  1. Purdue as number one? Laughable. They will be good but I dont think they are preseason number one good. Butler at number 3? Also laughable. OSU is a top ten team next year, and I think with what they are adding could be ahead of both MSU and Purdue in the BT.
  2. Positives: Crappy team = cheap tickets. Negatives: I paid for MLBtv to watch them this season.
  3. My biggest concern is the bullpen. Losing Guzman really hurt there. The rotation is blah. I don't think Soto will be hitting 8th for long. This team is far less hateable than last years, version. I'm not sure if that is because my expectations are are lower or because Miles is finally gone.
  4. He had more than a decade as an assistant/recruiting coordinator at Notre Dame. That's some history in the midwest. It's not a name that fans will jump on board with right away, but people can't bitch about the style of play anymore. Big Ten fans should like it at least for the variance in style of play. It will be kind of like Mike Anderson coming to the Big 12. A lot has changed in the 11 years since McCaffery was at ND. No school in the Big Ten still has the same coach except for MSU. Countless high schools have had changes in their programs. The AAU circuit has become much more present in recruiting. I think his time at Notre Dame may prove beneficial in some respects, but 11 years is a long time and he is going to have to work very hard to reestablish what relationships he may have had. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Tracy Webster on staff at Iowa next year.
  5. It's a 6x6 league. For hitters avg, runs, sb, hr, rbi, and walks. For pitchers ERA, WHIP, K, W, Saves, and Holds. It's also a head to head league with 12 teams. Money is involved so I don't think participation will be a problem.
  6. I'm not really sure what to think of the Iowa hire. On one hand I think McCaffery is a good coach, but bringing in a low to mid major coach who has no history in the Midwest would be troubling to me if I were an Iowa fan. He is going to have to hire some assistants with some good connections.
  7. My buddies and I are starting a league for the first time this year. We have had a solid fantasy football league going for the past 5 years and figured it was time to branch out into baseball. I am very unfamiliar with the differences between fantasy football and fantasy baseball so I could use all the advice I can get. Here are my questions: 1) What are the statistics I should value the most, and what statistics are the easiest to find in later rounds? 2) When drafting what kind of balance should I look for between pitchers and position players. 3) Are there some positions that HAVE to be filled early, or is this like a reduced QB fantasy football league where you can wait to draft a QB in later rounds. 4) While drafting should I consider the overall depth of the position, or always draft BPA? 5) Any other advice you may have for a fantasy baseball virgin
  8. If head to head triumphs all, maybe you should be concerned with another 3rd place finish in the SEC East before you start worrying about national titles considering how Vandy and UK abused you this year. I can't wait for that scumbag to land you on probation.
  9. Lol. Did Lewis Jackson average his 20 a game? Was I totally wrong saying we would have a first team all big ten performer? Is Purdue the best mens basketball program of all time? Look, I'm sorry Illinois choked too much to make the tournament but you shouldn't make fun of fans of teams you are jealous off. What's there to be jealous of at Purdue. Painter is living off of the 07 class, and I've yet to see a kid who can play at that sort of level come in behind them. The lone exception being Teon Johnson. Great job reaching on Jay Simpson. Enjoy your three year run of relevance in the Big Ten.
  10. Because we were so good at cheating we kept records of it. We are defined by the slush fund scandal of the 60's, and Mike White's "questionable" tactics in recruiting Southern California junior college players in the 80's. We have cheated and cheated big and gotten caught twice. That's why the NCAA gave it to us in the Pearl fiasco, even though there was little evidence to prove anything was wrong with Thomas' recruitment. Instead they slapped us with lack of institutional control and threw the book at us. This is who we are to the NCAA, and it is who we will forever be. KY basketball and OSU football make a ton of money, so the NCAA is always easy on its sacred cows, because they are in the business of profiting off of students. /end rant
  11. Bite your tongue. Why it is the absolute truth. The guy is a grade A clown.
  12. Iowa needs a recruiter. If you can make Baylor relevant after the Dave Bliss situation, than Iowa has to take a look at him. He's young, makes less than half a million according to wikipedia, and has recruited well to Baylor.
  13. Scott Drew is a name that came to mind for me. If they go after Pearl it's going to get ugly.
  14. I don't see what Johnson and Moore have to lose by declaring. They should go and see where they stand, especially with college basketball as bad as it has been this year. I think D Mac will be back, but I could see him testing the waters for this reason.
  15. Here is why Illinois is hard to recruit to: 1) The CPL has never been friendly to us, especially after the Jimmy Collins fiasco. You've got to pay if you want the players. 2) Illinois cannot afford to get it's hands dirty. There is a long history of violations, and the NCAA sees us in that light. 3) The school is in the middle of a corn field. 4) Because Illinois is such a great basketball state, we often find ourselves going up against the true heavy weights in college basketball for the top recruits. Coach K is from the Chicago area, Self is always present, Kentucky and Louisville both recruit the Chicago area well, and you still have the rest of the Big Ten trying to kick in the door to Chicago talent. Anytime a program like Illinois can win one of these battles it is huge, but it is about a once in a decade occurrence. 5) There is not much allegiance to the University of Illinois in the Chicago area. This changes a lot when you go down state, and is why you often see the top down state talent end up at Illinois. The one big exception I can think of is Livingston who committed to Duke. I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons, but this is what I've got off of the top of my head.
  16. They return their other four starters, plus they add the number one recruit and recruiting class in the country. Something tells me OSU will still ball pretty hard. D Mac will be back.
  17. Predicted Big Ten Finish: 1. Michigan State 2. Ohio State 3. Illinois 4. Purdue 5. Minnesota 6. Wisconsin 7. Northwestern 8. Indiana 9. Michigan 10. Iowa 11. Penn State
  18. It looks like Cirque Du Soleil is at Assembly Hall from 3/17-3/21. I predict a first round Illini loss.Nah, they've played much better on the road for the last month. Who cares? The real question is do we hang a banner if we win this thing? I've already emailed Saint Ron Guenther in opposition to any recognition of this teams post season achievements.
  19. As an outsider, I am starting to wonder myself. The big argument against him is that his best teams in his tenure weren't his guys. I've been hearing about all the awesome recruiting classes Illinois was getting and I have yet to see the results. I know next year you are supposed to be getting a good class coming in so I'd probably reserve judgement for at least a season or two. He whiffed for 3 of 4 years. 05, 06, and 08 yielded nothing. Lack of depth and turnover within the program has plagued the last few years. Freshmen were not going to lead us to the promised land this year.
  20. This is moronic. He took a team with Chester Frazier as a point guard to a five seed.
  21. Doesn't matter because Weber will keep them all parked on the bench. No way, I thought that before, but now I think he knows if he misses this year he has to have a big year next year. I am betting that Paul and Richmond play together a lot next year and we improve a lot. Yeah, I'm just very negative right now. Just a byproduct of my low expectations for the evening.
  22. Doesn't matter because Weber will keep them all parked on the bench.
  23. Cal has beaten 1 tournament team all year(Washington), and they probably wouldn't be in if they didn't win the tourney. AND they went 1-2 against them. They also lost to Oregon St, Arizona, USC, and UCLA. UTEP hasn't beaten a single at-large tourney team all year. They've lost to Houston twice, New Mexico St, and Texas Tech. Mississippi St has beaten Old Dominion and Vanderbilt. They have lost to Rider, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Alabama, and Auburn. Good thing Mike Slive is no longer running the committee. Otherwise Miss St. would be a 9 seed with that fantastic resume.
  24. Completely wrong. Check your priorities
