  1. And no Pat Hughes on the radio broadcast? Guh... Come on, Dempster
  2. There are probaly a few reasons why Soto gets "slack" (if that's even the case): 1. There are absolutely no in-house options that have a good chance to be better than him, even when he's stuggling mightily by his standards. 2. Even with his struggles this year, he's still been very productive for a catcher for the large majority of his time in the majors. There are plenty of reasons to believe he'll produce far better than he has so far in 2011 going forward.
  3. I used impotence as it pertains to the complete lack of power by some of the guys who are actually doing reasonably well. Yeah, I think that's probably fair re: power and the same could probably be said about walks. Last night was just the latest glaring example of their complete inability to take a walk. I didn't realize how terrible 3B numbers have been across the league though. That's almost staggering.
  4. I have no idea how that last sentence follows the previous ones. Well, not sure about impotence, but I think mediocrity is certainly an apt adjective to use. The Cubs don't have anyone really playing at an elite-type level, but don't really have any glaring holes at a particular position other than 1B and C (CF now with the injuries). Both spots where you don't really have other options and where you expect significantly more from the players currently in those positions. Of course, those are the only two guys besides Fukudome who can take a walk. The stars are just perfectly aligned for the Cubs to acquire Pujols this off-season. 1B is a huge problem and the Cubs have the money necessary to make it happen. I just wish I was as confident as many here that it might actually happen.
  5. Fred, you and your stats have done a great job of eradicating what very little interest I may have had in following this game, and I thank you for it.
  6. Good choice, sir. The premptive "if you disagree with me, it's NSBB group think" is a classic. Anyone that has a dissenting opinion here is automatically a fool. Again..your point? Seems obvious. You are playing victim and claiming that anyone who disagrees with the "group think" will be automatically be called a fool. But then you are automatically claiming that anyone who disagrees with you is a fool, or delusional. This isn't necessarily directed at you, BeerHere, but is it not clear that essentially everyone in this thread agrees that trading Z is an option if the right deal can be found? I've seen almost nobody in this thread advocate dumping him for pennies on the dollar. Nor have I seen anyone say that he shouldn't be traded regardless of the potential return. Maybe I missed it.
  7. Whether tons of fans want Ryno to be the manager or not (I think many do), there is definitely at least the perception out there that he somehow got screwed out of the job in favor of a guy that is a career minor-league manager with little/no big league experience (which is sort of ironic). I could absolutely see Ryno being hired as manager at least in part as a way to generate some interest from a portion of the fan base.
  8. Why? Guys do stuff like this all the time. He's frustrated after another loss. I really don't think it's a big deal. He'll probably apologize to Marmol (if that's even necessary) and everyone will move on, unless Hendry does something stupid, which sounds about right. I also agree with the sentiment that if this was, say, Dempster making these comments many of these same people (journalists, fans, Hendry) would probably pat him on the back for being a leader and "holding people accountable".
  9. I really have a hard time grasping that several people whose opinions I respect on this board wish to see Hendry continue on as GM. Or, at the very least, would rather stick with the devil they know.
  10. As Kyle said, Castro is four years younger. He's also shown much better slugging, both in the minors and majors. eta: I guess Kyle said all of that. Glad I could contribute.
  11. I think Hendry missed Hendry saying that. http://www.csnchicago.com/05/25/11/-font-color--blackbEXCLUSIVEbfont-Cashne/kapman_article.html?blockID=528834&feedID=619 :banghead:
  12. I think you also end up in a situation where there are several threads discussing the same topic. It's easier to have a general politics thread instead of six different threads about political topics in which everyone ends up talking about the same thing once the topic divulges. At least, that's the way I feel.
  13. I'd be all for bringing back Kosuke at something like 1/7. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Despite the lack of power, the approach he takes is great, as of course is the obp, which this team needs more of, not less (same could probably be said for power though, I guess). I'm all for shopping Byrd and re-signing Fukudome to a reasonable deal. Having said that, I'd be boarderline shocked if it happened assuming Hendry is still GM. I think Byrd is the type of player he loves and I can't see him looking to trade Byrd to make room for B. Jackson. I think he'll trade Fukudome at the deadline or just lose him to FA.
  14. I must have missed Hendry saying that.
  15. Yeti is the Zambrano of golf. Though I gave up hope for this season weeks (months?) ago, I'd really like to see the Cubs beat the Cardinals.
  16. I don't know about "promised him the job". I think Hendry told him he needed some minor league experience if he wanted to be considered for a major league managing job. I think that's perfectly reasonable as is letting him get his feet wet in the bigs as a bench coach rather than making him a manager. I thought the way Sandberg reacted to not being named manager was a bit much and didn't do him any favors in the eyes of those who were already teped about him to begin with. He's my favorite player of all time but based on his apparent management style in the minors and the handful of articles he wrote for yahoo, I definitely wouldn't want him managing the Cubs.
  17. edit: hahaha...way to jump the gun, dummy
  18. Obviously I have a biased for IU, so I guess I'll just say that upfront. But, the ESPN story doesn't seem to indicate any wrongdoing on the part of IU or Crean in this instance (though it's implied). Certainly they've developed a connection with Indiana Elite, but that's not any sort of violation. The notion that IU received eight commits from players associated with AHOPE and/or Elite is a little misleading as well. Zeller's recruitment/commitment doesn't seem stem from that relationship. Hollowell didn't play for Elite before he committed, nor did Patterson (and he didn't last long with them even afterward). You can see a list of AHOPE players and where they ended up here. Not exactly a pipeline to IU in the past. Really the only concern seems to be the gifts to Parea from Adams. I guess it depends on if he's his legal guardian. I definitely agree that is a little shady, though it may not be a violation. I think it's unfortunate the way these summer programs so often act as funnels for certain schools (despite IU's recent benefit from such a relationship) across college hoops. This stuff obviously dates back to the 80's or 90's with the shoe companies, and it's really unfortunate to see kids used in such a way sometimes. However, it doesn't look like IU/Crean did anything inappropriate by the letter of the NCAA rules here.
  19. But does he have the Derrek Lee high-butt?
  20. even with Barney getting everything to fall in for a hit, he's OBP is only at .348 on the season. i don't really see a need to keep him near the top of the order. Barney's wOBA is actually higher than Aramis and Soto and almost as high as Byrd's (.334 vs .338). Soriano has a much higher wOBA, but appears to be in the midst of one of his slumps(near .600 OPS past 14 days). Barney's been one of our more productive hitters so far this year even with the low OBP, though I understand he's very unlikely to keep this .300+ average up and he's really not walking much at all. He won't stay this productive and, because of that, I'd have no problem dropping him lower in the order. I'd keep Kosuke/Starlin/Pena as my 1/2/3, though. Fair point. Ultimately it doesn't really matter much as long as he keeps it up.
