How about the fact that NOTHING has been written period about Hendry's interests in Sheets? You have not heard of the Cubs been connected to Sheets other then this board. So maybe that's a hint as to the interest level that Hendry has for Sheets? not really. hendry always keeps his cards close. the lack of reports about any interest, or lack thereof, doesn't mean anything at all.

that's not true at all. you cant just assume that you'll make profit on the 80m that you're investing elsewhere. There is a definite value to the money not spent. I'm no finance or economics guru, but I'm pretty sure spending $40 million to make $60 million is much better than spending $120 million to make $80 million. just looking at that sentence, and not knowing anything else, spending 120 to make 80 is a great move vs. spending 40 to make 60.

uribe has pretty good power against lefties, but that's about his only use on offense. i'd love to have nomar on the bench, he torched lefties last year. the phillies want him. not sure if he'd want to come back here, if the cubs wanted him back.

i cant agree. he's great at throwing out runners, and is really accurate for the most part. but he's far too lackadaisical (sp?) out there, and makes too many stupid plays. seems to be a bit on the passive side when it comes to chasing after balls as well. which, considering his injury history, might not be such a bad thing. but you dont ever see him laying out jim edmonds style. edited to add: it sure seems like he threw out more than 4 runners trying to score last year!

He's the 5th starter right now, unless you think Samardzija/Hart/Gaudin beats him out. if you had to construct a rotation today, then yes he'd be the 5th starter. i strongly believe that another starter will be acquired though, whether that be peavy or someone else, making marshall the swingman.

it's better that we can replace Harden in the rotation with Marshall instead of Peavy? almost as odd as whoever's talking about cult of flagellants and frenzy of loathing to the nth degree or some Veterans Committee what? no. it's nice to have a sean marshall to fill in when our starters get hurt. rather than the juan mateo/les walrond/ryan o'malley type. but if we had peavy we would have him instead of marshall. i mean, i can see your point if the trade had actually taken place and you were glad we were able to keep marshall, but what you're saying doesn't make any sense. i'm operating under the assumption that marshall is/will be the swingman/long reliever/spot starter.

Because AL teams play 90% of their games against other AL teams and NL teams play 90% of their games against other NL teams. Schedules aren't of even strengths, either. A better record between two teams only shows how much that team dominated their own league (mostly their own division). It doesn't necessarily mean they're a better team than a team from a different league with 2-3 less wins. Now we're going to penalize teams based on their difficulty of their division/league based on that particular year? It's not an awful idea, but I don't think it's the obvious logical choice. then what is? im certainly open to other ideas. that just seems to be the best bet to me, by a fairly wide margin.

this is why hendry is/was smart to say no to san diego's demands of including marshall in the peavy deal.

But that doesn't mean having home field advantage determined by this game has increased interest in the game. It's a stupid gimmick game that draws little interest and should have no baring on anything. i agree that it's a terrible way to determine HFA. but to suggest that a "small portion of the audience" had an increased interest seems silly. think about it. fans of every team in contention at the ASB (which is probably 75% of the teams) have a vested interest in seeing one league win. would i have watched all 13 innings (or whatever it was) last year if the end result meant nothing? no. but knowing that it was going to hopefully have an effect on the cubs, i stayed up watching. i think a lot of people did the same thing. certainly enough to say that there was increased interest. Others said the Cubs being in the race made it more interesting to people on this board, people who already spend an inordinate amount of time following baseball and the Cubs. That's a small minority of the overall television viewing audience. But the HFA story is years old. Why would it suddenly increase interest this year? oh i dont think it suddenly increased this past year. i wasnt arguing that. i just think that it does increase viewership in general.

phillips = less joe morgan. ANYTHING that = less joe morgan is a net gain to me.
