  1. But if he believes the playoffs are a crapshoot, Chapman raises the chances of winning by like 2 percent. If that. using that logic, very good teams should practically never make trades at the deadline for players who will be free agents at the end of the season. Right. I think if a team thinks they are going to be in the playoffs and they believe the playoffs are a crapshoot no matter how many good players they add, that they won't trade their top prospects for any of them.
  2. Agreed. So why is he doing this? I can't figure it out. Well, for one thing, he isn't doing/hasn't done anything yet, so why not wait until he actually makes that trade without the extension before you ask that? Fair enough.

  4. If Theo does this without an extension, does that mean he doesn't buy the theory that the playoffs are a total crapshoot or that he doesn't want to assume we are in the playoffs? What would be his motivation? Of course he believes it. He's been talking since day one about the only way to win a world series being to make the playoffs consistently. Agreed. So why is he doing this? I can't figure it out.
  5. There's no such thing as a final piece to a World Series puzzle. I see Torres as almost entirely as a trade chip. Never pictured him playing for us really. But given his standing, he should be able to get us more than a rental on a (an insanely good one) reliever. If Theo does this without an extension, does that mean he doesn't buy the theory that the playoffs are a total crapshoot or that he doesn't want to assume we are in the playoffs? What would be his motivation?
  6. based on what? 1. That I'm a worrier. 2. Do extensions like this every happen at the deadline? 3. If he is willing to sign for 4/60, wouldn't the Yanks just keep him and extend him themselves?
  7. horsefeathers guys. I know I'm repeating myself, but I don't think this is coming with an extension.
  8. I think the assumption right now should be that Torres + would have to hinge on Chapman agreeing to the rumored extension. can't imagine our FO getting desperate and overpaying when we're still 8 days from the non-waiver deadline I do wonder if they acknowledge to themselves that Torres is a high price to pay but it's the cost of doing business and they think Chapman is the top difference maker on the market.
  9. I can totally respect that. I'll admit I'm probably weird when it comes to sports, because I never go that deep into it when watching my team. Do well, I like you. Suck for a long time, I don't like you. That's probably [expletive] of me. Meh, I wasn't always this way. I used to be like you. Then I got burned hard by Milton Bradley. Made me reevaluate the off-the-field aspect to these guys I had been rooting for. If you haven't read it yet, please do check out that article I linked. It's absolutely gutwrenching. Yup, I've read it, and it's truly awful.
  10. If its Torres and Soler we better be getting more than just Chapman or we are getting majorly fleeced. name the last time theo epstein got majorly fleeced on a trade (without using hindsight - and even then all i can think of is ian stewart) That's actually a great point. OK. Panic mode back down.
  11. I realize reports can get pretty crazy and most won't be true, but I'm starting to get scared and just want us to walk away. I mean, I think.
  12. So you're saying that you didn't want to convict Milton Bradley until the evidence came out? And that was a mistake? That sort of seems responsible, no, i.e. the Duke lacrosse team? What I'm saying is that I don't have to treat my opinions on an entertainment product the same as I do the strict rules of law and order. (For the record, Law & Order as an entertainment product was fantastic.) Chapman may or may not be a turd. But he seems like a turd and some evidence suggest he's likely a turd. That's enough for me to not like him. I'm not going to go around screaming from the rooftops that he should be in jail instead of earning millions of dollars, but the fact of the matter is that he's probably a turd -- and that's going to impact my enjoyment of watching Cubs games. I can totally respect that. I'll admit I'm probably weird when it comes to sports, because I never go that deep into it when watching my team. Do well, I like you. Suck for a long time, I don't like you. That's probably shitty of me.
  13. I don't like "multiple" If we're trading for this [expletive], I hope we're getting something else in the deal too. So, if we're sending multiple guys, it gives me a bit of hope. Of course, the other guys could be complete horsefeathers. I'm starting to panic that we are going to do this without an extension, but I also am prone to panicking.
  14. The Cubs won't give Torres up without an extension..... We are positive Theo won't do that, right? Right?
  15. not our #1 prospect Yeah, ain't nobody taking Torres over Eloy.
