  1. That's the kind of logic that led to letting go of Ramirez because adding 4 guys' WAR together could replace him. But with a five-man rotation, I think I'd rather have Arrieta, Liriano, McCarthy, Hendricks and No. 5 spot then Lester, Arrieta, Hendricks, Turner and Straily or other No. 5 spot. (Yes, I realize we should be able to get Lester AND one of them, but still). That, and I'm just not interested in giving a non-Clayton Kershaw $25 million per for that many years. If there is a great offensive option at that price, sure, but I'd rather have two quality pitchers than one really good one for that cost and the years. So you're not interested in ever signing a TOR pitcher. Fair enough I guess. Even Samardzija types are going to be getting that kind of money. I think that's fair to say. I would want Clayton Kershaw for that much at his age. But for the most part, just not interested in giving one pitcher that much money and that many years. Because whether we like it or not, that $25 million per season during those seven or eight years will prevent us from doing a lot of other things. I'm just not sure Lester is the guy to go all in on like that.
  2. \ As long as you aren't an owner or your compensation is not tied to the level of profit of the Cubs, you should not have such thoughts. Well, the ticket prices will go up. OK, that's probably not possible. But that, and the fact that even if it's not our money, we all know there is a limit to how much THEY are going to spend, so I guess I can rephrase it to say that I'd prefer they not be interested in paying that much money for a non-Clayton Kershaw and instead spend their money on two of the pitchers I mentioned, provided they don't plan to increase the amount of money they are willing to spend in the near future.

  4. Would it be possible to get two guys like Liriano and McCarthy for about the same combined years and around the same money per season as we'd give Lester? If so, I'd rather do that. Or are those two going to combine to average far more than $25 million per?
  5. It should be pointed out that although I don't think people like Gordon around here, he was the one who broke the Garza deal possibly happening and if I remember correctly everyone else in the city was mocking him.
  6. Winter meetings are in the winter. January or early February, I believe. They are in December every year. It pretty much kicks everything off.
  7. I'm not sure, but the more I think about it, you almost have to think it's slam dunk Maddon is going to the Cubs. I'd assume he would want a different challenge and not go right back to a mid-market or small-market team (save the jokes) and if the Dodgers aren't going to be involved, the Cubs seem like it would be the team.
  8. I know this is wrong, but like hitting coaches, I don't care about managers for the most part. Ned flipping Yost is in the World Series, after all.
  9. Can't believe he laid off some of those pitches.
  10. Yeah, he needs to start mixing in homers in between all these K's like when he first came up.
  11. I've always thought this, but I think I'm willing to give up the last three seasons, seasons in which I'm not even sure we'd have made the playoffs had we even tried due to all the crappy free agents we would have signed, for what might be about to come. I think things are about to become real fun.
  12. Rizzo would have never even been there to desert him in the first place.
  13. No, he's had a couple of genuinely bad mistakes that have been blown to be "recurring issues" when 9 times out of 10 it's him doing something every other player will do. He [expletive] up tonight, but he gets a ton of [expletive] for things that should be complete non-stories and are non-stories with players like Rizzo. Let's keep this narrative going.
  14. No one ever said it was. Sure seems like it. But maybe I'm now just the one making generalizations. People being racist about a ballplayer's mistakes don't mean the ballplayer doesn't make mistakes. It means he's held to a standard white players aren't. Guarantee Castro's gaffe will be a story tomorrow, especially if they lose. Coghlan could have done the same thing and it'd be gone already. Castro has earned the rep man. Earned it. That's why it's a story. And I love the guy.

  16. Sorry boys, but it ain't all racist when it comes to Starlin.
  17. what the hell? Maybe he was trying to artificially slow down his swing/see the ball better somehow? Maybe because he was facing R.A. Dickey. That's all I got.
  18. But Castillo can also play 2B. I think it's a slam dunk he ends up with the Tigers or Red Sox. From what I understand, I don't really think he can at the MLB level, and that wouldn't make a difference in the case of the Red Sox(Pedroia, Betts). I don't know if that is the thought of everyone, though, as the Yanks want to sign him to be their 2B. For the Red Sox, you put Betts in center and Castillo at second and you don't worry at all about JBJ, who just.....it's questionable what he even is at this point.

  20. Felt that might have been his best right there. As far as owning the strike zone? Maybe. But he swung just under a hanging change he could have put on the rooftop. Sorry, yes, that's what I meant. Looked in total control of the zone.
  21. Felt that might have been his best right there.
  22. I wonder if he'll prefer a shorter term deal like Cespedes so he can cash in before he starts to decline? If I'm him, I think I just take the $50 plus million. But I see what you're saying.
