I saw all owners would’ve needed to unanimously vote on the ownership thing to allow it. Guessing someone would’ve voted no as to not set a precedent for future HC hirings. Also the NFL, where owners can commit $100 million to former Hooters Spokesmen to be their head coach but can’t afford to build their new stadiums....
Can’t wait to see what this guys idea of “splashy” is. http://cdn.barstoolsports.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/13/Screen-Shot-2017-01-13-at-4.07.44-PM.png
The part I don’t get about the rumor that it could be Cobb and Cain is what is Almora/Happ traded for then? A RP? A SP or 2 that’s like 2-4 years away (horsefeathers that, TINSTAAPP).
Cain make no sense to me (regardless of an OF being traded or if they just don’t trust someone or the unit as a whole). I’d rather have some combo of Gomez, Dyson, Jay, Jackson or Maybin for a fraction of the cost.
Yeah I couldn't tell if he meant on top of the controllable SP or he just meant a top prospect (or 2 top 50) could also get it done instead of the SP. Yeah I wasn’t sure either but think if it’s an either/or with those that’s a little light, imo. He’s worth more than a Lamet or just top 50 prospect or 2 (unless we’re talking top ~10, which I don’t think he’s worth and it’s more likely you could get a top 25-75 guy(s) for him).
A controllable starter who hasn’t had great succes but good stuff like Lamet and a top ~50 prospect or 2 for Baez seems about like where I’d value him. Personally.
From Rosenthal's article on the Athletic, sounds like Padres asked the Cubs about Javy (doesn't sound like we initiated it).... I'm guessing we asked for Hand as well as one of the starters (because one of those starters alone for Javy doesn't seem like an asking price worth "balking" at).
I think Monty in a deal for him too would make some sense, with him wanting a start and us not wanting to guarantee that. They get him for 4 years and he gets to work with Searage. I wouldn't obviously include him with Happ but Monty and some prospects could be another route. Either way Monty or Happ with prospects seems to make a lot of sense assuming they are willing to deal within the division and don't put a premium on it.
I'd do Albertos/Lange/Caratini in a second for Cole. Considering they blocked us from getting Nicasio, I'd guess they'd start with Happ. I'd probably be willing to trade him straight up or even with a little extra for Cole. Mainly because it'd allow us to do other things this off season. I'd absolutely do that trade or do something with Happ and 1-2 of those guys.
I don’t get giving that much money to Hosmer. You could replicate the production by just signing Lind or Jaso and Carter (or even Bautista since he has INF experience) and doing a platoon for like 10-20% of the cost.
Nigthengale says we’d be comfortable going 4 years about $110 for Jake. FWIW. Doubt it’s true since Nightengale is a buffoon but $27.5 aav is tough to swallow, though the 4 years is nice.
I wonder if we are trying to do something like 3/70 (~$23 aav) with Arrieta or Darvish with it being broken down 25/25/20 first 3 years and opt out after next year with a ~$5 mil buyout. Give both a solid base if they want it but potential to get more entering a more spend friendly market next offseason and get their $30 mil at worst for this season.
Could be he’s holding out for more money or a team where he could have a bigger role. Also could be we are waiting to see what route we go and exactly how much the last SP costs, if it’s cheaper than the limit to where we’d go then maybe they go give Avila a little more money with the savings since he’s a better player/left-handed to compliment Willy better.
Would the C and OF be veteran AAA depth then? I bet whatever backup C we sign, even some washed up vet like Ruiz or Ellis starts in the 25-Man roster. I think it’s highly likely Caritini starts in AAA to get regular work.
Nope, costs a pick and just kinda averageish on-base skills and it seems a lot of his game will go fast with age. I feel pretty confident Almora/Happ/Heywatd trio in CF for the 162 games they are rotated there will provide a higher WAR. Even if Almora is moved I’d rather go the Dyson/Jackson platoon route for CF and prefer either for the backup OF/Jay role as opposed to moving Almora there with a Cain signing.
i know this isn't the dexter deal you were referring to but man this just made me think of how dexter surprised re-upped with us in 16 and how horsefeathering cool that was 16 was so amazing but that’s still a top 5-7 moment for me easily
I’d agree this is to get Darvish (or maybe Cobb) to move but if Jake wants to do the Dexter 2 year deal with a opt out after this year, like 2/42 with 19ish this year and a $6 mil buyout, I’d be cool with that.
