    Earlier he wasn't throwing his curve for strikes and hitters were sitting on his fastabll. Major league hitters can hit a 92 mph fastball when they are looking for it. His effectiveness lately comes from the fact that hitters have not been able to sit on his fastball because he is throwing his curve for strikes and that big slow curveball that is dropping in for strikes makes that 92 mph fastball look like it's 102 mph. As long as he can throw his curves for strikes he should be able to keep hitters off balance. So it wasn't the fact he was a one pitch pitcher it was that he was a pitcher that at the time only had one effective pitch working for him...and he was having trouble controlling that one.

    I was pretty critical of him too. He has been very impressive of late but I'll hold off on his ticket to Cooperstown for now and just hope he keeps it up. But I fully expect his arm to fly off his shoulder and land about halfway between the mound and homeplate in his next start the way the Cubs luck has been this year.

    Cubs fans deserve a World Series WAY before Theriot deserves a starting gig at 2b in 2007. If the Cubs starting outfield is Drew, Soriano and Andruw Jones and the rest of the infield is Ramirez, Tejada and Lee with Barrett behind the plate, fans may be willing to concede Theriot at 2b. With guys like Mark Loretta, Julio Lugo, Jeff Kent, Soriano, Ray Durham and I'm sure another small handful of guys that might be on the market, 2b is a prime position to put an established veteran who can produce before you go with a rookie with limited major league experience. That's not to say you do that with any and every rookie. I wanted a Murton/Jones platoon last year with a stud in RF if the plan was to give Cedeno the everyday job at SS. We didn't get that and look how things turned out. Theriot is an inexpensive guy who can plug in at several different positions. I spell that utility. I'm proud of Theriot's accomplishments. I hope he becomes an all star someday. Heck, I hope he's an all star next year. But, he does not have the background that tells me that it's likely he'll be a highly productive 2b and DESERVES the opportunity. Sheesh...give me that lineup and we could live with Neifi at 2B! :twisted:

    Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Pie playing CF for the Cubs next year IF we have a manager with a clue. If we wait for everyone on this board to agree when he is ready to play in MLB he will still be in Iowa when he's 30 years old. Sometimes you just have to bring them up when you have the need. And he'd be a lot cheaper than the human groundball machine.

    While his numbers were not bad he did have quite a drop off from Hi A to AA. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/stats/player.php?id=444844 I haven't claimed the kid is a bum. He is a prospect but he's not in the elite class. Baseball America, in a Sept. 6, 2006 article, has him listed in the top 25. He is not listed in the top 10 as they number them. They list the next 15 without numbers. He is listed last in order of the 25 but he could fall anywhere between 11 and 25. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/hotsheet/262386.html Having said that...I really don't have anything against Fox. The original statement was more about the Cubs lack of development of position players. If anyone wants to believe he's a top prospect then more power to them. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

    I was speaking of position player prospects...not pitching prospects. And you shouldn't assume I'm basing my whole argument on the article I quoted from.

    I'm not the one that called Fox a top prospect...which he is not. The only thing close to a top prospect in the Cubs system is Pie.

    When was that made? He was batting .325/.396/.578 with 5 HRs already by the end of April. It was from an article by Dayn Perry at foxsports.com at the beginning of the season. He had him rated as the 10th best catching prospect in MLB. That and his stats others have posted makes me believe he isn't a top prospect. Just my opinion though.

    Doesn't sound all that special. From earlier this season: 10. Jake Fox, Cubs, Age: 23 Acquired: 3rd round, 2003, U. of Michigan Fox's right-handed power stroke will play well in Wrigley one day, but it's not certain what position he'll be manning. He's not a good defensive catcher, and if he's moved elsewhere on the diamond (say, first base or one of the outfield corners), his offense suddenly isn't all that special. Whether Fox can stick at catcher will determine his ceiling. He's off to a slow start this season at High-A Daytona.

    That's a nice idea, problem is position player wise, the farms system is garbage. So are we just gonna put up with the crap on the field now till we rebuilt the farm system? i think "garbage" is a much too harsh description. although pitching is obviously the strength of the system, guys like pie, ep, theriot, soto, restovich, fox, moore, fontenot, colvin, robinson are all good prospects who will have a good chance to contribute in the not too distant future. I am not so sure on those players listed. I think Pie is the only one with a chance to be an everyday major league player.

    Which is right in line with the way the Trib would love to do it...except the building within never happens. At least with position players.

    I think the handwriting is so much on the wall now that I'd be totally shocked if Dusty returns. I wouldn't have said that two months ago.If it was any team not named the Cubs I would agree. Somehow they always manage do do the wrong thing. It isn't just the Cubs' decision, however. Even if they stupidly want him back, that doesn't mean Dusty wants to return. I, along with several other posters, think that he may choose to look elsewhere regardless of what Hendry decides.I'm hoping in one way or another he isn't back but I've learned not to get my hopes too high when it comes to this team. I'll believe it when it happens. And even if it does happen I have all the faith in the world that Hendry will choose another manager that is as bad or worse (if possible) than Dusty. :cry:

    You might get an ex-Houston manager managing the Cubs but it won't be Dierker. (Jimy Williams) But my money still says Baker will be extended because Hendry still believes, wrongly I might add, that he is the right man for the job.
