It’s probably a little bit of a few things, emphasis to keep him fresh because of last year (just finished 17 in 17 days and start another one tonight so with the off day yesterday he double dips rest, probably a good thing), he’s been a bit cold lately and Vic has hit well so it could be a little riding a hot hand, he could be nursing something small too and they want to take it easy with him, also seems like Vic is catching only Yu and Hamels and maybe they want to simplify things for Willy so he only has to deal with working with 3 of the starters for the most part. Maybe they want to ramp up his playing time post ASB too so they’re slow playing him a bit for now.
I don't even know who Robel Gracia is, but agreed. He has a pretty crazy story. Former prospect thought of decently, flames out and had to go play in leagues around the world. Hooked up with a team in Italy and they came through the Mesa complex and the Cubs scouts saw him and signed him. He’s mashing in AAA, K rates are a little scary though and his defense is shakey (but probably can survive with him at 2B).
He probably has some made up “ambassador” job with the White Sox or something he’s using as a technicality. Or he just thinks he’s so important that any time he talks baseball that counts as still working in it.
He wasn’t just talking about the last 7 games. They went 8-6 the past two weeks. the cardinals and rockies are barely above .500 with run differentials that are barely positive. I dont see how a home stand against them is considered a tough stretch It was also in the middle/back end of 17 in 17 days. It was an objectively hard part of the schedule looking at it vs other stretches. The road trip sucked but we survived out of it, bad road trips happen. Especially at Coors and 4 at the best team in the league (who we still won 3 games against this year). Good thing nobody else in the division is any good and capitalized on a bad week by us. Like I mentioned I was happy with a 5-5 week going back to the Cardinals series last weekend through LA this weekend, and they did it. The road trip games were annoying but they came out of a tough stretch in decent shape.
Over the next 31 total we have 4 vs White Sox, 4 vs Mets, 4 vs Braves, 6 vs Reds, 3 vs Padres, 3 vs Giants, and 7 vs the Rats with multiple off days and the ASB. Time to pile up wins and get 18 to 21 of those.
It sucks we won’t have HFA in a NLCS with them (or incredibly unlikely at least at this point being 9 games worse or so), but I’m really not scared of them. The offense are pretty damn close, our bullpen is better if Kimbrel is remotely good, SP leans Dodgers but it’s close and they’re getting it done with guys who haven’t stayed healthy for years. Just win this stupid division and avoid the WC game.
I wanted 5-5 going back to the Cardinals last weekend and this weekend and we accomplished that tonight. So win tomorrow and make this 10 game stretch really quite good. But big picture they did their job.
