  1. If you saw it on cubs.com, it was most likely on the message board. Otherwise, you're either mistaken about the quote or where you saw it. A keyword search of cubs.com for the phrase "blew it" yields no results. i dont read the cubs.com message board, so that's not it. a quick google search leads me to this halfway down the page on this link... http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2009/1/19/728137/cubs-clearinghouse-rich-hi so it would've been in the 1/18 trib... which makes sense, as i buy the trib every sunday.
  2. i know for a fact i read the "he had his chance and he blew it" quote somewhere. proving it to some random person on nsbb isnt worth the effort of trying to find it, so believe me or don't -- it really doesnt matter. i remember it because it was so surprising to see him say though.
  3. that really doesn't sound like something hendry would say.... or any GM for that matter well, not sure what to tell you. he said it. i read it on cubs.com.
  4. not sure where i read it, it was right around the convention though.
  5. It's risk/reward. What's the benefit to trading away Hill? You get a low A reliever. Even if there's a 5% chance that Hill can contribute something this year, that's a better bet than the PTBNL turning into anything. i'd say it's much more likely that the PTBNL helps the cubs than rich hill ever would. as hendry said himself, rich had his shot and he blew it. he blew it pretty badly. Except for that entire season where he was really good yeah he was awesome in 07. but then he forgot how to throw strikes in 08. past success doesnt really mean much when you can't do the fundamental thing a pitcher is supposed to do -- throw strikes.
  6. there's a thread (err... diary, lol) on bcb that's reporting this is a done deal.

  8. rich hill hasnt done anything in a long, long time. what happens if we keep him thru ST, and he still can't throw strikes? we cut him, and get nothing. the question that you must answer if youre jim hendry is this... what's more likely, that rich will continue to be a terrible, terrible pitcher who cant find the zone, or that he'll suddenly remember how? i'm going with the former. and i think hendry is wise to at least get something rather than nothing.
  9. Or he's doing Hill a favor. or he's getting something as opposed to getting nothing.
  10. better than nothing i suppose, but its basically saying "as long as you dont miss more than 2 and a half months this year, we'll assume you'll be fine in 2010 and reward you with another 10 million bucks to stick around in 2011"
  11. i dont agree that he is a change of scenery guy. i just dont see how pitching for another organization is going to suddenly turn him into a guy that can throw strikes again.
  12. cherrypicked the endpoint? umm, if you want to include a 4th year, wolf is still better. and how is it roughly equivalent? because you say so? like you said that relievers ERA's are usually a lot lower than starters (they're not)? sorry, but you're going to have to give me something better than that before i'm convinced. Okay. So you want me to prove to you that parks effect ERA? no, i'm not an idiot of course they effect ERA. you cant just arbitrarily make up how much of an effect each park has.
  13. it's really not though, that's the thing. all you have to do is look at their statistics to see who the better pitcher is/has been. who will be better in '09? no one knows, obviously. but based on past performance, wolf is the better bet.

  15. if salary doesnt matter in this discussion, then neither does durability. Umm, that really doesn't make any sense. At all. If durability doesn't matter, neither do runs. good lord. youre that said we're talking about how good marquis is, not his salary. so somehow durability matters but salary doesnt to this discussion? The ability to take the mound without hurting your arm is a factor in how good of a pitcher you are. no, it's definitely not. you asked for proof of how wolf is a better pitcher than marquis. i gave it to you. why cant you just admit that wolf is better and end this silly argument? jesus, it's fairly obvious.
  16. if salary doesnt matter in this discussion, then neither does durability. Thats ridiculous. Durability has to matter in all discussions regarding a pitcher. Wolf taxes bullpens while not being that good, at least Marquis has a history of eating innings and saving a teams bullpen a little bit. agreed. and so does salary. i'm just trying to stay within the ever-changing parameters of this discussion. i thought we were just talking about how good a player is.

  19. Umm, prove it. Especially factoring in durability. three year splits... wolf -- 4.63 ERA, 300/143 K/BB marquis -- 5.08 ERA, 296/2021 K/BB proof enough? What parks did Wolf throw most of those innings in? do you have access to baseball-reference? look it up if you really want to know.
  20. Umm, prove it. Especially factoring in durability. three year splits... wolf -- 4.63 ERA, 300/143 K/BB marquis -- 5.08 ERA, 296/221 K/BB proof enough?
  21. ben sheets is the obvious answer. randy wolf, kris benson... there's three off the top of my head. want me to name more? Ben Sheets is hurt, Randy Wolf and Kris Benson are close, but not superior to, Marquis. lol, randy wolf is a far superior pitcher to jason marquis. ben sheets isn't hurt. the point is, there are plenty of people who are better than jason freaking marquis. he's a5th starter who makes 10m for crying out loud. i cant believe i'm actually in a discussion regarding the absurdity of the statement "where are we going to find someone better than jason marquis"
  22. what's the league average for a SP and a RP? Last year Starter: 4.46 Reliever: 4.09 2007 Starter: 4.64 Reliever: 4.20 thanks. i didnt think that it was "much lower" as kylejrm said. where'd you find that info, by the way?
