  1. and LOL at the Padres for acquiring a guy just for his name Who they could have claimed off waivers 3ish months ago for free, instead they give up Gerut. Who was one of their better offensive player, which isn't saying much but still...
  2. Bradley has smoked two balls tonight, hopefully it's a sign of things to come... Meanwhile Mike Fontenot might want to see if there are openings on any local St.Louis little league teams before the Cubs head out to SD.
  3. To get Hoff in the lineup, or what? i guess. according to Lou (via Len), Soriano to 2B, Hoff to LF. WOOT, a run! Thats a double whammy. Not only to you have a bad defensive second baseman, but you lose Sorianos arm in the outfield. If you're willing to sacrifice defense, just bring up Fox for 3rd. Either that or bring him up to platoon with Hoff in LF and send down Scales or DFA Miles or make up a injury and DL him.
  4. I bet if Hendry got it approved to the budget and he called Towers tomorrow and offered Thomas, Marshall, Archer, Starlin Castro, and maybe a PTBNL he could get a deal done. It would suck to lose Thomas, Archer and Castro as they all have gotten off to good starts this year and are all young or right on track for their age/level of minor league level, but I think it's a pretty fair deal. The Padres get a guy who can be a contributer to their rotation right now and 3 guys who can all be legit major league starters within the next few years. I wouldn't be opposed to even adding Ascanio, Stevens, Hart, Atkins or Wells instead of the PTBNL if the Padres want a ML ready pitcher for their bullpen or rotation right now.
  5. Sounds like the Padres are getting pretty desperate. Jon Heyman is reporting that the Padres asked the White Sox at the last minute if they had any ideas on how to persuade him. If Peavy is going to continue to be very picky about where he will accept a trade to and the Padres really need to move him, hopefully something can get done with ownership to allow us to take on salary and maybe Hendry can get a deal done without giving up Vitters.
  6. There is another team in the city he could play for. Why? So the Cubs could still blow games with this bullpen and no bench? The difference between Marshall and Peavy isn't worth the upgrades needed to improve the bullpen and bench (now regulars since they can't stay healthy). Even though the farm is improving, they don't have enough to improve every sector of the team. You don't trade for bench and bullpen guys in May. You don't give up important prospects for them either. Upgrading the bench/pen has nothing to do with a Peavy trade unless it's a matter of money. I crave Peavy more as a safeguard for injuries to Zambrano or Harden than as a replacement for Sean Marshall. If you can make the Peavy trade without giving up Marshall, you upgrade the pen and rotation all in one move. Not to mention that for upgrading you need prospects and the Peavy trade might diminish that. But I do agree that the money thing would be a bigger factor..and since we don't even know if there's room in the budget for Peavy this year, there almost certainly wouldn't be room for him and other upgrades. Here's the question for the Peavy supporters. If the Cubs were to get Peavy, are you satisfied with him as the entire 2009 offseason no matter what happens the rest of this year? The Cubs would lose Harden and Gregg after the season and likely have no free agent signings besides bench players. Personally, I'm not willing to pay a great deal for a guy who after this season would have a 4 year, 70 million dollar commitment. It's a fair deal that Peavy has, but the Cubs would be reticent to sign any free agent pitcher to that deal with the money they have tied up in Z, Dempster, and Lilly. When you add in that Peavy is not a free agent and that you'd also have to give up some good prospects to get him, it makes even less sense. And then you factor in that you're sitting down a good pitcher for the playoffs (one of Dempster/Lilly/Harden) and you're either taking a pretty good pitcher out of the rotation or trading him (Marshall). Essentially, the Cubs would be going for broke in 2009. 2010 and beyond would have worse versions of the ballclub every year with Peavy than without. That isn't really Peavy's fault, but he just doesn't fit with the players and contracts the Cubs have right now unless Ricketts really wants to take the team into Yankees territory on salaries. Yeah we'd be going for it this year (we have like a 2 year window right now) but between this upcoming offseason and next year we could potentially lose Gregg, Harden, Lee, Ramirez, Lilly, and Bradley. Harden and Gregg would be FA after this year Lee and Lilly are FA after 2010 and Bradley/Ramirez have either player/team options after 2010 so they might not be back. We would have plenty of room to add a guy or to if needed the next two offseasons.
  7. should've sold high. Trade him to the Orioles while we can still get something...
  8. I agree with this statement except for Scales. Scales ceiling is probably a utility guy, which is fine, but we are going to need to be starting him 3-5 times a week until Aram gets back and I don't think he's capable of being a close to everyday guy.
  9. If we learned anything tonight it's between Miles, Fontenot and Scales we have no major league 2B/3B on the team and Hoff needs to be starting somewhere everyday.
  10. Way to cut down your swing with 2 strikes Reed. Effing Dumbass On the bright side we are only 2 games out in the L column and we have been playing like little leaguers and the Brewers have won like their last 100 games.
  11. He's gotten two pitches to do something with in this ab
  12. I would usually expect a fake rally here, but this team doesn't even have the talent to do that right now.
  13. My patience is wearing very thin on Bradley. He needs to start putting up real soon or Hoff/Johnson/Fox(if he gets called up) should start getting starts over him. I really want to see Bradley succeed as I like his passion/personality towards the game, but he needs to start playing like the guy he was last year in Texas (or at least close to it).
  14. We probably should have went with Adam Dunn. I honestly would have loved it then be angry every time he K's, which is approx. 200 times a year still adam dunn is so lovable, dunno how you can hate the guy Bradley is striking out a lot too and most guys who's OBP is in the .400 area are going to K a lot as they are going into deep counts, unless you name is Albert Pujols. I would be more than happy with Dunn in the lineup knowing we'd get a .230-.250/.380-.400/.515-.540 with 40 HR and 100 RBI.
  15. Seriously that may have been the dumbest move Lous made all year, and thats saying alot. The 4th [expletive] inning and our entire infield was pulled in. Lous panicking plain and simple. If we are pulling the IF in, in the 4th effing inning. I fully expect every runner that reaches 1st/2nd the rest of the way out either attempt to steal or be sacrificed over.
  16. ESPN can lower is alert level now, Arod is back, Big Papi hit a HR, the Red Sox and Yankees are both starting to win. All is good.
  17. So what's up with Freel? Is he still hurt? Fonteont has been struggling bad both offensively and defensively lately. Is it just a matchup thing with the L/R.
  18. Hopefully he can get a promotion to high A by mid/end of June and maybe even get into AA by the end of the year. Should be interesting to see how aggressive the Cubs are with promoting him. I would think, barring any injuries or severe slumps, Vitters should be in AA full time by June/July of next year.
  19. Theriot's going to create his own 50/50 club 50HR and 50CS.
