  1. Hopefully they decide his medicals don't "look good enough". As far as I can tell, 1B is just about the only position where I can reasonably hope for the Cubs to make a big offensive upgrade. Nick Johnson is pretty damn risky for a team that already seems to be planning on a downgrade in RF. It's only early November and I'm already depressed.
  2. I personally like Green-Ellis there. I think he's the better bet to get a high amount of carries.
  3. That's one thing I should've mentioned after the Oilers game. This team is just boring. They don't dominate the puck like they used to and it's almost like they play Eastern Conference style hockey. I know I've been ripping on the defensemen for their horrible play and bad turnovers, but the forwards deserve a lot of blame too for not controlling the puck as much as they did in the past couple of seasons. Hey, Keith was -4 and Sharp was a -5 last night. Anytime Keith wants to wake up and remember he's good at hockey (as well as Toews, Kane, Seabrook, and Hammer) would be just cool with me. Keith has been a huge disappointment early. This team obviously doesn't have the depth of last year's team where they could win often without the "stars" stepping up and playing at a top level. I don't buy all this not making the playoffs business yet though. We're talking about, what, 15 games played?
  4. He had a 1.2 WHIP. Yeah, because of his .192 BABIP. His babip with the Yankees this year was .236, not .192, according to Baseball Reference. Yeah, the .192 I used was from Sept/Oct because Aramis Fan used the term "down the stretch".
  5. Other than concerns about Guy's eligibility, this was the thing that struck me the most about the game. Can't say I want to see Daniel Moore out there so much though. Hopefully that's largely because of Jones' injury.
  6. hmmm...sounds like too much work to take in (half of) an exhibition game. for some reason i was just assuming it was free.
  7. What was the quality like on btn.com? I just noticed that IU's game tonight is only available there as well (lame). Regardless, I'll probably give it a shot since the alternative is watching "Survivor" (until the Blackhawks come on).
  8. How about the fact that he was virtually untouchable as the Yankees 8th inning man down the stretch last season? What SSR said. Babip of .192 in Sept/Oct (vs his .281 career avg). 6.2 BB/9 with the Yankees overall (his career avg is 4.3). His SO/BB numbers are also down the last few years. It's possible that he'd be very good or even great out of the pen, but it's a huge risk, IMO. One that's probably only worth taking with a low priced, one-year deal.
  9. The only reason to sign him to anything more than a 1-year, (relatively) low salary would be nostalgia or something. When you take the emotion out of it, you're talking about a 34 year old middle reliever with pretty mediocre stats the last two years, too many walks and injury risks.
  10. Heh, I have the same QB situation. I'm leaning toward Ben, but Indy has looked bad on the road at times and is coming off a short week, so I'm not sure.
  11. This is basically my feeling as well. It has a pretty good chance to be a disaster. But it's also probably one of the only ways they give themselves a shot to do something. Obviously it's a move of desperation, but I think we're at that point, so why not?
  12. Lovie, Martz, et al. are (once again) really reving up the rhetoric about running the ball more after the bye week. That's all well and good, but running the ball more isn't going to help anything if you average 2 YPC. Running the ball simply for the sake of having a more "balanced" attack is stupid. If they think they are going to run the ball more, they need to get a helluva lot better at it.
  13. Dammit. Of course it's Hossa again. God, I hope it's not too serious. They really can't afford to lose him for any extended period of time right now.
  14. He had two bad throws on picks and two where his piece of crap receivers hung him out to dry. His other turnover, the fumble, wasn't a freaking fumble and instead was a touchdown. If he didn't have a complete freaking moron for a head coach they win that game and he isn't even attempting the passes he was desperate to make late since he was the only one on offense playing that game. That loss was on Lovie and it's going to go down as a Cutler game because the coach sucks, and despite the fact that Cutler kept them in the game by himself for the first half. I don't disagree, but there were also a few throws that should have been picks, but weren't. Regardless, it doesn't matter. The point is I still support the Cutler trade and I think we all agree Lovie is an idiot.
  15. I still feel strongly that getting Cutler was the right move. Kyle Orton would be dead behind this offensive line. Who knows what the Bears would have done with those picks, but I definitely don't feel confident that Angelo would have been able to piece together a good o-line with them, so I don't know how much it matters (in terms of the Orton v. Cutler debate). Having said that, Cutler was obviously garbage yesterday. Some of those throws were maddening to watch. Then his head coach being a moron made it even worse.
  16. Sort of having the same thoughts. I went from: "Eh, they aren't terrible and as bad as the NFC has looked, they could do maybe something in the playoffs if the line just becomes mediocre." to: "Maybe this team should just nosedive so we can clean house in the front-office." in the span of about 3 hours yesterday.
  17. Fair point. I have nothing against Trammel at all. For some reason I've sort of just been assuming he'll be moving on after what happened after Lou left, but I'm not sure. He's not under contract next year like Larry and Rudy, is he?
  18. I don't want Ryne anywhere near this team, even if it's only as bench coach. I have terrible visions of us bunting in the 1st inning with our #3 hitter. But why would a bench coach be calling for bunts/sacs? I don't object to Sandberg as a bench coach at all. In fact, it makes a lot of sense to me. Wouldn't be agreeable to him as manager though.
  19. Start 3 WR's: Boldin v. NE Floyd v. STL D. Jackson v. ATL Welker v. BAL Pretty set on playing Boldin and Floyd, but having trouble choosing between Welker and Jackson. I'm worried about Welker without Moss there and BAL has slowed him in the past. D. Jackson has had some monster games, but has completely and utterly bombed with Kolb this year.
  20. I'm not saying they will, but him picking up his option says nothing about the Cubs intentions to have him remain as PC. Hand wringing about "business as usual" or whatever doesn't make any sense and I don't think this lends any credence to any theory that Quade (or Sandberg or whoever else) will be managing next season.
  21. It does seem to add credence to the theory that Quade will be managing the team next season. All that's happened is that Larry picked up his option. The Cubs have not in any way stated that he'll be back, correct? He just simply hasn't been fired yet, I guess.
  22. Maybe I'm too biased but the Hammer hit didn't seem terribly vicious to me. Guy had the puck at his feet, and it looked like Hjamarsson was going for the puck. I thought the hit was relatively clean, it's just that the guy was in an awkward position and his head hit the glass. You hate to see a guy go down like that, but I didn't think the result was necessarily reflective of the type of hit.
  23. And your point is? An owner appeasing his fans is going to talk about making the team better, getting better players, investing in the team, etc. Writing nonsense about batting with RISP (something his untouchable GM has repeatedly tried to focus on) after hiring a strange stat dude who is all about needless situational statistics is a strong indication he is directing the organization to be focused on things they should not be focused on. My point is that you're picking apart a glorified form letter in order to justify your preconceived notions about how terribly the team is run. I mean seriously, you think lower error totals and better RISP numbers are going to be the focus of the offseason? While it is certainly possible that the letter is intended to simply say things that "appease the constituency", it's pretty specific wording that leads me to believe there is a good chance he believes it. He could be far more vague about improving on fundementals and being more efficient offensively without singling out things like focusing on errors, moving runners, and hitting w/RISP. To the bolded, you think there's no way that happens? I can see it, particularly the hitting with RISP.
