  1. Lots of upside, but didn't he bomb last year? Yeah, but a trade may do him a world of good. :D
  2. The Panthers are GOING(S) to win.
  3. And the batter hits into a double play, but a run scores because the fielder doesn't throw to home. Dusty stops using him in key situations because, dude, I use youngsters in situations where they can succeed, and obviously Guzman can't succeed in bases loaded situations because he allows runners to score.
  4. I made a crack, but as happens all too often around here what was intended as a harmless joke devolved into a political debate. It wasn't me that moved it to Rants, but I agree with whoever did.
  5. Don't forget, Neifi is a Cubs' hero for hitting the HR to beat the Giants on the last day of the 1998 season that created the Wild Card tie with the Cubs. :D
  6. That makes sense. He did have an earlier one-year term as Daytona manager (winning the league championship) before returning to duties as hitting coach. When he became organization-wide hitting coordinator, I believe that was when Leon Lee left the organization. It may be that he agreed to manage the team for one year with the understanding that somebody else would be brought in for this year, with him returning to his preferred position.
  7. I don't think that Lofton, at this stage of his career, is equal to Pierre. I think Jones is going to be okay in RF and surpise a lot of people. Banks talking to Kessinger. I must be in a time machine. :D
  8. No, I'll be watching the game on TV (my TV and computer are in different rooms). So I won't be online, other than possibly during halftime.
  9. Alexander said earlier in the week that he is going to play, and Peppers practiced today. I haven't heard anything about Morgan.
  10. That is the radio call. The television call is elsewhere on the same CD (in the introductory material at the very beginning, right before Jack's narration begins). "Deep to right. Back, back, back, HEY-HEY! It's all over! Willie Smith just homered, and the Cubs win the game!"
  11. I have that call on the Jack Brickhouse Presents Great Moments In Cubs Baseball record (which came out in 1971). A little over a year ago I got a copy on eBay, had it transferred to CD (since I don't have a turntable anymore), and then donated the vinyl record as a prize for last year's predictions contest.
  12. I teach Accounting at the college level at a private university in North Carolina.
  13. You could go to Baseball Reference (the web site I put a link to in my earlier post), click on the Cubs link, then click on each season one by one and compare that season's schedule with the book. Of course, if you have free time to do that one year at a time you really need to get a life. :D
  14. According to Retrosheet the Cubs beat Florida 16-2 on July 20 and beat Atlanta 15-6 the next day. You can look up results and box scores for any date. The Cubs' 2004 media guide shows day-by-day results for the 2003 season, but I'm not sure if any web site has that information. I'm not sure if cubs.com has that information for 2003 or not. EDIT: Baseball Reference has what you're looking for.
  15. I try. :D
  16. I'm completely puzzled about what this is referring to. And I'm a teacher, so hopefully he doesn't have anything against teachers in general. :D
  17. What she's referring to (I think) is that on the MLB forums, if you reply to a specific post (you can do that without actually quoting the post) your reply includes a link that takes you directly to that specific post. So, for example, if your post is #50 in a thread and you're replying to post #5, your post automatically includes a link directly to post #5. I don't know if the software this board uses has that capability or not.
  18. I haven't seen anything about this elsewhere on this board. Former Cub Willie Smith died of an apparent heart attack earlier this week. Smith played for several teams in the 60s and early 70s, including the Cubs from 68 through 70. He started his major league career as a pitcher and then switched to the outfield. He is the only black player with over 20 pitching and position appearances in the major leagues. He was the Cubs' top pinch hitter in 1969 and his biggest Cub moment was probably his game-winning pinch-hit home run in extra innings on Opening Day in 1969.
  19. To me that seems like a demotion. Certainly going from manager to hitting coach at the major league level would be a demotion; I would think it would be in the minors as well. I would also think that being hitting coach for a specific team would be considered a demotion from being the organization-wide hitting coordinator (which Zisk was a few years ago); however, I don't know if it really is viewed that way (just because it seems to me like it would be doesn't necessarily mean that it actually is).
  20. Listach was acting manager at Iowa for the last couple of months of 2002. He was serving as hitting coach under Bruce Kimm and took over as manager when Kimm replaced Don Baylor as Cubs manager.
  21. I laughed at that picture when I saw it the first time in VineLine. A classic.
  22. I think it's because Iowa was the AAA team for the Oakland A's before they affiliated with the White Sox, and they just kept the name when switching affiliations.
  23. Patterson wouldn't be repeating Daytona, since he's never played there in the first place. He went straight from Peoria to West Tenn last year, skipping over Daytona.
  24. Ditto with me in Carolina.