  16. I'll agree with your first part 100 times out of 100. Will never agree with your second part. In a perfect world it wouldn't work that way but in my eyes there's going to be give and take. That's the way I'd prefer it to be in that situation. Gotcha.
  17. Again, though, I'm pretty sure it's been Chapman who has said he has no interest in starting.
  18. Am I reading correctly that you are saying even if a woman makes something up, it's not a big deal for the athlete because either way he's making millions? Not really. I prefer women who are victims to have justice and voice and would be willing to sacrifice an athlete who is still going to live a pretty prosperous life having some negative publicity every once and a while to attain it. I'll agree with your first part 100 times out of 100. Will never agree with your second part.
  19. For me, it's simple. I spent months vehemently defending Milton Bradley on this board. I told everybody who would listen about how Jim Hendry was acting like a petulant child and his overreaction was what was killing Bradley's market value. I said we didn't have all the details -- that we couldn't in good conscience judge the man. I even implied that innocent until proven guilty meant that we should continue to support him until cold, hard evidence proved otherwise. Then we saw the evidence. I'm not making that mistake again. If there are rumors and whispers about a player being a [expletive] human being, then I'm not going to root for that player. And I don't want them on the Cubs. Sure, if I found myself on a jury for their trial I'd give them the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing. But this isn't a courtroom, and it isn't a jury trial. We don't owe that to them as members of the public. We're just here to be entertained and root for our favorite players. Chapman wont ever be one of mine. So you're saying that you didn't want to convict Milton Bradley until the evidence came out? And that was a mistake? That sort of seems responsible, no, i.e. the Duke lacrosse team?
  20. Women have gotten pretty [expletive] over when it comes to stuff like this. If he didn't do anything (which would be surprising) then oh well, the guy is a millionaire who plays baseball. He'll be fine. If he did it he still is a millionaire who plays baseball. That's a huge reason why in today's day and age people take one side so vehemently and I personally don't really have a problem with it. Am I reading correctly that you are saying even if a woman makes something up, it's not a big deal for the athlete because either way he's making millions?
  21. Hasn't Chapman in the past said he's not interested in being a starter?
  22. even with the rumored 4/60 extension? Ignoring the morality of the situation for the moment... I don't see the 4/60 extension as adding significant value to the deal. 4/60 is more or less market value. And while the certainty of having him under contract for that without duking it out for his services is worth something, I don't see it as adding enough to tip the scales. If it was something like 3/40 with a vesting 4th year based on appearances, maybe that would add enough value to get me over the hump. I get what you're saying, but I think it's worth a lot more than you do. Because when Chapman hits the market with no first round pick being attached, the chances of retaining him are far, far more difficult in my opinion.
  23. I feel better that is seems safe to assume it won't just be for two months. Torres for two months just isn't enough.
  24. I respect your morals. I really do. But in a way you should stop cheering for a team then. Because you are cheering for some bad guys, no doubt. And you don't know which ones those are, yes, but just knowing that there are bad guys in a group and you cheer for the group doesn't make it any better. I suppose you could make the argument that all 25 guys on a roster are close to squeaky clean. But then you are being naive. Buddy, this is still lazy, stupid logic. I guess I should also never have friends, because some of them might be bad. I don't know what secretly goes on in their lives. They could be rapists or pedophiles or murderers. WHO KNOWS! You have to go through life trusting people and even befriending them without knowing what kind of person they might truly be. That said, you probably SHOULDN'T go around trusting and befriending people you KNOW to be those kinds of people. Big difference between friends and athletes. You get a much better opportunity to decide if your friend is a good person or not.
  25. Did you root for Starlin the last few years? Honestly I never felt genuinely comfortable with him being a Cub after that. I'm glad they traded him. I respect your morals. I really do. But in a way you should stop cheering for a team then. Because you are cheering for some bad guys, no doubt. And you don't know which ones those are, yes, but just knowing that there are bad guys in a group and you cheer for the group doesn't make it any better.
