  1. By the way, I refuse to read this book simply because of the damage my forehead would take from slamming it on the desk after I read the inevitable grit comment.
  2. Wow, someone really should have sat the author down and simply explained that sabermetrics predict the most likely outcome, not the definite outcome. Of course there is no way to factor in extremely obscure situations like a ball hitting a bird. If someone had done this the author probably could have saved a few months of his life.
  3. If Soto is hitting eighth again this year, there will be a lot of kicked puppies.
  4. Absolutely thrilled. I was really worried about the state of the farm if they lost Szczur after trading Archer/Lee. This goes a long way in easing those concerns.
  5. If Pujols is going to get 30+ million a year give me Fielder for 18ish and that extra 10+ million to add another all star caliber player.
  6. Unless Cashner's arm falls off in spring training Russell had better not be given that spot in the rotation.
  7. What stat do you prefer? I personally like HR/FB ratio. Colvin's is completely unsustainable unless he's on par with the Adam Dunns and Albert Pujols' of the world. Combine that with one of the worst zone recognitions in the league and I think there's a very high likely hood of regression.
  8. I keep hearing the term potential when people are referring to Garza. The guy has pitched in the majors for 5 years now. It's so much more likely that he is what he is. The chances of him breaking out at this point are slim and certainly not worth dropping 4 of the farm's top 16 prospects including their number 1. The Cubs still aren't the division favorite and now the farm is going to fall from top 10 to hopefully middle of the pack if not worse. If Hendry was going to pony up for a prospect he should have done so for an impact bat, not an underachieving slightly above average starter.
  9. When you go to 5+ all-star games then you're probably getting HOF mentions as well. That seems like some pretty ridiculously lofty standards.
  10. Come on, don't give up that momentum yet. They need to hold them to a field goal.
  11. Hester is lights out right now.
  12. Defense is stepping up.
  13. Wow, huge break. Take advantage here.
  14. Well that is promising.
  15. That was a HUGE break.
  16. A complete non-factor.
  17. Would be nice if the Bears defense would show up against the mighty Mark Sanchez......
  18. Good drive to get back into it.
  19. What a throw off his back foot.
  20. Pretty much this. And I think you meant AL East. b/c whip is far from the end all stat by which to measure pitchers True. In and of itself WHIP isn't a good judge of a pitcher. However, what CUBZ99's point was is that Garza put up pretty respectable numbers last season, pitching 1/3 of his games against the very difficult Yankee and Red Sox lineups. If you take Randy Wells and his similar numbers against the NL Central and transferred them to the AL East, they would not be so respectable. And I agree. Garza was a similar pitcher to Wells, but he faced much stiffer competition, so his numbers are therefore more impressive. Even the stats that adjust for league/park like ERA+ don't support Garza being particularly special. In fact the only team he had an ERA in excess of 4 of was the Yankees. He did amazingly well against the Orioles, Red Sox and Blue Jays. The AL east is certainly better than the NL central, but the effect doesn't seem to be nearly as large as people are making it out to be.
  21. I wouldn't call Hak-Ju Lee an impact bat, but his all around game is enough to have a big impact. He could be a guy who hits 290-300 with a 350-360 OBP, steals an enormous amount bases and plays extremely strong defense at SS. Even after TJS he has a cannon for an arm and his range is huge. If the Cubs absolutely must keep Castro at SS then they could always move Lee to CF.
