugh... paraphrasing, but "that's something people don't care about anymore because of numbers" after a guy moves a runner over with a ground out. I really hate these national broadcasts.
